Abstract: In the preceding chapter, we have introduced a logical framework for static preference. Continuing on this platform, our main concern in this chapter is the dynamics of preference change. Our preferences are modified constantly through commands of moral authorities, suggestions from friends who give good advice, or just changes in our own evaluation of worlds and actions. Abstract: In the preceding two chapters, a rich notion of priority-based preference has been studied in stable situations. Various ways of deriving preferences from a priority sequence have been proposed, both under complete and under incomplete information. In this chapter we take up one of the main themes of this book, and address the dynamics of changes in preferences in this richer setting. What we find is that our earlier methods for plain betterness orderings generalize in an obvious manner, with a few adaptations. Therefore, this chapter will be short, since the connection, once seen, is straightforward.

Abstract: Preferences arise from comparisons between alternatives, say, outcomes, actions, or situations. Such a comparison is typically associated with some ordering, indicating that one alternative is “better” than another. For instance, when playing chess or other games, choosing a move π1 instead of π2 is determined largely by a consideration concerning the outcomes that π1 or π2 leads to. In general, individual preferences can be used to predict behavior by rational agents, as studied in game theory and decision theory. Preference logics in the literature study the abstract properties of different comparative structures [101].
Preference, Priorities and Belief

Abstract:In this paper we consider preference over objects. We show how this preference can be derived from priorities, properties of these objects, a concept which is initially from optimality theory. We do this both in the case when an agent has complete information and in the case when an agent only has beliefs about the properties. After the single agent case we also consider the multi-agent case. In each of these cases, we construct preference logics, some of them extending the standard logic of belief. This leads to interesting connections between preference and beliefs. We strengthen the usual completeness results for logics of this kind to representation theorems. The representation theorems describe the reasoning that is valid for preference relations that have been obtained from priorities. In the multi-agent case, these representation theorems are strengthened to the special cases of cooperative and competitive agents. We study preference change with regard to changes of the priority sequence, and change of beliefs. We apply the dynamic epistemic logic approach, and in consequence reduction axioms are presented. We conclude with some possible directions for future work.

Abstract:In recent work Xiong and Seligman [1,2] introduced a logic for reasoning about preferences and decision making in a setting where the agent focuses on a subset of all alternatives (such as possible workshops to submit her paper to), and where new alternatives can come into focus as the result of questions of the type “have you considered IJCAI workshops?” being asked. An axiomatization of the logic is presented and proved complete. The purpose of the current paper is twofold. First, we present an alternative semantics for the key language constructs proposed in [2], basically differing in representing the alternatives under consideration semantically rather than syntactically. We argue that in some cases this semantics captures the intended meaning better. Second, we present a “direct” sound and complete axiomatization of a preference logic based on this semantics, without using hybrid logic techniques.

Abstract:Preference is a key area where analytic philosophy meets philosophical logic. I start with two related issues: reasons for preference, and changes in preference, first mentioned in von Wright's book The Logic of Preference but not thoroughly explored there. I show how these two issues can be handled together in one dynamic logical framework, working with structured two-level models, and I investigate the resulting dynamics of reason-based preference in some detail. Next, I study the foundational issue of entanglement between preference and beliefs, and relate the resulting richer logics to belief revision theory and decision theory.

Abstract:Preference is a core notion in philosophy,game theory,decision theory and utility theory,and it has played a central role in philosophy of action and rational choice. This paper studies preferences from a logical perspective. I first introduce an existing Doxastic preference logic over individual objects,and then extend it to propositions. A new Doxastic preference logic over propositions is proposed,and its completeness and a representation theorem have been proved. The paper also explores a notion of propositional preference as a lift from preference relations over possible worlds and presents a complete logic for it. Finally,the two Doxastic preference logics over objects and over propositions,respectively,are compared,and I show that they are essentially the same in terms of reasoning with preferences.

Abstract:Statements not only update our current knowledge, but also have other dynamic effects. In particular, suggestions or commands ‘upgrade' our preferences by changing the current order among worlds. We present a complete logic of knowledge update plus preference upgrade that works with dynamic-epistemic-style reduction axioms. This system can model changing obligations, conflicting commands, or ‘regret'. We then show how to derive reduction axioms from arbitrary definable relation changes. This style of analysis also has a product update version with preferences between actions, as well as worlds. Some illustrations are presented involving defaults and obligations. We conclude that our dynamic framework is viable, while admitting a further extension to more numerical ‘utility update'.

Abstract:In the last few years, preference logic and in particular, the dynamic logic of preference change, has suddenly become a live topic in my Amsterdam and Stanford environments. At the request of the editors, this article explains how this interest came about, and what is happening. I mainly present a story around some recent dissertations and papers, which are found in the references. There is no pretence at complete coverage of preference logic (for that, see Hansson 2001) or even of preference change (Hansson 1995).

Abstract:Preference is a core notion in philosophy, game theory, and benefit theory. And it has a central role in the philosophy of action and rational choice. This paper studies preference from a logical and abstractive perspective. First, the author introduces the belief preference logic for single agent, and then extends this work into a multi-agent case. The author proposes a new multi-agent conviction preference logic system, and proves its completeness and puts forward a theorem of representation in a new situation. In particular, the author considers two typical multi-agent schemes: cooperative agents and competitive agents, and shows that priority based pref - erence notion can be used to characterize the interaction between agents in those situations.

