Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting has been extensively studied in the past decades and numerous semiconductors have been proved to be effective photocatalysts. Among them, layered perovskites, which comprise of a large family of layered oxides with different chemical components, are promising materials because of their stable perovskite slabs consisting of multiple metal cations and flexible interlayer galleries that facilitate modification. In this paper, we systematically review a series of modified layered perovskites with enhanced performance of water splitting. A variety of methods have been extensively applied in the modification of layered perovskites. And derivate photocatalysts with higher activity, better stability and lower cost were obtained. For bulk layered perovskites, this article introduces those that have been modified via photocatalyst design(ion doping and pillaring)as well as synthesis procedure and cocatalyst loading improvement. They show optimized chemical composition, crystal structure, specific area, band energy and morphology, which have been extensively proved to be key factors that decide the performance of photocatalysts. Compared with bulk layered perovskites, layered perovskite nanosheets, normally prepared by exfoliation of corresponding bulk parent materials, show largely increased surface area, which is beneficial for charge transfer. Further modification using these nanosheets as building blocks to construct restacked layered photocatalysts with mono-component or multi-components fully utilizes their ultrathin and charged nature. The modified nanosheets display enhanced charge separation and light absorption due to designed band structure and micro-nano structure, offering a promising future direction of photocatalyst design.

Abstract:The mechanism of water decomposition with solar energy for semiconductors was described.The structure and preparing methods of the new photocatalyst K4Nb6O17 were introduced.The modified methods of K4Nb6O17,such as metal-loaded,ion-doped,compound-intercalated and so on,were summarized,and the prospects of K4Nb6O17 in the photocatalytic field were also previewed.

Abstract:Traditional photocatalysts are difficile to conform the provision of visible light catalysis, conducive recycling and eminent efficiency, which limits their practical applications for decomposing organic pollutants in wastewater. Herein, a multi-layered porous hierarchical titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride (TiO2/g-C3N4) hybrid coating is in-situ generated on titanium (Ti) substrate by sequentially employing plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), alkali immersing and hydrothermal reaction. The as-prepared coating exhibits surpassing photocatalytic performance to decay Rhodamine B (RhB) than g-C3N4 and TiO2 photocatalysts under 5 W LED visible light with 240 h cyclic stability. Moreover, the electrons transport and Z-scheme mechanism for TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction is pursued to account for the ultralow recombination of photo-induced electron-hole and the enhanced catalytic properties. Not only that, it inhibits the secondary pollution which has further intensified its significance for degradation of organic pollution in sewage treatment systems.

Abstract:The increasing pollution and human demand for a cleaner environment have made achieving the environmental sustainability a current research focus. As a “green” technology, semiconductor photocatalysis is of great significance to the environmental purification. Benefiting from the unique anisotropic crystal structure and electronic properties, layered photocatalytic nanomaterials show great potential for efficient photocatalytic environmental treatment. This review comprehensively summarizes the recent progress on layered photocatalytic nanomaterials for oxidation or reduction of pollutants in water and air along with the basic understanding of related mechanisms and developments in this field. First, the existing diversified layered photocatalysts are classified, and their different synthesis and modification strategies are discussed in detail to provide a comprehensive view of the material design that affects their photocatalytic performance. Subsequently, the extensive applications of the above-mentioned layered photocatalytic nanomaterials in environmental fields are systematically summarized, including photooxidation of water and air pollutants, and photoreduction of heavy metal pollutants, NO3−, BrO3− and CO2. Finally, based on the current research achievements in layered photocatalysts for environmental remediation, the future development direction and challenges are proposed.

