Abstract:Short thin cylinders can be the basic part of mesoscopic actuators powered by laser tweezers. We demonstrate that micro size birefringent colloidal coins can be positioned translationally and orientationally in advance of the prediction of current theoretical modeling. Circularly polarized laser tweezers keep driving the rotation of the microdisk. Viscous flow between a hard wall and a microdisk excites the disk to an oscillation orbit. These disks can be fabricated via solidification of emulsion drops by tuning temperature or solvent concentration so that molecules in the drop assuming a smectic phase.
Nanomechanical Analog of a Laser: Amplification of Mechanical Oscillations by Stimulated Zeeman Transitions

Abstract:We propose a magnetomechanical device that exhibits many properties of a laser. The device is formed by a nanocantilever and dynamically polarized paramagnetic nuclei of a solid sample in a strong external magnetic field. The corresponding quantum oscillator and effective two-level systems are coupled by the magnetostatic dipole-dipole interaction between a permanent magnet on the cantilever tip and the magnetic moments of the spins, so that the entire system is effectively described by the Jaynes-Cummings model. We consider the possibility of observing transient and cw lasing in this system, and show how these processes can be used to improve the sensitivity of magnetic resonance force microscopy.

Abstract:Recently, the specific hybridization of DNA molecules has been used to construct self-assembled devices, such as the mechanical device to mimic cellular protein motors in nature. Here, we present a new light-powered DNA mechanical device based on the photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties and toehold-mediated strand displacement. This autonomous and controllable device is capable of moving toward either end of the track, simply by switching the wavelength of light irradiation, either UV (365 nm) or visible (>450 nm). This light-controlled strategy can easily solve one main technical challenge for stepwise walking devices: the selection of routes in multipath systems. The principle employed in this study, photoisomerization-induced toehold length switching, could be further useful in the design of other mechanical devices, with the ultimate goal of rivaling molecular motors for cargo transport and macroscopic movement.

Abstract:We have observed reversible light-induced mechanical switching for a single organic molecule bound to a metal surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to image the features of an individual azobenzene molecule on Au(111) before and after reversibly cycling its mechanical structure between trans and cis states using light. Azobenzene molecules were engineered to increase their surface photomechanical activity by attaching varying numbers of tert-butyl (TB) ligands ("legs") to the azobenzene phenyl rings. STM images show that increasing the number of TB legs "lifts" the azobenzene molecules from the substrate, thereby increasing molecular photomechanical activity by decreasing molecule-surface coupling.

Abstract:The photomechanical effects of crystals of halogen-substituted 9-anthracenecarbonitrile were investigated. The needle-like crystals of 10-fluoroanthracene-9-carbonitrile (FCNA) bend rapidly under irradiation with 365 nm, 410 nm light and even white light, and the bent crystal could almost recover to its original shape upon exposure to 254 nm light or heating. The reversible photo-induced mechanical behaviors originated from [4 + 4] cycloaddition and the reverse reaction. This type of photo-actuator, in response to light irradiation over a broad wave-length range from UV to the visible region, might have important applications in biomimetic systems, biomedicine, artificial muscles, and smart microrobotics. The rapid photo-induced mechanical movements of the crystals inspired us to fabricate a hybrid polymer film of polyvinylidene difluoride incorporated with the microcrystals of FCNA, which not only showed bending toward or away from the light source depending on the initial bending direction of the film, but also could lift small objects induced by remote light.

Abstract:Achieving light-driven motions in nonliquid environments presents formidable challenges, because microsized objects experience strong dry adhesion and intend to be stuck to contact surfaces with great tenacity. Here, in air and vacuum, we show rotary locomotion of a micrometer-sized metal plate with ~30 nm thickness, revolving around a microfiber. This motor is powered by pulsed light guided into the fiber as a coordinated consequence of an optically excited Lamb wave on the plate and favorable configuration of plate-fiber geometry. The motor, actuated by designed light pulses, crawls stepwise with subnanometer locomotion resolution. Furthermore, we can control the rotation velocity and step resolution by varying the repetition rate and pulse power, respectively. A light-actuated micromirror scanning with 0.001° resolution is then demonstrated on the basis of this motor. It offers unprecedented application potential for integrated micro-opto-electromechanical systems, outer-space all-optical precision mechanics and controls, and laser scanning for miniature lidar systems.

