Abstract:The Differential-Phase-Shift (DPS) and the Coherent-One-Way (COW) are among the most practical protocols for quantum cryptography, and are therefore the object of fast-paced experimental developments. The assessment of their security is also a challenge for theorists: the existing tools, that allow to prove security against the most general attacks, do not apply to these two protocols in any straightforward way. We present new upper bounds for their security in the limit of large distances ($d \gtrsim 50$km with typical values in optical fibers) by considering a large class of collective attacks, namely those in which the adversary attaches ancillary quantum systems to each pulse or to each pair of pulses. We introduce also two modified versions of the COW protocol, which may prove more robust than the original one.

Abstract:Coherence and entanglement are fundamental properties of quantum systems, promising to power the near future quantum computers, sensors and simulators. Yet, their experimental detection is challenging, usually requiring full reconstruction of the system state. We show that one can extract quantitative bounds to the relative entropy of coherence and the coherent information, coherence and entanglement quantifiers respectively, by a limited number of purity measurements. The scheme is readily implementable with current technology to verify quantum computations in large scale registers, without carrying out expensive state tomography.

Abstract:We investigate the definition of security for encryption scheme in quantum context. We systematically define the indistinguishability and semantic security for quantum public-key and private-key encryption schemes, and for computational security, physical security and information-theoretic security. Based on our definition, we present a necessary and sufficient condition that leads to information-theoretic indistinguishability for quantum encryption scheme. The equivalence between the indistinguishability and semantic security of quantum encryption scheme is also proved.

Abstract:A new quantum cryptography (quantum key distribution) scheme based on unambiguous measurements is presented, which is secure against any individual attack allowed by quantum physics. By carefully constructing the unambiguous measurements elements a higher efficiency than previous protocols is achieved. Furthermore, an equality for the probability of the participant's reliable measurement outcome and the polarization angle that he chooses when distinguishing between two non-orthogonal states is also derived in this paper.

Abstract:Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution protocol, whose security analysis does not rely on any assumption on the detection system, can immune the attacking against detectors. We give a first composable security analysis for continuous-variable measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution using squeezed states against general coherent attacks. The security analysis is derived based on the entanglement-based scheme considering finite size effect. A version of entropic uncertainty relation is exploited to give a lower bound on the conditional smooth min-entropy by trusting Alice's and Bob's devices. The simulation results indicate that, in the universal composable security framework, the protocol can tolerate 2.5 dB and 6.5 dB channel loss against coherent attacks with direct and reverse reconciliation, respectively.

Abstract:Quantum-mechanical devices have the potential to transform cryptography. Most research in this area has focused either on the information-theoretic advantages of quantum protocols or on the security of classical cryptographic schemes against quantum attacks. In this work, we initiate the study of another relevant topic: the encryption of quantum data in the computational setting. In this direction, we establish quantum versions of several fundamental classical results. First, we develop natural definitions for private-key and public-key encryption schemes for quantum data. We then define notions of semantic security and indistinguishability, and, in analogy with the classical work of Goldwasser and Micali, show that these notions are equivalent. Finally, we construct secure quantum encryption schemes from basic primitives. In particular, we show that quantum-secure one-way functions imply IND-CCA1-secure symmetric-key quantum encryption, and that quantum-secure trapdoor one-way permutations imply semantically-secure public-key quantum encryption.

Abstract:In the "counterfactual quantum cryptography" scheme [T.-G. Noh, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 230501 (2009)], two legitimate distant peers may share secret-key bits even when the information carriers do not travel in the quantum channel. The security of this protocol with an ideal single-photon source has been proved by Yin et al. [Z.-Q. Yin, H. W. Li, W. Chen, Z. F. Han, and G. C. Guo, Phys. Rev. A 82, 042335 (2010)]. In this paper, we prove the security of the counterfactual-quantum-cryptography scheme based on a commonly used weak-coherent-laser source by considering a general collective attack. The basic assumption of this proof is that the efficiency and dark-counting rate of a single-photon detector are consistent for any n-photon Fock states. Then through randomizing the phases of the encoding weak coherent states, Eve's ancilla will be transformed into a classical mixture. Finally, the lower bound of the secret-key-bit rate and a performance analysis for the practical implementation are both given.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics offers the possibility of unconditionally secure communication between multiple remote parties. Security proofs for such protocols typically rely on bounding the capacity of the quantum channel in use. In a similar manner, Cramér-Rao bounds in quantum metrology place limits on how much information can be extracted from a given quantum state about some unknown parameters of interest. In this work we establish a connection between these two areas. We first demonstrate a three-party sensing protocol, where the attainable precision is dependent on how many parties work together. This protocol is then mapped to a secure access protocol, where only by working together can the parties gain access to some high security asset. Finally, we map the same task to a communication protocol where we demonstrate that a higher mutual information can be achieved when the parties work collaboratively compared to any party working in isolation.

Abstract:Recently, Zou et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 042325 (2010)] pointed out that two arbitrated quantum signature (AQS) schemes are not secure, because an arbitrator cannot arbitrate the dispute between two users when a receiver repudiates the integrity of a signature. By using a public board, they try to propose two AQS schemes to solve the problem. This work shows that the same security problem may exist in their schemes and also a malicious party can reveal the other party's secret key without being detected by using the Trojan-horse attacks. Accordingly, two basic properties of a quantum signature, i.e. unforgeability and undeniability, may not be satisfied in their scheme.

