Abstract:In the process of discussing Han-Liu's theory of ancient prose,relevant scholars have always concentrated upon "Prose throws light on truth(the Tao)",whereas they have tended to take an isolated view of such sayings as "Forceful writings include proper words","Injustice provokes outcry",and "One writes for fun just as one plays games".This paper points out that Han-Liu's theory of ancient prose includes a structure of one as the principal and three as the subordinate: "Prose throws light on truth" is the principal thing,while the other three sayings are subordinate.Owing to the existence of the norm,Han-Liu's vigorous writings,injustice and amusement will not lose their correct direction.On the other hand,combined with the other three,Han-Liu's Tao can translate Confucian Tao into literary Tao,thus turning Tao into literature.This coordinating structure not only renders Han and Liu distinct from ordinary Confucian scholars in literary norms,but also makes it possible that their essays possess both social and individual features,that they brim with both ideas and feelings,and that they show both realistic functions and aesthetic delight.In this way,they created such brilliant ancient prose as hitherto unkown,thus accomplishing the historical mission of getting ancient prose popular again.
