Abstract:This paper is dedicated to studying the steady state problem of a population-toxicant model with negative toxicant-taxis, subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The model captures the phenomenon in which the population migrates away from regions with high toxicant density towards areas with lower toxicant concentration. This paper establishes sufficient conditions for the non-existence and existence of non-constant positive steady state solutions. The results indicate that in the case of a small toxicant input rate, a strong toxicant-taxis mechanism promotes population persistence and engenders spatially heterogeneous coexistence (see, Theorem 2.3). Moreover, when the toxicant input rate is relatively high, the results unequivocally demonstrate that the combination of a strong toxicant-taxis mechanism and a high natural growth rate of the population fosters population persistence, which is also characterized by spatial heterogeneity (see, Theorem 2.4).

Abstract:This paper deals with a diffusive population-toxicant model in polluted aquatic environments, with a toxicant-taxis term describing a toxicant-induced behavior change, that is, the population tends to move away from locations with high-level toxicants. The global existence of solutions is established by the techniques of the semigroup estimation and Moser iteration. Based on a detailed study on the properties of the principal eigenvalue for non-self-adjoint eigenvalue problems, we investigated the local and global stability of the toxin-only steady-state solution and the existence of positive steady state, which yields sufficient conditions that lead to population persistence or extinction. Finally, by numerical simulations, we studied the effects of some key parameters, such as toxicant-taxis coefficient, advection rate, and effect coefficient of the toxicant on population growth, on population persistence. Both numerical and analytical results show that a weak chemotaxis effect, a small advection rate of the population, and a weak effect of the toxicant on population growth are favorable for population persistence.

Abstract:In this paper, the periodic solutions of a stochastic two-prey one-predator model with impulsive perturbations in a polluted environment are focussed. The existence of global positive periodic solutions to the model are discussed by constructing the auxiliary system, and the sufficient conditions for the global attractivity of the periodic solutions are given by using Lyapunov method. An example is introduced to illustrate the effectiveness of our main results.

Abstract:We study a mathematical model of two species competing in a chemostat for two internally stored essential nutrients, where the nutrients are added to the culture vessel by way of periodic forcing functions. Persistence of a single species happens if the nutrient supply is sufficient to allow it to acquire a threshold of average stored nutrient quota required for growth to balance dilution. More precisely, the population is washed out if a sub-threshold criterion holds, while there is a globally stable positive periodic solution, if a super-threshold criterion holds. When there is mutual invasibility of both semitrivial periodic solutions of the two-species model, both uniform persistence and the existence of periodic coexistence state are established.

Abstract:We are first concerned with the discrete Beverton-Holt equation where and are two positive -periodic sequences. We find a sufficient condition that ensures if the origin is unstable, there exists a unique positive -periodic solution that globally attracts all positive solutions. This confirms the Cushing-Henson conjecture (a) under weaker conditions. A necessary and sufficient condition on the local stability of the origin is also provided. Then, based on this discrete equation, a single-species population model is proposed to describe the sterile insect technique for mosquito suppression. Some sufficient conditions on bistability are obtained. There is a stable extinction equilibrium and exactly two periodic orbits. One orbit is a repellor, and the other is an attractor.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a time periodic non-monotone and nonlocal delayed reaction-diffusion population model with stage structure. We first prove the existence of the asymptotic speed c ∗ c^* of spread by virtue of two auxiliary equations and comparison arguments. By the method of super- and sub-solutions and the fixed point theorem, as applied to the truncated problem on a finite interval, and the limiting arguments, we then establish the existence of time periodic traveling wave solutions of the model system with wave speed c > c ∗ c>c^* . We further use the results of the asymptotic speed of spread to obtain the non-existence of traveling wave solutions for wave speed c > c ∗ c>c^* . Finally, we prove the existence of the critical periodic traveling wave with wave speed c = c ∗ c=c^* . It turns out that the asymptotic speed of spread coincides with the minimal wave speed for positive periodic traveling waves. These results are also applied to the model system with two prototypical birth functions.
Extinction in two dimensional discrete Lotka-Volterra competitive system with the effect of toxic substances