A security framework for quantum key distribution implementations

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) can theoretically achieve the Holy Grail of cryptography, information-theoretic security against eavesdropping. However, in practice, discrepancies between the mathematical models assumed in security proofs and the actual functioning of the devices used in implementations prevent it from reaching this goal. Device-independent QKD is currently not a satisfactory solution to this problem, as its performance is extremely poor and most of its security proofs assume that the user devices leak absolutely no information to the outside. On the other hand, measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD can guarantee security with arbitrarily flawed receivers while achieving high performance, and the remaining challenge is ensuring its security in the presence of source imperfections. So far, all efforts in this regard have come at a price; some proofs are suitable only for particular source imperfections, while others severely compromise the system's performance, i.e., its communication speed and distance. Here, we overcome these crucial problems by presenting a security proof in the finite-key regime against coherent attacks that can incorporate general encoding imperfections and side channels while achieving much higher performances than previous approaches. Moreover, our proof requires minimal state characterization, which facilitates its application to real-life implementations.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of the relative entropy of coherence for a two-level system is systematically investigated in different regimes. We derive the exact expressions of relative entropy quantifying coherence for an exactly solving model consisting of single qubit interacting with independent structured reservoir, show explicitly that the weak measurement (WM) and quantum measurement reversal (QMR) operation indeed help for protecting the coherence. In addition, the freezing phenomenon of the coherence can be detected by using the optimal WM and QMR operation.

Abstract:In this work we study quantum position verification with continuous-variable quantum states. In contrast to existing discrete protocols, we present and analyze a protocol that utilizes coherent states and its properties. Compared to discrete-variable photonic states, coherent states offer practical advantages since they can be efficiently prepared and manipulated with current technology. We prove security of the protocol against any unentangled attackers via entropic uncertainty relations, showing that the adversary has more uncertainty than the honest prover about the correct response as long as the noise in the quantum channel is below a certain threshold. Additionally, we show that attackers who pre-share one continuous-variable EPR pair can break the protocol.

Abstract:Coherence is a fundamental resource in quantum information processing, which can be certified by a coherence witness. Due to the imperfection of measurement devices, a conventional coherence witness may lead to fallacious results. We show that the conventional witness could mistake an incoherent state as a state with coherence due to the inaccurate settings of measurement bases. In order to make the witness result reliable, we propose a measurement-device-independent coherence witness scheme without any assumptions on the measurement settings. We introduce the decoy-state method to significantly increase the capability of recognizing states with coherence. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the scheme in a time-bin encoding optical system.

Abstract:Recent advances in quantum technologies raise the urgent need of verifying the correct functionality of a quantum device. Certifying the correctness of a quantum device in a fully classical manner is an important research branch. In this paper, we present a measurement protocol that allows a classical verifier to interact with an efficient quantum prover to verify the computational basis or the XY-plane basis measurement on a quantum state. With the help of two adaptive hardcore bit properties of a noisy trapdoor claw-free family, the security of measurement protocol is proved, which is under quantum hardness of the learning with error. The security characterizes the distance between the output distribution of measurement protocol and the distribution obtained by measuring certain quantum states in the designated basis, with or without the presence of honest behavior of the prover. Moreover, exploiting the measurement protocol, we present two device-noise-independent verification protocols of graph states and a classical verification protocol of delegated quantum computing whose soundness is 0.5757.

Abstract:Quantum coherence characterizes the non-classical feature of a single party system with respect to a local basis. Based on a recently introduced resource framework, coherence can be regarded as a resource and be systematically manipulated and quantified. Operationally, coherence quantifies the intrinsic randomness of the outcome of the projective measurement in the system's computational basis. However, such a relation is only proven when randomness is characterized by the von Neumann entropy. In this work, we consider several recently proposed coherence measures and relate them to the general uncertainties of the projective measurement outcome conditioned on all the other systems. Our work thus provides a unified framework for redefining several coherence measures via general conditional entropies. Based on the relation, we numerically calculate the coherence measures via semi-definite programming. Furthermore, we discuss the operational meaning of the unified definition. Our result highlights the close relation between single partite coherence and bipartite quantum correlation.

Abstract:Quantum cryptography is a new way to distribute keys. which can detect any eavesdropping. Quantum cryptography using single particle or weak light pulse has been discussed in some early papers, but it is difficult to transmit such single particle or weak light pulse. We propose a scheme of quantum key distribution using coherent state \alpha\ and \alpha + Delta alpha\. We also discuss its feasibility and security and give an experimental realization of this scheme.

Abstract:Public-key cryptosystems for quantum messages are considered from two aspects: public-key encryption and public-key authentication. Firstly, we propose a general construction of quantum public-key encryption scheme, and then construct an information-theoretic secure instance. Then, we propose a quantum public-key authentication scheme, which can protect the integrity of quantum messages. This scheme can both encrypt and authenticate quantum messages. It is information-theoretic secure with regard to encryption, and the success probability of tampering decreases exponentially with the security parameter with regard to authentication. Compared with classical public-key cryptosystems, one private-key in our schemes corresponds to an exponential number of public-keys, and every quantum public-key used by the sender is an unknown quantum state to the sender.

Abstract:For cryptography protocols, security is its most core issue, and is the same for quantum cryptography protocols. Researchers can adopt many methods to prove that these protocols are secure, but there exists much difficulty. By using the method of formal verification and the technique of model checking, a fully automated probabilistic model checking tool - PRISM can be used to model these protocols and verify the security properties. Such a methodology can not only avoid the computational complexity of the traditional verification methods based on mathematics, but also improve efficiency and accelerate the verification process. The verification results show that the detection rate of eavesdropping is approximately close to 1 when sufficient photons are transmitted. The semi-quantum cryptography protocols is as secure as the full quantum protocols.
