Abstract:Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems(AS/RS)are widely used in warehouses and distribution centers everywhere around the world.Storage location assignment and interleave sequencing are two important decision-making problems in AS/RS management.Although these two problems are logically interrelated,most previous research has focused on just one problem at a time.Studying a single policy in isolation would be acceptable if it does not interact with other functions.However,doing so is apparently not the case in many real life situations.Maximum throughput of AS/RS system may only be obtained from an optimal combination of storage assignment and interleaving policy. This paper addresses location assignment and interleaving problems in AR/RS at the same time.An incoming unit load is assigned to a storage location according to its duration of stay(DOS).Storage/Retrieval(S/R)machines perform storages and retrievals in the dual command(DC)mode.DC mode means that an S/R machine picks up an item from an I/O station,travels to a location to store it,travels to another location to retrieve an item,and then returns to the I/O station to deliver it.The proposed method must provide not only storage locations but also storage/retrieval interleaving sequences of S/R machines.The objective is to minimize the average travel time of S/R machines to process storage or retrieval operations,therefore maximizing the operational efficiency of the AS/RS. An integrated programming model is provided to reach an optimal solution to location assignment and interleaving problems.However,finding the optimal assignment and sequence for this type of AS/RS is not computationally tractable.Therefore,a two-step directional connected graph based heuristics(GBH)is developed to solve the problem.In the first stage,the storage location is determined.In the second stage,the interleave sequence is modeled as an assignment problem and solved by Hungarian algorithm.A Tabu search algorithm is proposed to improve the solution for medium-and large-sized problems. Experimental tests are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed optimization algorithm based on various data settings.Experimental results show the effectiveness of the algorithm.It is observed that the GBH for DC mode can provide a significantly smaller average travel time than the heuristics for single command mode.As the problem size increases,the reduction in average travel time also increases.The computational results show that the TS algorithm is capable of producing improved solutions for large-sized problems,with an average improvement of 1.2%-6.44% over the heuristic solution.The reasonable CPU time(less time 15 minutes)for large-sized problems is an indicator for the efficiency of the Tabu search algorithm.
