Abstract:The CO2 reduced to CH4 pathway is important for the generation of biogas in the geological history. The Quaternary biogenic gas fields in Qaidam Basin of China belong to the CO2/H2 reduction biogenic gas. According to the theory of H2/CO2 reduction, we have carried out the biosimulation experiments with different occurrences and different initial carbon isotope values of carbon sources. The experimental results indicate that there is a positive correlation between the δ13Cmethane values and the δ13C values of the substrate in products; In response to the existence of excessive substrate, the occurrence of substrate has its effect on the δ13Cmethane values. The δ13Cmethane values from free CO2 reduced to CH4 is relatively lower than those coming from HCO3− and CO32− ions. By applying to the Quaternary biogenic gas filed in the east of Qaidam Basin, the source and occurrences of the main substrate CO2 are discussed, and these have import reference significance for evaluating the biogas resources and searching for favorable exploration areas.

Abstract:Many authors, from different aspects, have modeled the carbon isotope fractionation effect during gas (methane) generation from organic matters (coals and kerogens) through different approaches. Many models about carbon isotope fractionation have been proposed. At the same time, the effects of catalysis and post-genetic process on gas carbon isotope have also been discussed. But the models can not describe carbon isotopic behavior of thermogenic methane in natural system completely, nor explain the mechanism of its fractionation perfectly. The reason is that the assumptions of the models are not completely suitable to the complexity of natural system. Furthermore, pyrolysis results are used as data source of many models. It is well known that pyrolysis has still a distance with natural process, so that the models, sometimes, can not be applied to real case successfully. To establish more perfect model with chemical kinetic approaches may be a focus in further work. And the effects of catalysis and post-genetic process on carbon isotope fractionation should also be considered.
A Kinetic Model for Isotopologue Signatures of Methane Generated by Biotic and Abiotic CO2 Methanation

Abstract:Methane has both biotic and abiotic origins, and the identification of its origins has important implications in understanding terrestrial processes as well as in searching for extraterrestrial life. Bulk stable isotope ratios (13C/12C and D/H) and multiply substituted isotopologues (13CH3D and 12CH2D2) have been used to distinguish methane’s origins, and kinetic models are essential to understanding and quantifying these isotopologue signatures. Although different kinetic models have been developed, inconsistencies exist within these models. Here we constructed an isotopologue-specific kinetic model to quantify isotopologue signatures of methane generated by biological- and metal-catalyzed CO2 methanation. The Monte Carlo method and data from two experiments were used to constrain the kinetic reversibility and associated isotope effects. The results show that the reversibility can be the same for the biotic and abiotic CO2 methanation pathways, and their distinct isotopic signatures depend on their respective hydrogen sources. Biotic methane sources hydrogen from carbon-hydrogen and sulfur-hydrogen bonds while abiotic methane sources from metal-hydrogen adsorption bonds. This hydrogen source difference results in abiotic methane being more depleted in 12CH2D2 relative to biotic methane. Although kinetic and dynamic complexities may prevent differentiation between biotic and abiotic methane in multiple and clumped isotope spaces, our proposed molecular-level difference in hydrogen source provides a universal basis for analyzing the isotopologue signatures of methane of diverse origins.
A Mathematical Diffusion Model of Carbon Isotopic Reversals inside Ultra-Tight Longmaxi Shale Matrixes

Abstract:Developing mathematical models for high Knudsen number (Kn) flow for isotopic gas fractionation in tight sedimentary rocks is still challenging. In this study, carbon isotopic reversals (δ13C1>δ13C2) were found for four Longmaxi shale samples based on gas degassing experiments. Gas in shale with higher gas content exhibits larger reversal. Then, a mathematical model was developed to simulate the carbon isotopic reversal of methane and ethane. This model is based on these hypotheses: (i) diffusion flow is dominating during gas transport process; (ii) diffusion coefficients are nonlinear depending on concentration gradient. Our model not only shows a good agreement with isotopic reversals, but also well predicts gas production rate by selecting appropriate exponents m and m* of gas pressure gradient, where m is for 12C and m* is for 13C. Moreover, the (m−m*) value has a positive correlation with fractionation level. (m1−m1*) of methane are much higher than that of ethane. Finally, the predicted carbon isotopic reversal magnitude (δ13C1−δ13C2) exhibits a positive relationship with total gas content since gas in shale with higher gas content experiences a more extensive high Kn number diffusion flow. As a result, our model demonstrates an impressive agreement with the experimental carbon isotopic reversal data.

