Abstract:In the using of materials, kinds of injury which is sometimes difficult to repair or too costly to repair may appear in the surface and interior, which will shorten the life of the materials. Self-healing technology can be used to improve material reliability and extend the service life, so composite materials with self-healing capability become an important research content of smart materials. Self-healing materials can perform self-diagnosis after suffered from external forces and repair the crack or damage in a certain degree. According to the healing agents applied or not in the self-healing process, self-healing methods in polymer materials can be classified into extrinsic self-healing and intrinsic self-healing. Based on the latest research achievements, several typical extrinsic self-healing methods are summarized, including microcapsule self-healing, hollow-fiber self-healing and microcapsule self-healing. Several repairing mechanisms, self-healing system characteristic, existing problems and present research status are elaborated. Future research on self-healing materials is prospected, optimizing and developing new healing agents system in order to improve the self-healing efficiency and realizing the true smart materials.

Abstract:The material would inevitably suffer a series of damages in operation, including cracks, piercing and delamination, which would lead to a degradation of performance and even cause safety problems. Self-healing materials could partially or completely heal themselves after being damaged, so that the performance of materials could be restored to the original state. In this review, we focus on the self-healing materials in mechanicals, performances and features. We classified the self-healing materials based on the two strategies including extrinsic mechanism and intrinsic mechanism. The main difference between the two strategies is whether the healing agent is added during the self-healing process. The principles, preparation methods and self-healing properties of microcapsule technology, hollow fiber technology and microvascular technology based on extrinsic mechanism are reviewed. The mechanical properties and self-healing properties of intrinsic self-healing materials are discussed based on non-covalent bond interaction and covalent bond interaction. Several typical instances to outline the applications of self-healing materials, including wearable sensors, supercapacitors, batteries, and sensors, are provided. Finally, the future development and outlook of self-healing materials were discussed.

Abstract:The varying self-healing mechanisms are summarized: the 1st generation polymer composite based on microcapsules or liquid core fibers,the 2nd generation polymer composite based on biomimetic vascular network,the molecular self-healing based on reversible covalent bond formation,the self-healing based on reversible non-covalent bond formation,and the self-healing together with self-sensing.The associated reactions,the characteristics and hea-ling coefficiency are discussed.Lastly,the research trends and hot spots are prospected.

Abstract:Engineered self-healing materials inspired by natural biological organisms that can repair damage are receiving increasing interest in recent years. Most studies have been focused on self-healing polymers, concretes, and ceramics. Self-healing metallic materials pose challenges due to the high temperatures used in manufacturing and the chemistries involved. This article summarizes and evaluates the self-healing mechanisms used in metallic materials and reviews recent studies into self-healing in aluminum, zinc, and Sn-Bi alloys. Generalizations about the various classifications are drawn from the review highlighting major hurdles in the widespread practical application of metallic self-healing materials, as well as the potential directions for future studies.

Abstract:Abstract:: The most intriguing area of scientific study and engineering applications is to synthetize materials that can autonomously heal damage similar to biological tissues. Since the concept of self-healing materials was established, several variations of self-healing polymer materials have been developed based on distinct healing techniques. This review outlines the most recent breakthroughs in self-healing polymers and utilizes the opportunity to categories the descriptions of self-healing technologies in the literatures according to extrinsic and intrinsic routes (noncovalent bonds, physical interaction, and covalent bonds). The major focus is on the routes and strategies used to generate self-healing polymer materials. In addition, the strengths and weaknesses of polymer materials with different self-healing routes and strategies in terms of mechanical and self-healing properties were summarized. Furthermore, we also reviewed the progress of the development from a single selfhealing mechanism to multiple self-healing mechanisms to achieve balanced comprehensive performance. Finally, the future trajectory of self-healing polymers is envisioned.

Abstract:Self-healing polymer composites possess the inherent ability to heal the damage event autonomically or non-autonomically with external intervention. These advanced materials can be commercialized if the challenges and limitations of different self-healing mechanisms are well known and considered. These include capsule-based healing systems, vascular healing systems, and intrinsic healing systems. To date, most of the reviews have studied and reported on different self-healing mechanisms including their response to impact, fatigue, and corrosion tests. This review focuses mostly on extrinsic and intrinsic self-healing polymer composites which have been reported during the past five years by comparing their healing efficiency, advantages, and challenges in the prospect of their future development as well as their possible applications across various industries such as aerospace, automobile, coating, electronics, energy, etc.

Abstract:Formation of microcracks is a critical problem in polymers and polymer composites during their service in structural applications. Development and coalescence of microcracks would bring about catastrophic failure of the materials and then reduce their lifetimes. Therefore, early sensing, diagnosis and repair of microcracks become necessary for removing the latent perils. In this context, the materials possessing self-healing function are ideal for long-term operation. Self-repairing polymers and polymer composites have attracted increasing research interests. Attempts have been made to develop solutions in this field. The present article reviews state-of-art of the achievements on the topic. According to the ways of healing, the smart materials are classified into two categories: (i) intrinsic self-healing ones that are able to heal cracks by the polymers themselves, and (ii) extrinsic in which healing agent has to be pre-embedded. The advances in this field show that selection and optimization of proper repair mechanisms are prerequisites for high healing efficiency. It is a challenging job to either invent new polymers with inherent crack repair capability or integrate existing materials with novel healing system.

