Abstract:The objective world consists of material world and information world, each world has two proorties -- existence and activity, then the objective world has four inherences -- material, energy; information, and intelligence.The material science is the study of material world, which is a great disciplines and now is very considerably rich and complete. Information science is the study of information world, which is also a major disciplines, but the development of its theoretical system just started, in which there are many rules needed to be explored. In this paper, the process of building material scientific system will be reviewed carefully, from which we are able to get some important enlightenments for the development of theoretical system of information science.

Abstract:With the development of information science and technology, people’s cognition of information concept is gradually changing. The author puts forward a new concept of information science. It is believed that the universe is composed of two parallel worlds: the material world and the information world. In the material world, there are two main elements: matter and energy. In the information world, there are also two main elements: information and intelligence. To a certain extent, material science, energy science, information science, and intelligence science can be considered as four independent disciplines. This report explains the meaning, basic properties, patterns of change, mutual differences, and relationships of the four major elements of material, energy, information, and intelligence.

Abstract:This article is seeking to provide some valuable insights for improving the theoretical basis of information science from the perspective of post-structuralism.We reviewed how these theories related with post-structuralism theory(correspondence theory of truth,discourse analysis,hermeneutics) understand information.And we analyzed how the post-structuralism is reflected in the two major areas of information science(information retrieval and user research),we take the discourse analysis and hermeneutics as information science research methods.Finally,we pointed some possible impacts on information science which the post-structuralism may produce.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the hierarchies of needs of human being,namely needs of existence,needs of enjoyment and needs of development,On the basis of which divides human life into two segments: the lower things and the higher things.The paper points out that any layer of the needs of human can originate different information needs and behaviors.So far information science only focuses on the information need and behavior originated by needs of existence and lacks attentions to the higher things in human life.The paper generalizes existing higher things in information science and the impact of the introduction of higher things to information and outlines a conceptual framework of information science based on both lower things and higher things in human life.

Abstract:The paper introduces the theory and model of feedback in cybernetics and social science,and the current feedback ideas in information science.On this basis,the paper points out that information science should possess its own specific theory and model of feedback rather than copy mechanically other discipline's theory and model of feedback.The paper argues that the cognitive viewpoint and the situational viewpoint are the foundation stones for establishing the theory and model of feedback.The paper establishes the theory of feedback for information science based on the cognitive viewpoint and the situational viewpoint,and integrates two of them.Finally,taking the specific field of information analysis for example,the paper analyzes the model of feedback for information science based on the cognitive viewpoint and the situational viewpoint.

Abstract:What are the appropriate concepts of information? This is an old issue, yet which has to be the No.1 and cannot be ignored in the study of information science. Diverse controversies and confusions in the studies of information are resulted from different understandings of the concept of information. This fact clearly indicates that the real root, which leads to the diversity of approaches, is due to the “divide and conquer” methodology. We suggest here a novel understanding of the concept of information. At first, a group of popular definitions of information are analyzed. Then, the system methodology is applied to the diversity of the definitions with the goal of unification. Based on this methodology, an ecological model for information is established and the systematic definitions of information are hence derived from this model.

Abstract:According to its wide and broad "vast disciplinary structure" that has already formed in the course of the development of information science in China under the crossing and fusing together of a variety of other relevant disciplines, this article tries to bring forth a new viewpoint regarding its disciplinary structure analysis and compre-hension; that is, the "three research paradigms" that contemporary Chinese information science has already presented can also produce and construct in itself a new kind of subject system. Then, based on this subject system, its disci-pline cluster system can be both set up and correspondingly come into being, which is further divided into three inte-gral parts: its core disciplinary field, supporting disciplinary field, and application disciplinary field. The core disciplinary field of contemporary Chinese information science comprises five essential elements, i.e., intelligence studies and information analysis, knowledge services, intelligence theory regarding the core content about a knowledge activation, decision theory oriented toward three cycle phases that are composed of the decision demand, knowledge activation, and bringing up the planning and strategy, and information competition theory for in-formation man. The supporting disciplinary field comprises nine indispensable ingredients, i.e., library and information science (LIS), philosophy of information, information technology oriented toward intelligence analysis technology and knowledge technology, soft science, cognitive/thinking science, intelligence science, communication studies, man-agement science oriented toward IRM/IM and KM, and service science. Finally, the application disciplinary field comprises such significant and vital applied branches as competitive intelligence, economic intelligence, business intelligence, government intelligence, social intelligence, scientific and technological intelligence, defense scientific and technological intelligence, military intelligence, and (public) secu-rity intelligence.

Abstract:AbstractInformation reflects the existence, basic characteristics, and movement states of matter in the world. In the information society, it is difficult for human activities to leave information for the wide application of information technologies and systems bring a broad significance. Having achievements in both theory and application, information theory can be divided into the information theory on change and the information theory on reflection on the basis of cognitive perspective. In this chapter, the objective information theory (OIT) will be introduced to the background and motivation. It starts from the information theory on change.
