Abstract:Knowledge work productivity is regarded as one of the biggest challenge in the 21st century. Obviously, grasping at the rules and characteristics of knowledge work is the prerequisite and basis for solving this problem. Based on the analysis of knowledge work’s non-procedure and non-standard characteristic, this paper discusses the hierarchical structure of knowledge work and estab- lishes the tree-structure model of knowledge work. This model describes knowledge workers’ different understanding for the same tasks, which reflects knowledge work’s non-procedural and non- standard characteristic contained in the hierarchical structure. Meanwhile, this paper introduces the concept of structural entropy and analyzes the knowledge work productivity based on the struc- tural entropy. The structural entropy concept expressed in the quan- titative form of the degree of non-procedure & non-standard, it also reflects the uncertain understanding to the task of knowledge work- ers. Under the analytical framework of structural entropy, this paper discusses the knowledge work productivity, from which the paper finds the optimal productivity of the corresponding procedure and standard as well as the innovational behavior potentially exists in the knowledge work. This study provides a new perspective of pro- cedure and standard for improving the knowledge work productivi- ty. The paper concludes that, as for the knowledge work, procedures and standardization do not necessarily lead to optimal performance. Too high or too low standardization and procedures will affect the productivity of knowledge work. The mastery of knowledge work’s structural rules, efforts to achieve knowledge work’s standardized management, excavating the innovation activities of knowledge work and promoting the knowledge sharing, will be the important ways for improving the knowledge work productivity.