Abstract:We have combined the analytical data of the carbon isotope distribution pattern, R/Ra and CH4/3He values of abiogenic and biogenic (referring to the thermogenic and bacterial or microbial) alkane gases in China with those of alkane gases from USA, Russia, Germany, Australia and other countries. Four discrimination criteria are derived from this comparative study: 1) Carbon isotopic composition is generally greater than -30C for abiogenic methane and less than -30C for biogenic methane; 2) Abiogenic alkane gases have a carbon isotopic reversal trend (delta 13C(1)> delta 13C(2)> delta 13C(3)> delta 13C(4)) with delta 13C(1)> -30C in general; 3) Gases with R/Ra > 0.5 and delta 13C(1)- delta 13C(2)> 0 are of abiogenic origin; 4) Gases (methane) with CH4/3He106 are of abiogenic origin, whereas gases with CH4/3He1011 are of biogenic origin.

Abstract:Unlike conventional natural gas reservoirs, shale gas development involves systematic changes in methane carbon isotopes that cannot be effectively described by existing isotope fractionation models and mechanisms. Therefore, based on fundamental theories such as Rayleigh fractionation, mass transfer flow, and mass conservation, this study established isotopic fractionation equations for methane in adsorbed and free gas. By considering adsorbed and free gases as two end-members and using an isotope mixing model, a fractionation model for methane carbon isotopes during shale gas desorption was constructed. This model quantifies the isotopic fractionation effects during shale gas desorption and elucidates the mechanism of methane carbon isotope fractionation. Using on-site desorbed gas content and isotope data, parameter fitting and model calculations were conducted to characterize methane carbon isotope variations throughout the process of shale core field desorption. The results show a pattern of "initially negative and then turning positive," consistent with those of physical simulation experiments. It was clarified that differences in mixing the two end-members and isotopic fractionation play key roles in the variation of methane carbon isotopic composition in shale gas. By applying the methane carbon isotope fractionation model, the contribution of adsorbed gas during shale gas production was explored. It was found that in the early stage of development, the adsorbed gas in Well JY 1 was negligible. After nearly seven years of development, the contribution of adsorbed gas in the later stage has only reached nearly 15%, indicating that the production contribution of adsorbed gas is still less than 0.3 million cubic feet per day. The open flow of Well JY 6-2 is more conducive to the production of adsorbed gas, but the production capacity is still mainly contributed by free gas, indicating that the shale gas production capacity in the later stage in the Jiaoshiba gas field is still primarily dominated by free gas.

Abstract:A new approach is presented in this paper for the dynamic modeling of the chemical and isotopic evolution of C1–3 during the hydrocarbon generation process. Based on systematic data obtained from published papers for the pyrolysis of various hydrocarbon sources (type I kerogen/source rock, type II kerogen/source rock, type III kerogen/source rock, crude oil, and asphalt, etc.), the empirical evolution framework of the chemical and isotopic composition of C1–3 during the hydrocarbon generation process was built. Although the empirical framework was built only by fitting a large amount of pyrolysis data, the chemical and isotopic composition of C1–3 derived from the pyrolysis experiments all follow evolution laws, convincing us that it is applicable to the thermal evolution process of various hydrocarbon sources. Based on the simplified formula of the isotopic composition of mixed natural gas at different maturities (δ13Cmixed), δ13Cmixed = X×niA×δ13CiA+Y×niB×δ13CiBX×niA+Y×niB, it can be derived that the cumulative isotopic composition of alkane generated in a certain maturity interval can be expressed by the integral of the product of the instantaneous isotopic composition and instantaneous yield at a certain maturity point, and then divided by the cumulative yield of alkane generated in the corresponding maturity interval. Thus, the cumulative isotopic composition (A(X)), cumulative yield (B(X)), instantaneous isotope (C(X)), and instantaneous yield (D(x)) in the dynamic model, comply with the following formula during the maturity interval of (X0~X). A(X) = ∫X0XCX×DXdxB(X), where A(X) and B(X) can be obtained by the fitting of pyrolysis data, and D(x) can also be obtained from the derivation of B(X). The dynamic model was applied on the pyrolysis data of Pingliang Shale to illustrate the quantitative evolution of the cumulative yield, instantaneous yield, cumulative isotope, and instantaneous isotope of C1–3 with increasing maturity. The dynamic model can quantify the yield of methane, ethane, and propane, as well as δ13C1, δ13C2, and δ13C3, respectively, during the hydrocarbon generation process. This model is of great significance for evaluating the natural gas resources of hydrocarbon source rock of different maturities and for identifying the origin and evolutionary process of hydrocarbons by chemical and isotopic data. Moreover, this model provides an approach to study the dynamic evolution of the isotope series of C1–3 (including reversed isotopic series), which is promising for revealing the mechanism responsible for isotopic reversal when combined with post-generation studies.