Abstract:for defining Nash Equilibrium in strategic games, and also the Backward Induction solution for finite extensive games. Finally, from a technical perspective, our treatment adds a new twist. Each application considered in this paper suggests the need for some additional access to worlds before the preference modality can unfold its true power. For this purpose, we use various extras from the modern literature: the global modality, further hybrid logic operators, action modalities from propositional dynamic logic, and modalities of individual and distributed knowledge from epistemic logic. The total package is still modal, but we can now capture a large variety of new notions. Finally, our emphasis in this paper is wholly on expressive power. Abstract:The normative realm involves deontic notions such as obligation or permission, as well as information about relevant actions and states of the world. This mixture is not static, given once and for all. Both information and normative evaluation available to agents are subject to changes with various triggers, such as learning new facts or accepting new laws. This paper explores models for this setting in terms of dynamic logics for information-driven agency. Our paradigm will be dynamic-epistemic logics for knowledge and belief, and their current extensions to the statics and dynamics of agents' preferences. Here the link with deontics is that moral reasoning may be viewed as involving preferences of the acting agent as well as moral authorities such as lawgivers, one's conscience, or yet others. In doing so we discuss a large number of themes: primitive 'betterness' order versus reason-based preferences (employing a model of 'priority graphs'), the entanglement of preference and informational attitudes such as belief, interactive social agents, and scenarios with long-term patterns emerging over time. Specific deontic issues considered include paradoxes of deontic reasoning, acts of changing obligations, and changing norm systems. We conclude with some further directions, as well as a series of pointers to related work, including different paradigms for looking at these same phenomena.

Abstract:'Logic' is a growing and changing concept.Logic is concerned with human thinking;it refines the prescriptions of how human beings should think from the descriptions of how human beings actually think.Because of the development of human thinking and the change of human's wants in cognition and practice,logical studies of different historical periods usually show important difference in their subject matters,emphases,methodologies and results,and then the varieties of logical theories have been multiplied.In the push of computer science and artificial intelligence research,contemporary logic becomes to focus on the investigation of how human actually think on different concrete topics,and brings itself some new characteristics,e.g.the direct and obvious description of actual process of thinking,the complexity of logical techniques,the uncertainty of the conclusions of inference,and the pursue of the applicability of the resulting theories,and so on.We can't take the dominant approach of a historical period to be absolutely or uniquely correct one,and use it to judge all the research of our historical predecessors and contemporary colleagues.We should never forget the slogan that 'independence in spirit,freedom in thinking' which is the soul of academic research,and never forget to put it into practice in our logical studies.We should maintain academic standards and protect academic freedom at the same time.

Abstract:We identify a pervasive contrast between implicit and explicit stances in logical analysis and system design. Implicit systems change received meanings of logical constants and sometimes also the notion of consequence, while explicit systems conservatively extend classical systems with new vocabulary. We illustrate the contrast for intuitionistic and epistemic logic, then take it further to information dynamics, default reasoning, and other areas, to show its wide scope. This gives a working understanding of the contrast, though we stop short of a formal definition, and acknowledge limitations and borderline cases. Throughout we show how awareness of the two stances suggests new logical systems and new issues about translations between implicit and explicit systems, linking up with foundational concerns about identity of logical systems. But we also show how a practical facility with these complementary working styles has philosophical consequences, as it throws doubt on strong philosophical claims made by just taking one design stance and ignoring alternative ones. We will illustrate the latter benefit for the case of logical pluralism and hyper-intensional semantics.

Abstract:Abstract A ‘logical system’ is a complex architecture for analysing one or more styles of reasoning. This paper approaches this notion by example, focussing on current ‘dynamic’ conceptions of logic, as being concerned both with declarative propositions and with cognitive procedures of update, revision, etc. The semantic model proposed for this purpose is a general dynamic logic (inspired by dynamic logic in computer science). We show how this architecture leads to (1) new perspectives on logical constants (essentially, these become invariants in an infinite hierarchy of process simulations), (2) notions of inference (which may be classified via sets of structural rules and corresponding representation theorems) as well as (3) a systematic study of switching mechanisms between static and dynamic levels, effecting a flow of information between short-term and long-term reasoning.

Abstract:In this paper we present a quantitative semantic of preference in terms of evalu-ation functions. A new language with propositional constants is proposed and it turns out to be both concise and expressive. Moreover, such a quantitative perspective suggests a different way to deal with preference changes when processing new information. We follow the stan-dard mechanism of product update, and propose a new Addition rule and a new Parameterized rule to characterize the subtleties of value changes. A complete dynamic epistemic evaluation logic is presented for the evaluation update. We then shift to the deontic setting and show that the current mechanism applies there as well, in particular, it provides a way to solve the issue of contradictory obligations. Finally, we end up with a new technical result concerning bisimulation for evaluation models.

Abstract:This paper presents a new modal logic for ceteris paribus preferences understood in the sense of “all other things being equal”. This reading goes back to the seminal work of Von Wright in the early 1960’s and has returned in computer science in the 1990’s and in more abstract “dependency logics” today. We show how it differs from ceteris paribus as “all other things being normal”, which is used in contexts with preference defeaters. We provide a semantic analysis and several completeness theorems. We show how our system links up with Von Wright’s work, and how it applies to game-theoretic solution concepts, to agenda setting in investigation, and to preference change. We finally consider its relation with infinitary modal logics.