Abstract:In the past few years, extrinsic self-healing based on microencapsulated healing agent received more and more research interests. Self-healing of a variety of materials (including thermosets and thermoplastics, rigid, and elastomeric) has been demonstrated by using this technique, which enables recovery of not only mechanical properties but also non-structural functional properties. The present chapter presents a comprehensive review of the recent progress in this field from the viewpoint of material design and preparation. The trends and challenges are concluded at the end of the chapter. It is hoped that the readers will be provided with a grasp of the achievements to date and an insight into the future development.

Abstract:Research on self-healing materials spans multiple academic disciplines and employs a variety of methodologies. Nature has been a major source of inspiration for developing self-healing materials and will likely continue to inspire innovative ideas in this field. This review article covers the principles of self-healing mechanisms, focusing on both autonomous and non-autonomous procedures. It explores both intrinsic and extrinsic self-healing abilities by considering their components, structures, and design. Additionally, a detailed analysis of the application of these materials across various sectors is provided, including aerospace, automotive, marine, energy, medical and healthcare, military, and construction. Finally, the review paper highlights the advancements in encapsulation technologies for microcapsules, their thermal stability, their mechanical properties, and the compatibility of healing agents with the matrix, which play a crucial role in the effectiveness of self-healing processes.

Abstract:Self-healing polymers represent a class of materials with built-in capability of rehabilitating damages. The topic has attracted increasingly more attention in the past few years. The on-going research activities clearly indicate that self-healing polymeric materials turn out to be a typical multi-disciplinary area concerning polymer chemistry, organic synthesis, polymer physics, theoretical and experimental mechanics, processing, composites manufacturing, interfacial engineering, etc. The present article briefly reviews the achievements of the groups worldwide, and particularly the work carried out in our own laboratory towards strength recovery for structural applications. To ensure sufficient coverage, thermoplastics and thermosetting polymers, extrinsic and intrinsic self-healing, autonomic and non-autonomic healing approaches are included. Innovative routes that correlate materials chemistry to full capacity restoration are discussed for further development from bioinspired toward biomimetic repair.

Abstract:Self-healing polymer is a kind of functional polymer material that can repair mechanical damages such as scratches and cracks.The special self-healing ability is of great significance to prolong the service life of polymer materials.Due to mild healing conditions and repeatable healing,the intrinsic self-healing polymer has become a research hotspot.In this paper,the self-healing polymer materials with reversible non-covalent bonds including hydrogen bond and coordination bond as well as the self-healing polymer materials with reversible covalent bonds including Diels-Alder bond,imine bond and disulfide bond were introduced,and the preparation process,healing mechanism and healing property were summarized.Finally,the development of intrinsic self-healing polymer materials was also pros-pected.

Abstract:Polymers and polymer composites with advanced functions have attracted great attention following the development of modern science and technologies. Nevertheless, damages of microstructures and variations of chemical constitutes are inevitably induced during their manufacturing and operation, causing undesired attenuation or even loss of functionalities. To address the problems, self-healable functional polymeric materials, which focus on autonomous restoration of non-structural functionalities for improving the lifespan and durability, have emerged in recent years as a huge surge of interest because of their apparent potential benefits. As dictated by the diverse working principles of the individual functionalities, the technical advance of self-healing functional polymers and composites exhibits distinct characteristics from that of self-healing structural materials specializing in strength recovery. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art achievements in the field, and discusses the common features and issues in most of the reported self-healing functional materials including healable electroconductive, thermally conductive, dielectric, optically transparent, superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic, and power conversion and storage related polymers. The review will subsequently discuss (i) the damage modes relating to different causes, (ii) the mechanisms of self-healing based on chemical and physical methodologies, and (iii) molecular level design schemes and synthesis strategies for self-healing functional polymeric materials. The advantages and inadequacies of representative works are discussed, and the critical challenges and opportunities for future research are highlighted. It is hoped that the present article would inspire more innovative explorations of self-healing functional polymeric materials, as well as promote their practical application.

Abstract:Composites can be divided into three groups based on their matrix materials, namely polymer, metal and ceramic. Composite materials fail due to micro cracks. Repairing is complex and almost impossible if cracks appear on the surface and interior, which minimizes reliability and material life. In order to save the material from failure and prolong its lifetime without compromising mechanical properties, self-healing is one of the emerging and best techniques. The studies to address the advantages and challenges of self-healing properties of different matrix materials are very limited; however, this review addresses all three different groups of composites. Self-healing composites are fabricated to heal cracks, prevent any obstructed failure, and improve the lifetime of structures. They can self-diagnose their structure after being affected by external forces and repair damages and cracks to a certain degree. This review aims to provide information on the recent developments and prospects of self-healing composites and their applications in various fields such as aerospace, automobiles etc. Fabrication and characterization techniques as well as intrinsic and extrinsic self-healing techniques are discussed based on the latest achievements, including microcapsule embedment, fibers embedment, and vascular networks self-healing.
