Abstract:The microstructural evolution of the Fe-0.155%C alloy with different high magnetic field gradients has been investigated. The results reveal that proeutectoid ferrite aligns to the direction of the magnetic field, and that the volume fraction of proeutectoid ferrite increases with a uniform high magnetic field. The alignment of proeutectoid ferrite has been evaluated by the method of quantitative microscopy analysis, and the results demonstrate that the alignment degree of proeutectoid ferrite is further promoted with high magnetic field gradients, whereas the volume fraction increases slightly. The hysteresis loops reveal that saturation magnetic induction increases by 10.6% and 14.1% with a uniform high magnetic field and a maximum high magnetic field gradient, respectively. Furthermore, alignment of proeutectoid ferrite will increase the magnetostriction coefficient by about 29.7% under a uniform high magnetic field in comparison with the absence of a magnetic field, while high magnetic field gradients will further increase the magnetostriction coefficient of the specimens. In addition, the mechanical properties indicate that, essentially, the yield strength and tensile strength of the specimens show almost no variation, but the breaking elongation increases by about 14.9% and 32.1% with a uniform high magnetic field and the maximum high magnetic field gradient, respectively. The mechanism of high magnetic field gradients on the microstructural evolution are discussed from the viewpoint of magnetic dipolar interaction, the demagnetizing energy, and magnetic force.