Abstract:Mechanical motion of photonic devices driven by optical forces provides a profound means of coupling between optical fields. The current focus of these optomechanical effects has been on cavity optomechanics systems in which co-localized optical and mechanical modes interact strongly to enable wave-mixing between photons and phonons and backaction cooling of mechanical modes. Alternatively, extended mechanical modes can also induce strong nonlocal effects on propagating optical fields or multiple localized optical modes at distances. Here, we demonstrate a novel multi-cavity optomechanical device: a "photon see-saw", in which torsional optomechanical motion can shuttle photons between two photonic crystal nanocavities. The resonance frequencies of the two cavities, one on each side of the see-saw, are modulated anti-symmetrically by the device's rotation. Pumping photons into one cavity excites optomechanical self-oscillation which strongly modulates the inter-cavity coupling and shuttles photons to the other empty cavity during every oscillation cycle in a well regulated fashion.

Abstract:Optical manipulation on microscale and nanoscale structures opens up new possibilities for assembly and control of microelectromechanical systems and nanoelectromechanical systems. Static optical force induces constant displacement while changing optical force stimulates vibration of a microcantilever/nanocantilever. The vibratory behavior of a single carbon nanocoil cantilever under optical actuation is investigated. A fitting formula to describe the laser-induced vibration characteristics is deduced based on a classical continuum model, by which the resonance frequency of the carbon nanocoil can be determined directly and accurately. This optically actuated vibration method could be widely used in stimulating quasi-1D micro/nanorod-like materials, and has potential applications in micro-/nano-opto-electromechanical systems.

Abstract:Stimuli‐responsive mechanical deformations widely occur in biological systems but the design of biomimetic shape‐changing materials, especially those based on noncovalent interactions, remains highly challenging. Here, hydrogen‐bonded supramolecular microfibers are reported, which can perform light‐driven spiral deformation by switching an intrinsic azobenzene unit without monomer dissociation. The key design feature rests on rationally spaced multiple hydrogen bonds, which inhibits the disassembly pathway upon irradiation, allowing partial photomechanical actuation of the azobenzene cores in the confined environment of the assemblies. The light‐controlled deformation process of the supramolecular microfibers can be switched in a fully reversible manner. This combination of confinement‐inhibited disassembly and photoswitching to induce assembly deformation and actuation along length scales supports a distinctive strategy to design supramolecular materials with photomechanical motion. Supramolecular helical microfibers formed by noncovalent self‐assembly can perform bending and spiralling motion upon light irradiation. The mechanical deformation is driven by the localized photoisomerization of the azobenzene cores and the subsequent amplification along the supramolecular backbone.

Abstract:A series of photomechanical fibers was fabricated with a thermal drawing method by using liquid-crystalline random copolymers containing azobenzene and biphenyl groups in side chain. After being post-cross-linked under mild conditions, these fibers showed photoinduced bending motion away from the light source even though homogeneous alignment of mesogens was observed along the drawing direction. This abnormal photoinduced deformation of the obtained fibers is far different from previously reported light-directed motions about liquid-crystalline fiber and film materials. The interesting photomechanical deformation can be ascribed to the surface volume expansion caused by photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties. Then the photoinduced bending behaviors of these fibers containing different azobenzene concentrations and cross-linking densities were systematically investigated, suggesting that the location of photoresponsive azobenzene played an important role in deciding their photomechanical behaviors. This provides one convenient way of controlling over the photoinduced bending direction through the location of light-active moieties in side chain or cross-linker. In addition, irradiation of visible light accelerated the recovery of bent fibers. These fibers possess quick response, large deformation, and good thermal stability, indicating their promising applications for smart devices and energy conversion devices.
Ultrafast Photomechanical Transduction Through Thermophoretic Implosion

Abstract:Since the historical experiments of Crookes, the direct manipulation of matter by light has been both a challenge and a source of scientific debate. Here we show that laser illumination allows to displace a vial of nanoparticle solution over centimetre-scale distances. Cantilever-based force measurements show that the movement is due to millisecond-long force spikes, which are synchronised with a sound emission. We observe that the nanoparticles undergo negative thermophoresis, and ultrafast imaging reveals that the force spikes are followed by the explosive growth of a bubble in the solution. We propose a mechanism accounting for the propulsion based on a thermophoretic instability of the nanoparticle cloud, analogous to the Jeans's instability that occurs in gravitational systems. Our experiments demonstrate a new type of laser propulsion and a remarkably violent actuation of soft matter, reminiscent of the strategy used by certain plants to propel their spores.