Abstract:The modeling of carbon isotope kinetics of natural gas is an issue driving pioneering research in the oil and gas geochemistry in China and internationally. Combined with the sedimentary burial history and basin geothermal history, the modeling of carbon isotope kinetics provides a new and effective means for the determination of the origin and accumulation history of natural gas pools. In this paper, we introduce themodeling of carbon isotope kinetics of natural gas formation and its applications to the assessment of natural gas maturity, the determination of the gas source, the history of gas accumulation, and the oil-gas ratio. It is shown that this approach is of great value for these applications. The carbon isotopic characteristics of natural gas are not only affected by the gas source and maturity of the source rock, but also are related to the accumulation condition and geothermal gradient in a basin. There are obvious differences in the characteristics of carbon isotope ratios between instantaneous gas and cumulative gas. Different basins have different kinetic models of carbon isotope fractionation, which depends on the gas source condition, the accumulation history and the sedimentary-tectonic history. Since the origin of natural gas in the superimposed basin in China is very complicated, and the natural gas pool is characterized by multiphase and variable gas-sources, this paper may provide a new perspective on the study and evaluation of natural gas.

Abstract:A number of contributions have demonstrated that the stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions together with molecular compositions have a great significance on determination for gas origin and gas generation pathways of biogenic gases. Together with some data from published work, a total of 143 gas samples were compiled from different biogenic gas producing locations in China, to investigate the gas origin and gas generation pathways by the molecular composition, stable carbon and hydrogen isotopes. The results demonstrate that biogenic gases in China are dominated by methane with low level of C2+3 (generally less than 0.5%) and low δ13CCH4 values (generally≤55‰). The relatively high level of C2+3 (up to 11.79%) in the biogenic gases from the Baise and Songliao basins indicates the possible mixture of low-mature thermogenic gases. Biogenic gases from the Jiangzhe coastal area (including Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu provinces) and Yingqiong basin have δDCH4 values greater than −190‰, indicating marine salt water depositional environments. However, all other gases have δDCH4 values less than −190‰, possibly indicating a terrestrial freshwater or freshwater to slightly saline water depositional environment. The methanogenic pathway of biogenic gases in China is dominated by biogenic carbonate reduction, though a number of these biogenic gases were generated in a terrestrial freshwater or freshwater to slightly saline water depositional environments. Compared to the bacterial carbonate reduction methanognic pathway in the Luliang basin, gas formation mechanism in the Baoshan basin was more toward bacterial methyl-type fermentation, likely due to the relatively higher geothermal gradient in the Baoshan basin.
Diagenetic Evolution of Marine Carbonate Reservoirs: A Case Study from M51-2 Submember of Middle Ordovician Majiagou Formation in SE Ordos Basin, China

