Abstract:The Monte Carlo - Library Least-Squares (MCLLS) approach has been used for the in vivo X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurement of lead in bone in order to improve accuracy since there is a very low signal-to-background ratio in this case. The unique features of this approach are that it utilizes the complete spectral information (including characteristic X rays and scatter response) rather than just the peak information, automatically handles the matrix effects and any overlapping peaks, and combines spectrum evaluation with quantitative analysis. Compared to the conventional peak area method, the MCLLS approach improved the lead XRF measurement accuracy by reducing the relative standard deviation by a factor of from 3 to 20 for a prototype ro9Cd- based KXRF system and from 1.4 to 3 for a polarized X-ray tube beam-based LXRF system.