Abstract:Photo-response molecular-scale movement has been well developed in azobenzene photochromic molecules. However, material capable of converting this molecular-scale movement to macroscopic work remains a formidable challenge. Here, we describe an exquisite photomechanical effect observed in an azobenzene-Gd(III) MOF. The single crystal of this material displays complex motion including walking, rolling, self-rotating, swing, and finally popping, dependent on the exposed time under UV and the size of the crystals. Consequently, this functional material gives the direct and impressive evidence to support the potential of MOF material in photomechanical motion.

Abstract:A polymer that incorporates liquid-crystal components generates continuous mechanical waves when lit by ultraviolet light, with potential applications for energy harvesting and self-cleaning surfaces. See Letter p.632 Liquid-crystal networks are cross-linked polymers made from macromolecules that self-organize into liquid-crystal phases. They can be programmed to respond to stimuli such as heat, electric fields and light, converting these stimuli into mechanical work or macroscopic deformation. Here Dirk Broer and colleagues develop azobenzenes with rapid cis-to-trans thermal relaxation times and incorporate them into liquid-crystal networks to generate photoactive polymer films. The films deform upon irradiation, and this deformation results in part of the film being shaded from further irradiation. The rapid relaxation then sets up a feedback loop, yielding continuous oscillating wave motion throughout the film. The authors take advantage of this oscillatory motion to demonstrate rudimentary self-propelled locomotion and a self-cleaning surface.
Spectrotemporal Shaping of Itinerant Photons Via Distributed Nanomechanics

Abstract:Efficient phase manipulation of light is the cornerstone of many advanced photonic applications 1 – 4 . However, the pursuit of compact, broadband and deep phase control of light has been hindered by the finite nonlinearity of the optical materials available for integrated photonics 5 , 6 . Here, we propose a dynamically driven photonic structure for deep phase manipulation and coherent spectrotemporal control of light based on distributed nanomechanics. We experimentally demonstrate the quasi-phase-matched interaction between stationary mechanical vibration and itinerant optical fields, which is used to generate an on-chip modulated frequency comb over 1.15 THz (160 lines), corresponding to a phase modulation depth of over 21.6π. In addition, an optical time-lens effect induced by mechanical vibration is realized, leading to optical pulse compression of over 70-fold to obtain a minimum pulse duration of 1.02 ps. The high efficiency and versatility make such mechanically driven dynamic photonic structures ideal for realizing complex optical control schemes, such as lossless non-reciprocity 7 , frequency division optical communication 1 and optical frequency comb division 8 .

Abstract:We report the design of a single-molecule nanomotor driven by photons. The nanomotor is a DNA hairpin-structured molecule incorporated with azobenzene moieties to facilitate reversible photocontrollable switching. Upon repeated UV-vis irradiation, this nanomotor displayed 40-50% open-close conversion efficiency. This type of nanomotor displays well-regulated responses and can be operated under mild conditions with no output of waste. In contrast to multiple-component DNA nanomachines, the intramolecular interaction in this single-molecule system offers unique concentration-independent motor functionality. Moreover, the hairpin structure of the motor backbone can significantly improve the efficiency of light-to-movement energy conversion. These results suggest that azobenzene-incorporated, hairpin-structured single-molecule DNA nanomotors have promising potential for applications which require highly efficient light-driven molecular motors.