Abstract:In the Yan'an gas field, southeast of Ordos Basin, the discovered natural gas reserves are 114 billion cubic meters. Highly productive gas reservoirs were formed in paleokarst. By using 164 samples from 27cores, the geochemical study of diagenetic evolution was carried out, and the relationship between different diagenesis environments was discussed by using scanning electron microscopy, carbon and oxygen isotope, and isotopic and fluid inclusion microthermometric observations. Results show that the lithology of reservoir is anhydrite-bearing mud powder crystal dolomite, powder crystal dolomite, and karst breccia dolomite; the filling includes dolomite, calcite, anhydrite, quartz, fluorite, and clay minerals; δ13C (‰ PDB) value is between −6.31‰ and 1.01‰, δ18O (‰ PDB) value ranges from −11.36‰ to −6.54‰, and the 87Sr/86Sr value ranges from 0.7077 to 0.7081. The overall carbon isotope of Majiagou Formation decreases first and then increases, and the strontium isotope evolution curve generally increases first and then decreases, indicating that the water environment of Majiagou Formation experienced a relatively high salinity concentration period and a relative desalinization period during deposition. The stratigraphic development shows a cyclical trend, responding to the multistage transgression and regression process. The homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions is 70–100°C, salinity is 0–3.5%, homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions is 70–100°C, salinity is >3.5%, homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions is 100–160°C, salinity is 0–3.5%, homogenization temperature of fluid inclusions is 100–160°C, salinity is >3.5%, homogenization temperature of fluid inclusion temperature is 160–200°C, and salinity is >3.5%, indicating that the fluid source in the sedimentation and diagenesis process is seawater, atmospheric freshwater, hydrocarbon fluid, and deep thermal fluid. The diagenetic environments are divided into marine diagenetic environments, metric freshwater diagenetic environments, and burial diagenetic environments.

Abstract:Simulation experiment is an important part in the study on organic geochemistry. It is also an important means for the research of oil and gas geochemistry. According to the analysis of component and isotope composition of pyrolytic gases generated from simulation of coal and its main macerals, we replenish and perfect the predecessor's cognition of isotopic composition in pyrolytic gases generated from simulation in this paper. Moreover, we contrastively study the fractional characteristics of carbon isotope in coal-type gases and pyrolytic gases, and the result shows that they have favourable consistency. Basing on careful simulation, we can gain the decisive index of coal-type gases generated from different coal-bearing sedimentary basin. To the contrast of carbon isotopic composition between natural gases and simulation gases, what the most important is how to deal with the isotopic analysis data. According to the carbon isotope analysis of the simulation series products, we obtain the relationship between methane, ethane carbon isotopic composition and evolution stage in natural gas with single source, and the relationship between methane carbon isotope and ethane carbon isotope in evolution process. All of these results have an important significance to judgie gases of mixed sources.
13C-enriched carbonate precipitates reveal intense methanogenic oil degradation in the upper Wuerhe Formation, Northwest China

Abstract:Microbial methanogenesis from crude oil is an important source of CH4 for gas reservoirs and atmospheric greenhouse gases. However, its petrological records have not been found in natural environments, and the geological conditions under which it may occur remain unclear. Here, we provide the first petrological evidence of Fe(III)-mediated methanogenic hydrocarbon degradation in a deep subsurface oil reservoir in Northwest China. The major findings are as follows: (1) highly positive δ13C values (up to +16‰) of secondary calcite attributed to methanogenesis; (2) paragenetic relation of high-δ13C calcite to biodegraded hydrocarbon; and (3) remarkably high FeO contents (up to 8 wt%) and heavy δ56Fe ratios (up to +0.52‰) in calcite, indicative of microbial Fe(III) reduction. Our study shows that methanogenic hydrocarbon degradation can occur in Fe(III)-reducing environments. This process transformed hydrocarbons into CO2 and CH4, where the former mostly precipitated as Fe-rich calcite (the carbon sink), while the latter, representing an estimated ⁓1968 Tg, might have escaped into the overburden and atmosphere from the Permian reservoir during the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic, which may have acted as an important CH4 source in changing global climate in the geological past.

Abstract:Compound specific carbon isotope analysis was conducted for crude oils collected from a drilling well and the entire oilfield at Lunnan, Tarim Basin, NW China, and the results demonstrated that there was an unusual distribution of δ13C showing that carbon isotope was enriched in Ordovician oils and depleted in Upper Triassic oils. This unusual distribution is consistent with the distribution and evolution of carbon isotope of crude oils from all over the world in geological history, and cannot be explained by simply utilizing conventional models based on the differences in organic facies or sources, maturity, deposi-tional environment, or migration fractionation, etc. . in consideration of the great span in geologic times-cale between Ordovician and Triassic periods. It is illustrated from a survey of geochemical literature that the unusual distribution of stable carbon isotope of crude oils was associated with the global paleoenviron-mental changes such as in atmospheric CO2 and algae growth rates, etc. , and was indeed resulted from the combination of the positive excursion of δ13C values in Ordovician period and the negative excursion in Triassic period. Crude oils, as a product of sedimentation and a kind of fossil fuels, recorded the paleoenvir-onmental and paleoclimatical changes in geological history, their stable carbon isotope is also controlled by these changes.
Investigations of Methane Adsorption Characteristics on Marine-Continental Transitional Shales and Gas Storage Capacity Models Considering Pore Evolution

