Second Birth Intervals in Rural China:An HLM Analysis

Abstract:Using the original data of 2001 National Family Planning/Reproductive Health Survey, this paper investigates how the community-level and individual-level characteristics affect the length of second birth intervals in rural China. Hierarchical linear models are applied for this purpose, as the 2001 survey data essentially are of a nested structure entailing multilevel approaches. Results show that community-level variance accounts for more than one-third of the total variance of the second birth intervals, and there are evident constraints of the community-level determinants on the individual-level variables.