Abstract:The key challenge of the photocatalytic technology is to discover a low-cost photocatalyst with the functions of efficient sunlight utilization and high charge separation rate for application in the field of renewable energy generation. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has spurred worldwide attention due to its abundance of raw materials, superior visible-light response activity, facile synthetic strategy, chemical stability, and a unique layered structure. In the past decade, the combination of g-C3N4 and organic compounds became a research hotspot because of its low cost, adjustable solar light absorption band and stable crystal structures. In this review, (1) the latest developments in the morphology control of g-C3N4 as a photocatalyst including nanorods, nanotubes, nanosheets, nanospheres, porous structures and other different tunable nanostructures, are systematically studied. (2) The incorporation strategies of g-C3N4 with various organic compounds including recently reported organic molecules, polymers and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the aim of improving the overall photocatalytic performance are discussed in detail. (3) We theoretically present applications in water splitting, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation and environmental disinfection. Finally, the research challenges and prospects of organic compound composited g-C3N4 towards hydrogen evolution through water splitting are proposed.
A H2O2 Oxidation Approach to Ti3C2/TiO2 for Efficient Photocatalytic Removal of Distinct Organic Pollutants in Water.

Abstract:To develop versatile photocatalysts for efficient degradation of distinct organic pollutants in water is a continuous pursuit in environment remediation. Herein, we directly oxidize Ti3C2 MXene with hydrogen peroxide to produce C-doped anatase TiO2 nanowires with aggregates maintaining a layered architecture of the MXene. The Ti3C2 MXene provides a titanium source for TiO2, a carbon source for in situ C-doping, and templates for nanowire aggregates. Under UV light illumination, the optimized Ti3C2/TiO2 exhibits a reaction rate constant 1.5 times that of the benchmark P25 TiO2 nanoparticles, toward photocatalytic degradations of trace phenol in water. The mechanism study suggests that photogenerated holes play key roles on the phenol degradation, either directly oxidizing phenol molecules or in an indirect way through oxidizing first the surface hydroxyl groups. The unreacted Ti3C2 MXene, although with trace amounts, is supposed to facilitate electron transfer, which inhibits charge recombination. The unique nanostructure of layered aggregates of nanowires, abundant surface oxygen vacancies arising from the carbon doping, and probably the Ti3C2/TiO2 heterojunction guarantee the high photocatalytic efficiency toward removals of organic pollutants in water. The photocatalyst also exhibits an activity superior to, or at least comparable to, the benchmark P25 TiO2 toward photodegradations for typical persistent organic pollutants of phenol, dye molecule of rhodamine B, antibiotic of tetracycline, pharmaceutical wastewater of ofloxacin, and pesticide of N,N-dimethylformamide, when evaluated in total organic carbon removal.

Abstract:Layered composite materials formed by the transition metal oxides, including the niobates, titanates, titanoniobates, and tantalates, have been studied as a kind of new photocatalytic materials because of their unique structures and properties. Their photocatalytic performance could be modified by adjusting the laminate composition, selecting appropriate phase structure, exchanging interlayer cations or intercalated-pillaring, exfoliated-assembling, etc. The purpose of this present paper is to review the main factors affecting photocatalytic performance of the layered composite transition metal oxides and to provide reference for further construction of new photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:An enormous research effort is currently being directed towards the development of efficient visible‐light‐driven photocatalysts for renewable energy applications including water splitting, CO2 reduction and alcohol photoreforming. Layered double hydroxide (LDH)‐based photocatalysts have emerged as one of the most promising candidates to replace TiO2‐based photocatalysts for these reactions, owing to their unique layered structure, compositional flexibility, controllable particle size, low manufacturing cost and ease of synthesis. By introducing defects into LDH materials through the control of their size to the nanoscale, the atomic structure, surface defect concentration, and electronic and optical characteristics of LDH materials can be strategically engineered for particular applications. Furthermore, through the use of advanced characterization techniques such as X‐ray absorption fine structure, positron annihilation spectrometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance, density‐functional theory calculations, and photocatalytic tests, structure‐activity relationships can be established and used in the rational design of high‐performance LDH‐based photocatalysts for efficient solar energy capture. LDHs thus represent a versatile platform for semiconductor photocatalyst development with application potential across the energy sector. Nanostructured layered double hydroxide (LDH) photocatalysts, owing to their unique layered structure, compositional flexibility, low cost and ease‐of‐synthesis represent one of the hottest new research directions in semiconductor photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. Structure‐activity relationships in nanostructured LDH compounds are explored, and the importance of using advanced characterization techniques in the future development of more efficient LDH‐based photocatalysts is emphasized.