Abstract:Methane adsorption is a critical assessment of the gas storage capacity (GSC) of shales with geological conditions. Although the related research of marine shales has been well-illustrated, the methane adsorption of marine-continental transitional (MCT) shales is still ambiguous. In this study, a method of combining experimental data with analytical models was used to investigate the methane adsorption characteristics and GSC of MCT shales collected from the Qinshui Basin, China. The Ono-Kondo model was used to fit the adsorption data to obtain the adsorption parameters. Subsequently, the geological model of GSC based on pore evolution was constructed using a representative shale sample with a total organic carbon (TOC) content of 1.71%, and the effects of reservoir pressure coefficient and water saturation on GSC were explored. In experimental results, compared to the composition of the MCT shale, the pore structure dominates the methane adsorption, and meanwhile, the maturity mainly governs the pore structure. Besides, maturity in the middle-eastern region of the Qinshui Basin shows a strong positive correlation with burial depth. The two parameters, micropore pore volume and non-micropore surface area, induce a good fit for the adsorption capacity data of the shale. In simulation results, the depth, pressure coefficient, and water saturation of the shale all affect the GSC. It demonstrates a promising shale gas potential of the MCT shale in a deeper block, especially with low water saturation. Specifically, the economic feasibility of shale gas could be a major consideration for the shale with a depth of <800 m and/or water saturation >60% in the Yushe-Wuxiang area. This study provides a valuable reference for the reservoir evaluation and favorable block search of MCT shale gas.

This study reports grain size, major/trace elements, total nitrogen (TN), total carbon (TC), total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur (TS), magnetic susceptibility and AMS-14C measurements for sediment samples in a drill core (~282 cm long; Site Q6 at ~1400 m water depth) from the 'Haima seep' sedimentary area in the Qiongdongnan Basin, along the northern slope of the South China Sea (SCS). The alternative index system for paleo-methane seepage identification was established through testing and analysis, and three methane release events (MREs) were successfully identified: 254–282 cm (MRE1: 19.3–17.8 ka), 144–162 cm (MRE2: 11. 9–10.8 ka) and 90–124 cm (MRE3: 10.0–8.5 ka). When methane seepage occurred, the enrichment of authigenic carbonate minerals (high Mg-calcite or aragonite) led to the increase in the content of CaO and 'dilution' in the total rare earth element content (∑REE). However, the occurrence of authigenic pyrite resulted in a significant increase in TS and the total sulfur/total organic carbon ratio (S/C) in the sediments, and a synchronous decrease in the magnetic susceptibility. Meanwhile, the change of redox environment also induced the enrichment of Mo, U, and the positive anomaly of δCe. Based on the records of methane release events, the control mechanisms for the different time scales and different periods, such as sea level change, sea floor temperature change, and turbidity current activity were preliminarily discussed. Finally, the history of methane seepage activity was reconstructed, and conceptual diagrams were drawn of the study area encompassing the last 20 ka.

Abstract:Early diagenesis affects the distribution of solutes and minerals in unconsolidated sediments. The investigation of diagenesis is critical to understanding the geochemical transformation and benthic fluxes of elements. During the cruise mission SO-177 in 2004, gravity coring samples were recovered in the Haiyang 4 Area of the northern slope of the South China Sea (SCS). The geochemical concentrations in interstitial water were determined onboard. The 1D C.CANDI reactive transport software was used to model the early diagenesis processes at four sites: 56-GC-3, 70-GC-9, 94-GC-11, and 118-GC-13. All of the simulations reproduced concentration profiles that matched the measurements with the implemented geochemical reactions. The degradation of organic carbon and anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) primarily determine the distribution of solutes in the working area. The degradation is active in the top 150 cm, and AOM is vigorous at depths below 200 cm. The local advective flux, sediment rate, and kinetic reaction constants of organic matter, methane and sulfate were calibrated based on the existing concentrations of pore water solutes. Geochemical reactions in this area occur in considerably deeper layers compared to depths cited in the literature. The model results provide evidence for the existence of deep hydrocarbon reservoirs that provide methane to the upper sediments.

