Abstract:Recently reported light-scattering studies of CaKNO3 and Salol are reanalyzed, using the extended version of the mode-coupling theory of the liquid-glass transition including activated transport or hopping effects. Problems found in the original fits due to the neglect of hopping terms are largely corrected, and quantitative predictions for the susceptibility minimum below the crossover temperature T(c) are found. The results are also shown to accurately explain the CaKNO3 neutron spin-echo data reported by Mezei [J. Non-Cryst. Solids 131-133, 317 (1991)].

Abstract:The structural relaxations of a dense, binary mixture of charged hard spheres are studied using the Mode Coupling Theory (MCT). Qualitative differences to non--ionic systems are shown to result from the long--range Coulomb interaction and charge ordering in dense molten salts. The presented non--equilibrium results are determined by the equilibrium structure, which is input using the well studied Mean Spherical Approximation.

Abstract:Depolarized light-scattering measurements have revealed the dynamics of CaKNO3 and salol near their liquid-glass transition temperatures in the frequency range of ∼ 0.2 GHz to ∼ 4 THz. The two-step relaxation process predicted by the mode coupling theory was observed in the supercooled liquid near Tc. Idealized mode coupling theory analysis for the β-relaxation region provided reasonable agreement with the scaling predictions. The crossover temperature was identified from both above and below Tc. However, systematic differences between the experimental data and the idealized theoretical β-spectra were observed at low frequencies for temperatures near and below Tc. An extended mode coupling theory analysis, which includes the phonon-assisted hopping transport, provided a good description of the complete experimental β-spectra. The hopping rate was quantitatively estimated from the analysis. Transition regions and trajectories were found in the temperature-hopping rate plane.

Abstract:Light-scattering studies of the liquid-glass transition of ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.4}$${\mathrm{K}}_{0.6}$(${\mathrm{NO}}_{3}$${)}_{1.4}$ have been carried out from 305 to 23\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C. Composite spectra covering over four decades in frequency were obtained by combining data obtained with a Sandercock tandem Fabry-P\'erot interferometer and Raman spectra. Two-step relaxation processes were observed in the supercooled liquid near the glass transition. The \ensuremath{\alpha} relaxation exhibits a temperature-independent stretching for T>${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ with ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$\ensuremath{\approxeq}105 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C, which is about 45\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C above the glass transition temperature. The \ensuremath{\beta}-relaxation frequency scale indicates critical slowing down when the temperature approaches ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{c}}$ from either above or below. Scaling analyses for both \ensuremath{\alpha} and \ensuremath{\beta} relaxations provide good agreement with the predictions of mode-coupling theory.

Abstract:The ion transfer number is introduced in the formula describing the relationship between ionic limiting molar conductivity and ionic concentration based on mode coupling theory(MCT). A series of calculated for the ionic limiting molar conductivity are present. The ionic limiting molar conductivities of seven lithium salts in two single organic solvents and two mixed solvents are calculated. The results are in good agreement with the literature′s results which are calculated either from transport number obtained by empirical formula or from transport number obtained by electrochemiscal experiments.

Abstract:In this study, coupled heat transfer analysis of molten salt with variation of thermophysical properties was made. Radiative transfer and energy equations were solved by FEM using the codes compiled by the authors, while the mass and momentum conservation equations were solved by Fluent software. Thereafter, the temperature distribution of the molten salt flowing in a tube receiver with/without considering radiative transfer was presented. The effects of scattering albedo, refractive index, and convective heat-transfer coefficient on the temperature distribution of the molten salt were investigated. The numerical results showed that the maximum deviations in the elevated temperature of the molten salt at the cross section x = 0.5 and fluid outlet surface are 39.8% and 50.7%, respectively, when the radiative heat transfer is neglected.

Abstract:We use extensive molecular dynamics simulations to calculate thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity in two common molten salts, LiF and KCl. Our analysis includes the total thermal conductivity and intrinsic conductivity involving mass currents measured experimentally. The latter shows good agreement with the experimental data. We also calculate their key thermodynamic properties such as constant-pressure and constant-volume specific heats. We subsequently compare the results to the lower bound for thermal diffusivity expressed in terms of fundamental physical constants. Using this comparison and recent theoretical insights into thermodynamic and transport properties in liquids, we interpret thermal properties on the basis of atomistic dynamics and phonon excitations. We finally find that thermal diffusivity of molten salts is close to their kinematic viscosity.

Abstract:Molten salt mixtures are integral part of highly important technological applications such as nuclear reactors. However, due to inherent difficulties associated with experiment at high temperatures and the intrinsic complexity of liquid-phase multi-component systems, understanding their properties at a molecular level remains a challenge. Here, we report on an ab initio molecular dynamics investigation on structural, electronic, transport, and thermal properties of two common molten salt mixtures, (K, Li)Cl and (K,Na)Cl, at five different compositions and three temperatures. Most of the properties were found to depend on both composition and temperature. While properties, like atomic charges, show additive behaviors, other properties, such as electrical conductivity, show considerable deviations from additivity. We shall show that the mixing of the molten salt mixtures is mainly driven by entropy, and that the KCl and LiCl mix better than KCl and NaCl. Our computational results are in general consistent with available experimental data. Comparison with available theoretical data is also provided.