Abstract:In pursuit of advancing photocatalysts for superior performance in water treatment and clean energy generation, researchers are increasingly focusing on layered double hydroxides (LDHs) which have garnered significant attention due to their customizable properties, morphologies, distinctive 2D layered structure and flexible options for modifying anions and cations. No review has previously delved specifically into ZnCr and NiCr LDH-based photocatalysts and therefore, this review highlights the recent surge in ZnCr and NiCr-based LDHs as potential photocatalysts for their applications in water purification and renewable energy generation. The structural and fundamental characteristics of layered double hydroxides and especially ZnCr-LDHs and NiCr-LDHs are outlined. Further, the various synthesis techniques for the preparation of ZnCr-LDHs, NiCr-LDHs and their composite and heterostructure materials have been briefly discussed. The applicability of ZnCr-LDH and NiCr-LDH based photocatalysts in tackling significant issues in water treatment and sustainable energy generation is the main emphasis of this review. It focuses on photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater, elucidating the principles and advancements for enhancing the efficiency of these materials. It also explores their role in H2 production through water splitting, conversion of CO2 into valuable fuels and NH3 synthesis from N2, shedding light on their potential for clean energy solutions. The insights presented herein offer valuable guidance for researchers working towards sustainable solutions for environmental remediation and renewable energy generation.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction in presence of H2O provides an ideal way to alleviate the greenhouse effect and obtain valuable chemicals. Constructing active sites on the surface of photocatalysts significantly affects the activity and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, which involves a multi-electron reduction process. Herein, we anchor Ag and Pd particles on the surface of layered perovskite SrBi2Ta2O9 to build CO and CH4 evolution sites, respectively, via a photodeposition method. Ag and Pd not only attract and accumulate the photoinduced electrons originating from SrBi2Ta2O9 due to the formed Schottky junction between them, but also activate CO2 molecules, thereby resulting in higher CO2 reduction activity. On the surface of Ag, intermediate species CO* desorb and form CO directly, whereas, on the surface of Pd, intermediate species CO* is further hydrogenated to form CH4, thus resulting in different selectivity. This work offers a new avenue for developing photocatalysts with high activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives are a family of promising photocatalysts that have been widely used in photodegradation of organic pollutants. We review the most recent advances in visible-light driven photodegradation of organic pollutants using LDHs based materials with emphasis on the manipulation of their morphological, compositional, and electronic properties and the mechanistic understandings of the photocatalytic processes. Based on the characteristic structures of LDHs, i.e., stable layered structure, specific “memory effect”, switchable property of layered composites and high surface area, we overview the performance and mechanism of LDHs based catalysts for the photodegradation of common and persistent organic pollutants. First, LDHs-based photocatalysts were classified into five categories, LDHs-derived mixed metal oxides, supporting LDHs, intercalated LDHs, modified LDHs, and LDHs with unique structures (e.g., core-shell LDHs), and reviewed individually in terms of their synthetic methodologies, and structural, atomistic topological and electronic properties. Second, for mechanistic understandings of the photocatalytic processes, we summarize major factors that govern the performance of LDHs-based photocatalysts, including catalytically-relevant properties at the metal/LDHs heterojunctions, adsorption effect, acid-base pairs and the presence of vacancy sites. Third, depending on the photodegradation reactions, the targeting organic pollutants were classified into four types, azo dyes, phenols, persistent organic pollutants and other types of organic pollutants; LDHs-based photocatalysts with optimized performance for each type of molecule are summarized with mechanistic understandings. In addition, we review recent trend in the application of LDHs-based materials in new-emerging areas including CO2 reduction, hydrolysis to produce hydrogen, and photo-assisted organic synthesis with promising performances. Mechanistic details of the photocatalytic processes that lead to the different outcomes in terms of the efficiency, reaction routes and practically-relevant applications in energy harvesting and removal of organic pollutants are the primary focus of the present review. Outlook of major future directions in LDHs-based photocatalysis is outlined by the end.