Abstract:The kinetic fractionation model for hydrogen isotope fractionation for methane, ethane and propane formation is tested in this study. The model agrees very well with the current existing model of carbon isotope fractionation for coal-derived gas from the Kuqa depression, Tarim basin, China. The strong correlation of carbon and hydrogen isotopes between theory and field data proves that it is unlikely that hydrogen isotopes will exchange with water under the gas formation condition. Using both gas carbon and hydrogen isotopes can further constrain our prediction of gas maturity, formation age and accumulation patterns for a natural gas system. Based on the carbon and hydrogen isotope fractionation model and field data, our results show the gas in the Kuqa depression was overmature in the central depression with Ro values up to 1.9–2.0% in the Kela 2 gas field and the gas maturity was much lower in the southern Front Uplift with Ro values ranging from 1.3% to 1.7%, which agree well with the distribution characteristics of the maturity of the local source rocks. However, the predicted gas maturity in the Front Uplift was relatively higher than that of the local source rocks, which probably indicates natural gases in the Front Uplift were migrated from the central depression. Our prediction demonstrates that natural gases in the Kuqa depression were formed during the last 3–5 million years and the gas formation temperature was 170–200°C, which is consistent with the burial history of the depression. According to our results, the potential accumulation pattern for the gas in the Kuqa depression is that gases were formed at depth and expelled from the Kuqa depression and migrated vertically along faults to some traps and formed giant gas fields, or migrated from north to south and accumulated in the Front Uplift or mixed with previous oil fields and formed condensate oil gas fields.

Abstract:Distinctive sedimentary structures, textures, and extremely negative delta C-13(carb) values from the Ediacaran Doushantuo cap carbonate (ca. 635 Ma) in south China were taken as evidence for a methane hydrate destabilization event, but existing data for a methane-derived delta C-13(carb) signature were reported from a single locality in the Yangtze Gorges area. Here we report negative delta C-13(carb) values as low as -48 parts per thousand (Vienna Peedee belemnite) from two additional sections similar to 6 km and 55 km from the original locality. These negative delta C-13(carb) values were obtained from isopachous cements that fill stromatactis-like cavities, sheet cracks, and fractures, and from partially recrystallized carbonate crusts, consistent with carbonate precipitation at cold methane seeps. The new data support a widespread methane release event following the Nantuo glaciation in south China (ca. 635 Ma), which may have contributed to the origin of unusual sedimentary and isotope features of cap carbonates.

Abstract:Methane isotope gas fractionation is an interesting topic during pressure depletion process. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted to investigate transport characteristics of isotopologues (12CH4 and 13CH4) in 2 nm and 6.8 nm diameter carbon nanotubes (CNT) at temperature of 353 K. Pressure differential (Δp) are set to be 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 MPa for 2 nm pore, and 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 MPa for 6.8 nm pore, respectively. In this regard, isotopologues flow derived by pressure differential were simulated in both pores. The simulation results showed that transport diffusion coefficient ratio of 13CH4 to 12CH4 (D*/D) exhibited different variation trends as pressure dropped. Gas became "light" (D*/D decreased) first at the beginning and then it became "heavy" (D*/D increased) toward the end, which was coincident with the experimental results. Our analysis manifested that 13CH4 with a stronger adsorption affinity had a lower desorption rate, indicating that more 13CH4 molecules were accumulated in adsorption layers and free state gas were enriched in 12CH4, which resulted in the evident fractionation at the early gas desorption stage. As pressure dropped further, more 13CH4 molecules were triggered to desorb from pore surfaces and became free state gas, which made production gas be enriched in 13CH4 and fractionation correspondingly became less evident. Moreover, fractionation was obvious in smaller pores as gas transport shifted to high Knudsen (Kn) flow. Our simulation result bridges the nano-scaled isotope gas transport in porous medium with the reservoir engineering.