Abstract:A self-consistent mode coupling theory (MCT) with microscopic inputs of equilibrium pair correlation functions is developed to analyze electrolyte dynamics. We apply the theory to calculate concentration dependence of (i) time dependent ion diffusion, (ii) dynamic structure factor of the constituent ions, and (iii) ion solvation dynamics in electrolyte solution. Brownian dynamics (BD) with implicit water molecules and molecular dynamics (MD) method with explicit water are used to check the theoretical predictions. The time dependence of ionic self-diffusion coefficient and the corresponding dynamic structure factor evaluated from our MCT approach show quantitative agreement with early experimental and present Brownian dynamic simulation results. With increasing concentration, the dispersion of electrolyte friction is found to occur at increasingly higher frequency, due to the faster relaxation of the ion atmosphere. The wave number dependence of total dynamic structure factor F(k,t), exhibits markedly different relaxation dynamics at different length scales. At small wave numbers, we find the emergence of a step-like relaxation, indicating the presence of both fast and slow time scales in the system. Such behaviour allows an intriguing analogy with temperature dependent relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids. We find that solvation dynamics of a tagged ion exhibits a power law decay at long times- the decay can also be fitted to a stretched exponential form. The emergence of the power law in solvation dynamics has been tested by carrying out long Brownian dynamics simulations with varying ionic concentrations. This solvation time correlation and ion-ion dynamic structure factor indeed exhibits highly interesting, non-trivial dynamical behaviour at intermediate to longer times that require further experimental and theoretical studies.

Abstract:Light scattering experiments were performed on several fragile glass-forming materials at temperatures ranging from above the melting temperature T(m) to below the calorimetric glass transition temperature T(g) in the frequency range 0.2 GHz to 4000 GHz. The experimental susceptibility spectra chi''(omega) exhibit both the form and the scaling properties predicted by the idealized mode coupling theory. In particular, the scaling frequency omega(sigma) was found to obey the power law omega(sigma) is-proportional-to \T - T(C)\2alpha for three different materials, confirming the predicted ''critical slowing down'' as T --> T(C) from either above or below. At low frequencies and temperatures the spectra deviate from the predictions due to the neglect of ergodicity-restoring activated transport (hopping) processes. We have therefore reanalyzed the data using the extended version of the theory, including activated transport.

Abstract:Calculations within the mode-coupling theory of the glass transition (MCT) are used to elucidate the structure-dynamics relation in sodium-silicate melts (NSx) of varying sodium concentration. Using only the partial static structure factors from molecular-dynamics (MD) computer simulation as input, MCT qualitatively reproduces the large separation in relaxation time scales between the sodium and the silicon/oxygen components peculiar to such mixtures. This shows that it is possible to explain the fast sodium-ion dynamics observed in sodium-silicate melts using MCT as a microscopic theory, and from the averaged equilibrium structure alone.
Computational Study of the Physical Properties of a High Temperature Molten Salt Mixture of FLiNaK and CeF3

Abstract:In this work, we study the diffusion characteristics and structure of the molten salt FLiNaK with dissolved CeF3 in the operating temperature range of the molten-salt reactor. The temperature dependence of the self-diffusion coefficients of the ions that make up the salt mixture is represented with good accuracy as a linear dependence, except for the case of self-diffusion of Ce ions. As a rule, Li and F ions are more mobile than Na and K ions and significantly more so than slow Ce ions. The coordination numbers and their increase upon dissolution of CeF3 in FLiNaK were determined based on the calculation of partial radial distribution functions. The detailed structure of the melt is studied based on the construction of Voronoi polyhedra. The obtained topological characteristics indicate a predominantly tetrahedral type of distribution of Ce ions over the bulk of the system. Rotational symmetry of the 5th order prevails in the structure of the Li and F subsystems, and symmetries of the 3rd and 4th orders prevail in the Na and K subsystems, respectively. The simulation results can be used to search for actinide, which can be replaced by cerium in real experiments.

Abstract:The first experimental study of a mixed slab-toroidal ITG (ion temperature gradient) driven mode in the Columbia linear machine (CLM) is reported. The effects of the modest levels of magnetic curvature are seen to be further destabilization and reduction of the real frequency of the mode. However, with a further increase in the mirror ratio, the mode amplitude decreased. The mode has the appearance of a hybrid ITG-dissipative trapped electron mode.We have measured the reduction of anomalous fluctuation driven particle transport due to feedback via cross-correlation of Langmuir probe and capacitive probe data for a centrifugal mode driven by E x B rotation of the plasma column. The particle flux is obtained from cross power spectra of density and potential fluctuation. The resulting diffusion coefficient clearly indicates that feedback can reduce the transport by up to a factor of three.To investigate the question of non-linear saturation of the mode we have performed a bispectral analysis of fluctuation data. The results clearly indicate strong mode coupling in the spectral width of the mode. Furthermore, we resolve the spectral width to reveal that it is composed of radial harmonics. These observations suggest that the nonlinear mode coupling between these radial harmonics is the saturation mechanism of the instability, as well as the underlying cause of the consequent anomalous transport.