Abstract:We study the surface stability of the layered bismuth-oxide Bi$_2$WO$_6$ and Bi$_2$MoO$_6$ photocatalysts, which belong to the series of Aurivillius (Bi$_2$A$_{n-1}$B$_{n}$O$_{3n+3}$) perovskites and have been proposed as efficient visible-light absorbers, due to favorable electronic hybridization induced by the Bi 6s and 6p orbitals. We present a Newton--Raphson optimization of the charge distribution at the semiconductor--solution interface using the self-consistent continuum solvation (SCCS) model to describe the influence of the aqueous environment. Our analysis provides a description of the charged interface under controlled pH and applied voltage, and offers a molecular interpretation of the competing structural and electrical factors that underlie the facet-dependent photocatalytic activity of layered Bi$_2$A$_{n-1}$B$_{n}$O$_{3n+3}$ compounds.

Abstract:In this paper, MOF-In2S3 were modified by ZnFe-layered dioxides (LDO) with strong stability to obtain high catalytic performance composite. The successful preparation of ZnFe-LDO/MOF-In2S3 not only retains the advantages of large specific surface area of MOF-In2S3 and the stability of ZnFe-LDO, but also improves its charge separation efficiency and the light absorption region through the construction of heterojunctions. As expected, the experimental results show that ZnFe-LDO/MOF-In2S3 has superior photo-electrocatalytic properties. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of ZnFe-LDO/MOF-In2S3 for TCH and OTC reach 92.92% and 80%, respectively, within 25 min. And the corresponding degradation rate constants are up to 1.41332 and 0.45451 L center dot mg(-1)center dot min(-1), respectively, which are accord with the pseudo-second-order kinetic constants. The intermediate of 0.6LDO/M-I degradation of TCH was proposed by liquid mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Notably, a special transient surface photovoltage (TPV) technique was used for discussing the charge transfer kinetics and the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. Based on Mott-Schottky (M-S), Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum (UV), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) results, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results, and active substance capture experiment results, a Z-scheme heterojunction system was proposed. The above research work proposed a new approach to enhance the stability of catalytic materials by using the aid of layered dioxides. In addition, the characterization of surface photovoltage provides a new way to study charge transfer.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis has received considerable interdisciplinary attentions and research interests owing to its versatile applications. Layered bismuth-based (LBB) materials, featured by layered structure built by [Bi2O2]2+ slices and interleaved anions or/and anionic groups, show huge potentials in solar energy catalytic conversion due to their unique crystal structure, diverse composition, rich atomic coordination and favorable hybrid electronic band structure. In this review, we provide a comprehensive, systematic and timely summary on the LBB-based materials applied in photocatalysis, which start with the classification, characteristics, and synthesis. Subsequently, LBB photocatalysts are classified into Sillenstructured, Aurivillius-structured, Sillen-Aurivillius-structured and Sillen/Aurivillius-related structured photocatalysts based on the interleaved unit types, and all kinds of strategies for improving their photo catalytic performance are presented in details, including microstructure regulation (morphology control and facet engineering), crystal structure regulation (elements doping, crystal vacancy creation, layered structure regulation and polar enhancement) and heterojunction construction (semiconductor/LBB heterojunctions, carbon/LBB composites, polymer/LBB composites and multicomponent heterojunctions). Comprehensive photocatalytic applications of LBB materials, including pollutants purification, bacterial disinfection, water splitting, CO2 reduction, N2 reduction, H2O2 production/decomposition, selective organic synthesis, photoelectrocatalysis, as well as photocatalysis-assisted piezocatalysis and electrochemical energy storage are introduced in the respective type. Finally, concluding perspectives and outlook towards the future development of LBB photocatalysts are provided. This review is expected to furnish a sweeping guideline for the in-depth understanding and rational design of LBB photocatalysts, and inspire new concepts and advancements in other booming fields for energy and environmental applications.(C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. A Novel Layered Bismuth-Based Photocatalytic Material LiBi3O4Cl2 with OH and H+ As the Active Species for Efficient Photodegradation Applications