Abstract:Achieving light-induced manipulation of controlled self-assembly in nanosized structures is essential for developing artificially dynamic smart materials. Herein, we demonstrate an approach using a non-photoresponsive hydrogen-bonded (H-bonded) macrocycle to control the self-assembly and disassembly of nanostructures in response to light. The present system comprises a photoacid (merocyanine, 1-MEH), a pseudorotaxane formed by two H-bonded macrocycles, dipyridinyl acetylene, and zinc ions. The operation of such a system is examined according to the alternation of self-assembly through proton transfer, which is mediated by the photoacid upon exposure to visible light. The host–guest complexation between the macrocycle and bipyridium guests was investigated by NMR spectroscopy, and one of the guests with the highest affinity for the ring was selected for use as one of the components of the system, which forms the host–guest complex with the ring in a 2:1 stoichiometry. In solution, a dipyridine and the ring, having no interaction with each other, rapidly form a complex in the presence of 1-MEH when exposed to light and thermally relax back to the free ring without entrapped guests after 4 h. Furthermore, the addition of zinc ions to the solution above leads to the formation of a polypseudorotaxane with its morphology responsive to photoirradiation. This work exemplifies the light-controlled alteration of self-assembly in non-photoresponsive systems based on interactions between the guest and the H-bonded macrocycle in the presence of a photoacid.

A picogram and nanometer scale photonic crystal opto-mechanical cavity

Abstract:We describe the design, fabrication, and measurement of a cavity opto-mechanical system consisting of two nanobeams of silicon nitride in the near-field of each other, forming a so-called "zipper" cavity. A photonic crystal patterning is applied to the nanobeams to localize optical and mechanical energy to the same cubic-micron-scale volume. The picrogram-scale mass of the structure, along with the strong per-photon optical gradient force, results in a giant optical spring effect. In addition, a novel damping regime is explored in which the small heat capacity of the zipper cavity results in blue-detuned opto-mechanical damping.

Abstract:Abstract The illumination of azobenzene molecules with UV/visible light efficiently converts the molecules between trans and cis isomerization states. Isomerization is accompanied by a large photo-induced molecular motion, which is able to significantly affect the physical and chemical properties of the materials in which they are incorporated. In some material systems, the nanoscopic structural movement of the isomerizing azobenzene molecules can be even propagated at macroscopic spatial scales. Reversible large-scale superficial photo-patterning and mechanical photo-actuation are efficiently achieved in azobenzene-containing glassy materials and liquid crystalline elastomers, respectively. This review covers several aspects related to the phenomenology and the applications of the light-driven macroscopic effects observed in these two classes of azomaterials, highlighting many of the possibilities they offer in different fields of science, like photonics, biology, surface engineering and robotics.

Giant optomechanical spring effect in plasmonic nano- and picocavities probed by surface-enhanced Raman scattering

Abstract:Molecular vibrations couple to visible light only weakly, have small mutual interactions, and hence are often ignored for non-linear optics. Here we show the extreme confinement provided by plasmonic nano- and pico-cavities can sufficiently enhance optomechanical coupling so that intense laser illumination drastically softens the molecular bonds. This optomechanical pumping regime produces strong distortions of the Raman vibrational spectrum related to giant vibrational frequency shifts from an optical spring effect which is hundred-fold larger than in traditional cavities. The theoretical simulations accounting for the multimodal nanocavity response and near-field-induced collective phonon interactions are consistent with the experimentally-observed non-linear behavior exhibited in the Raman spectra of nanoparticle-on-mirror constructs illuminated by ultrafast laser pulses. Further, we show indications that plasmonic picocavities allow us to access the optical spring effect in single molecules with continuous illumination. Driving the collective phonon in the nanocavity paves the way to control reversible bond softening, as well as irreversible chemistry.

Abstract:Nanomechanical photonic metamaterials provide a wealth of active switching, nonlinear and enhanced light-matter interaction functionalities by coupling optically and mechanically resonant subsystems. Thermal (Brownian) motion of the nanostructural components of such metamaterials leads to fluctuations in optical properties, which may manifest as noise, but which also present opportunity to characterize performance and thereby optimize design at the level of individual nanomechanical elements. We show that Brownian motion in an all-dielectric metamaterial ensemble of silicon-on-silicon-nitride nanowires can be controlled by light at sub-{\mu}W/{\mu}m2 intensities. Induced changes in nanowire temperature of just a few Kelvin, dependent upon nanowire dimensions, material composition, and the direction of light propagation, yield proportional changes of several percent in the few-MHz Eigenfrequencies and picometric displacement amplitudes of Brownian motion. The tuning mechanism can provide active control of frequency response in photonic metadevices and may serve as a basis for bolometric, mass and micro/nanostructural stress sensing.