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a nonautonomous discrete Lotka-Volterra system of two species with the effect of toxic substances. We prove that one of the components will be driven to extinction while the other will be globally attractive with any positive solution of a discrete logistic equation under some conditions. For periodic case, we also obtain another set of sufficient conditions which guarantee the extinction and the existence of a globally stable periodic solution. It is shown that toxic substances play an important role in the extinction of species. Copyright ©2008 Watam Press.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Volume 84, Issue 6, Page 2219-2237, December 2024. Understanding the role of a time-varying domain on population survival or extinction is an interesting question in ecology. In this study we construct a reaction-diffusion model on a periodically evolving domain subject to the no-flux boundary condition, with a novel feature that the growth mechanism of populations also periodically varies. For this model we identify key factors to determine the long-term behavior of populations when the growth is of KPP type, strong Allee type, and weak Allee type, respectively. In particular, when a bistability structure appears, by appealing to the dynamical system theory developed in [Y. Wang and J. Yao, J. Funct. Anal., 283 (2022), 109538] we obtain a sharp convergence to periodic solutions. For bistable populations, we prove that there exists a unique critical distribution distinguishing population survival and extinction when we continuously vary a family of ordered initial distributions. Further, numerical simulations indicate that such critical distributions may depend on the connectivity of the varying domain; the loss of connectivity may suppress population survival, although there is no loss in the emerging boundaries.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a stochastic chemostat model with impulsive perturbation on the nutrient. First, the existence and uniqueness of solutions are proved by constructing a pulseless equivalent system. Second, based on Khasminskii's Markov periodic process theory, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of positive T-periodic solutions. Third, under certain conditions, the existence and global attractivity of boundary periodic solutions are established by using comparison theorem. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to verify our main results.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the almost periodic dynamics of a multispecies Lotka-Volterra mutualism system with time varying delays on time scales. By establishing some dynamic inequalities on time scales, a permanence result for the model is obtained. Furthermore, by means of the almost periodic functional hull theory on time scales and Lyapunov functional, some criteria are obtained for the existence, uniqueness and global attractivity of almost periodic solutions of the model. Our results complement and extend some scientific work in recent years. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the main results.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the existence of positive periodic solutions of generalized Leslie–Gower-type population models. Using the topological degree, we provide sufficient conditions to demonstrate the existence of positive periodic solutions to the considered models. It is interesting that the positive periodic solutions in this paper are general positive functions, not e exponential functions, which generalizes and improves the existing results. We note that due to the symmetrical property of periodic solutions, the results of this paper provide a deeper understanding of the periodic behavior of biological populations. Two numerical examples show the effectiveness of our main results.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, Volume 83, Issue 6, Page 2212-2236, December 2023. Because of the significance of remediating contaminated ecosystems, many mathematical models have been developed to describe the interactions between populations and toxicants in polluted aquatic environments. These models typically neglect the consequences of toxicant-induced behavioral changes on population dynamics. Taking into account that individuals may flee from areas with high toxicant concentrations to areas with low toxicant concentrations in order to improve their chances of survival, growth, and reproduction, we develop a diffusive population-toxicant model with toxicant-taxis. We establish the global well-posedness of our model and prove the global stability of spatially homogeneous toxicant-only steady states and population-toxicant coexistence steady states under some conditions. We find conditions under which stable spatially inhomogeneous steady states become unstable to trigger spatial pattern formations as the toxicant-taxis is strong. We also identify a narrow parameter regime in which toxicant-only and population-toxicant coexistence steady states are bistable. Numerical simulations are performed to illustrate that spatial aggregation and segregation patterns between the population and the toxicant will typically emerge. Our study highlights the important effects of toxicant-induced movement responses on the spatial distributions of populations in polluted aquatic environments.

Abstract:A stochastic toxin-mediated Lotka–Volterra competitive model with time-delay is formulated. Our primary goal is to study the impacts of white noise, environmental toxins and time-delay on population dynamics of the model. To begin with, we demonstrate that there exists a globally positive solution with the aid of constructing Lyapunov function. Then we discuss the uniform boundedness of the pth moment and invariant measure for the solution by Krylov–Bogoliubov theorem. Moreover, persistence and extinction are significant subjects in the study of biological population systems, so we further derive the sufficient conditions for weak persistence, persistence in time average and extinction of the solution, which can serve as a theoretical basis for protecting the diversity of aquatic organisms. In addition, using exponential martingale inequality and Borel–Cantelli lemma, the asymptotic pathwise estimation of system is given. Notably, we creatively explore the probability density function of the converted model, which is based on addressing the corresponding Fokker–Planck equation. In the end, utilizing computer simulation to illuminate the dominating results and reveal the influences of the above disturbances on the aquatic ecological population, such as high concentration of toxins can result in extinction, but a certain level of toxins can promote the persistence of highly resistant species.