Abstract:Developing new photocatalysts is of significant importance for their potential environmental and energetic applications. Herein, a novel layered bismuth-based photocatalytic material LiBi3O4Cl2 was developed by a simple solid-state reaction. The morphology, microstructures and optical properties were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM and DRS. The band gap of LiBi3O4Cl2 has been determined to be 3.35 eV, and its ECB and EVB were also estimated. The photocatalytic property of LiBi3O4Cl2 is surveyed by oxidative decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and phenol in aqueous solution. The results demonstrated that LiBi3O4Cl2 is an efficient UV light active photocatalyst, which can destroy the contaminants with irradiation. It is also more effective in degrading pollutants than the related layered bismuth-based photocatalyst Bi4NbO8Br. The photocatalysis mechanism is detailedly investigated by active species trapping measurement and terephthalic acid photoluminescence probing technique (TA-PL). It revealed that powerful hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) and photogenerated holes (h(+)) are the two main active species and are responsible for the efficient degradation process. This study provides a new layered bismuth-based photocatalytic material for environmental and energetic applications. (C) 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.
Interlocked 3D active carbon fibers and monolithic I-doped Bi2O2CO3 structure built by 2D face-to-face interaction: endowed with cycling stability and photocatalytic activity

Abstract:Photocatalysis is considered a remarkable green method in the catalytic degradation of wastewater; however, the collection and loading of the powdered catalyst is still a problem. The traditional coating methods are usually unstable for the (photo-)degradation of organic binders. Herein, monolithic structures based on 2D-2D interactions instead of traditional 0D-0D and 1D-1D interactions were designed and constructed, realizing an interlocked structure with 3D active carbon fiber networks via the self-assembly of Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets (B-ACF) during the hydrothermal process. The loaded catalyst was further modified via an I-doping improvement strategy (4B-ACF-I), which exhibited 8 times the catalytic activity as compared to the intrinsic Bi2O2CO3. Thanks to the 3D monolithic and interlocked structure of loaded catalysts, B-ACF-I photocatalysts could be reused without any loss of catalytic activity during the cycling stability test. The expanded experiment and the removal of Cr(vi) under visible light prove that our improvement strategy can be considered even in actual wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has been regarded as one of the most potential photocatalysts for degradation of the pollutants, due to the tunable elements in the laminates, high surface area and exposed active sites. Developing a photocatalyst with a visible light activity and fast charge separation efficiency is a main research focus. In this work, a central-collapsed CoFeAl-LDHs was formed via the selective etching Al3+ in the laminates, which relied on the function of OH- produced by urea hydrolysis. The Central-collapsed structure of CoFeAl-LDHs exhibited enhanced adsorption activity and photocatalytic efficiency. The results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model are suitable for adsorption behavior. This etching cavity is beneficial to the adsorption of MB and provides a better platform for the direct interaction between MB and CoFeAl-LDHs. The morphology and photoelectrochemical properties of the Central-collapsed structure of LDHs were characterized and used to explore the relationship between the etching degree and photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic properties of all the samples under visible light irradiation were evaluated, and LDH-6 has the best photocatalytic activity. This work provides a novel approach for the fabrication of central-collapsed structure of layered double hydroxides photocatalysts to meet environmental and energy requirements.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has the advantages of practical, sustainable and environmental protection, so it plays a significant role in energy transformation and environmental utilization. CeO2 has attracted widespread attention for its unique 4 f electrons, rich defect structures, high oxygen storage capacity and great chemical stability. In this paper, we review the structure of CeO2 and the common methods for the preparation of CeO2-based composites in the first part. In particular, we highlight the co-precipitation method, template method, and sol-gel method methods. Then, in the second part, we introduce the application of CeO2-based composites in photocatalysis, including photocatalytic CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, degradation, selective organic reaction, and photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. In addition, we discuss several modification techniques to improve the photocatalytic performance of CeO2-based composites, such as elemental doping, defect engineering, constructing heterojunction and morphology regulation. Finally, the challenges faced by CeO2-based composites are analyzed and their development prospects are prospected. This review provides a systematic summary of the recent advance of CeO2-based composites in the field of photocatalysis, which can provide useful references for the rational design of efficient CeO2-based composite photocatalysts for sustainable development.