Abstract:Polarized and depolarized Brillouin scattering from 0.4 Ca(NO3)2-0.6KNO3 was investigated in the temperature range of 320 to 640 K using a six-pass Sandercock tandem Fabry-Perot interferometer. The polarized spectra were analyzed with a simplified version of mode-coupling theory, in which the small-q density fluctuation modes probed by light scattering couple only to pairs of modes at q0 corresponding to the first peak in the structure factor S(q). The density correlation function phi(q0,t) determined by neutron spin-echo experiments by Mezei et al. was used as input in the analysis, producing excellent fits to the experimental data. The depolarized spectra were analyzed with a phenomenological viscoelastic model including NO3- orientational relaxation.

Abstract:The structure of the molten salt (LiF)0.465(NaF)0.115(KF)0.42 (FLiNaK), a potential coolant for molten salt nuclear reactors, has been studied by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and neutron total scattering experiments. We find that the salt retains well-defined short-range structural correlations out to approximately 9 Å at typical reactor operating temperatures. The experimentally determined pair distribution function can be described with quantitative accuracy by the molecular dynamics simulations. These results indicate that the essential ionic interactions are properly captured by the simulations, providing a launching point for future studies of FLiNaK and other molten salts for nuclear reactor applications.<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#fn1">1</a>

Abstract:In this study, a coupled neutronics and thermal-hydraulics (THs) code named MOREL2.0, based on multi group diffusion theory and multi-channel THs model, was employed to analyze a channel-type molten salt reactor TMSR-LF and the impact of different fuel mix mode in plenum on its steady-state performance was also discussed. MOREL2.0 adopts "two-step" calculation scheme, in which few-group homogenized parameters are generated by lattice code PIJ, and diffusion equation considering the drift of delayed neutron precursors is coupled with multi-channel THs model, and the least square method is implemented for cross-section feedback in coupling scheme. The numerical results indicate that TMSR-LE has negative reactivity coefficients in term of inlet fuel temperature and core power level, and the response of k(eff) to mass flow is different for cases of nominal power and zero power, and k(eff) decreases with the rise of time of fuel salt spent in external loop and gradually tends to steady. Different mix mode in plenum have a greater impact on the mass flow distribution and delayed neutron precursors distribution, but less impact on core lumped parameter such as k(eff) and effective delayed neutron fraction. Abstract:The stability of the ion-temperature-gradient-driven mode in the long wavelength limit is investigated by retaining the kinetic effects associated with the ion transit frequency. The complete trapped electron dynamics is also considered. The toroidal branch is weakly affected by the trapped electron dynamics while the slablike branch is more strongly affected by trapped electrons. The implications of these results for the understanding of the improved confinement regimes observed in the presence of peaked density profiles is also discussed.

Abstract:The local structure of a typical molten salt ZnCl2, in which the chemical bonds can be viewed as half ionic and half covalent, has been studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Comparing with the recent EXAFS experimental results in the radial distribution functions simulated from different effective potentials, we found that KDR potential is a useful one and able to give a more realistic representation of ZnCl2 melt. Based on the instantaneous configurations given by the simulations with KDR potential, the near-neighbor structures in the crystalline and molten states of ZnCl2 have been studied by using the bond-order-parameter method. The results indicates that there exist the same stable Zn-Cl tetrahedral structures in molten ZnCl2 as in crystalline state while the square deviations of thermal fluctuation sigma of Zn-Cl units are different from each other. The calculations show sigma = 5.0 degrees in crystalline, 300K and sigma = 12.2 degrees in molten, 613K. In addition, the network-like structures and the transport properties of molten ZnCl2 were discussed in this paper.

Abstract:We propose a detailed investigation of the schematic mode-coupling approach to experimental data, a method based on the use of simple mode-coupling equations to analyze the dynamics of supercooled liquids. Our aim here is to clarify different aspects of this approach that appeared so far uncontrolled or arbitrary, and to validate the results obtained from previous works. Analyzing the theoretical foundations of the approach, we first identify the parameters of the theory playing a key role and obtain simple requirements to be met by a schematic model for its use in this context. Then we compare the results obtained from the schematic analysis of a given set of experimental data with a variety of models and show that they are all perfectly consistent. A number of potential biases in the method are identified and ruled out by the choice of appropriate models. Finally, reference spectra computed from the mode-coupling theory for a model simple liquid are analyzed along the same lines as experimental data, allowing us to show that, despite the strong simplification in the description of the dynamics it involves, the method is free from spurious artifacts and provides accurate estimates of important parameters of the theory. The only exception is the exponent parameter, the evaluation of which is hindered, as for other methods, by corrections to the asymptotic laws of the theory present when the dynamics is known only in a limited time or frequency range.
