Abstract:By introducing attribute-oriented induction methodology(AOI) of data mining,this paper puts forward a new exhibition method for murals based on knowledge discovery.Retrieval results are organized according to the correlation dimension of murals for presentation of comparison,which is helpful for the researchers to acquire implicit knowledge and enlighten new association rules.We present a composition-based relevance ranking to display result images.The applications in Dunhuang mural demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study in depth the spiritual and philosophical significance of the Dunhuang lotus pattern decoration and to explore its importance in the field of art. Through literature research and fieldwork, the paper analyses the symbolism of the lotus flower in Dunhuang culture, the artistic techniques, spiritual connotations and philosophical significance of the lotus pattern decoration. It is found that Dunhuang lotus pattern decoration is not only aesthetic, but also contains profound spiritual pursuit and philosophical thinking, which has an important inspiration and influence on contemporary art.
A Multi-Method Analysis of a Color Painting on Ancient Architecture from Anyuan Temple in Chengde, China

Abstract:Anyuan Temple, constructed in the 29th year of the Qing Dynasty (1764), serves as a repository of numerous Sanskrit inscriptions and Hexi color paintings from the Qing era. Among its collections, the green Tara Buddha statue, exquisitely carved from wood, is recognized as a national first-class cultural relic. This edifice is instrumental in advancing our comprehension of painting artistry in royal temples. The current research focused on the pigments and binders utilized in the color paintings within Anyuan Temple, located in Chengde. An investigative process entailed collecting four samples from the paintings adorning the temple's beams. These samples underwent comprehensive analysis using a variety of techniques, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS), Micro Raman Spectroscopy (m-RS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The examination revealed that the paintings comprised pigments of lead white, cinnabar, malachite, and azurite, corresponding to the colors white, red, green, and blue, respectively. The enduring stability and aesthetic appeal of these pigments suggest their suitability for use in future conservation efforts. Additionally, Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis identified animal glue as the binding agent in the wood component paintings. These insights are pivotal for the forthcoming restoration endeavors of Anyuan Temple, offering essential guidance in selecting the appropriate materials for restoration.

Collection of scientific works “Notes on Art Criticism”

Abstract:The aim of the work is to describe «the Pilgrimage to Dunhuang» as an art project organized on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Gansu Academy of Painting. The research methodology included the use of general scientific principles of descriptiveness, systematicity and objectivity. The general scientific research methods are used in the work: analysis, synthesis, induction and deduction. Chronological and retrospective methods have become important for our study. The genetic method was used to trace the development of individual schools and artists and the state of contemporary Chinese art. The method of abstraction, which involves the transition from general statements to specific conclusions, has also become important. Scientific novelty. The article highlights the main achievements and results of the Dunhuang Pilgrimage project, which allowed us to rethink the heritage of contemporary Chinese art. Conclusions. The Gansu Academy of Arts, established in the early 1990s, has become one of the most important centers of artistic culture in the region. This institute promotes Chinese cultural achievements and research in various fields. In particular, the academy organizes various scientific lectures, seminars, art exhibitions, creative talks and other educational activities. One such project was the «Pilgrimage to Dunhuang». On a Chinese-wide scale, it has made it possible to accomplish several important tasks. In particular, during the first period of the project, special art exhibitions, lectures and scientific seminars were held, which contributed to the promotion of Chinese cultural achievements. In addition, the main emphasis was on the study and preservation of traditional Chinese culture. At the same time, some attention was paid to highlighting the artistic ties between Chinese and foreign cultures. The second stage involved the introduction of specific mechanisms for managing various artistic events - artists were able to realize their own ideas, to work freely on various projects. Thus, this project has demonstrated high efficiency and value in acquainting society with China's cultural heritage. Keywords: painting academy, research, project, Gansu.

Abstract:Artifacts pertaining to Buddhist culture are often studied in relation to their circulation from India throughout the rest of Asia; however, many traveled to Europe during the last few centuries as trade commodities and pieces for the art market, losing any devotional purpose in favor of a specific aesthetic sensitivity that was typically adapted to Western taste to appeal to collectors. This article presents a technical study of seven polychrome wooden sculptures from the Museo d'Arte Orientale (MAO) in Turin, Italy. Originally from China, these objects are generally attributed to the late Ming–early Qing dynasties (16th–18th centuries) based merely on stylistic and iconographic considerations. Scientific analysis sought to expand the available knowledge on their constituting materials and fabrication techniques, to address questions on their authenticity, to assess their state of preservation, and to trace the history of transformations they have undergone while transitioning from devotional objects to private collection and museum artwork. By delving into the sculptures' intricate paint stratigraphy, the results were also key to guiding treatment choices. The outcomes of this study were featured in the MAO exhibition "Buddha10. A Fragmented Display on Buddhist Visual Evolution" (October 2022–September 2023).

A Study on the Spatial Cognition of Chinese Landscape Painting by Employing Artistic Conception——Taking the Landscape Paintings of Bamboo for Example

Abstract:Artistic Conception is regarded as a basic concept in creation and appreciation of Chinese landscape paintings.This paper illustrates the artistic conception in the perspective of psychology, and tries to propose the artistic conception methodology of spatial cognition.And it studies the spatial cognition in the landscape paintings by employing the artistic conception.It takes the Chinese paintings from classical age to modern times as the research subjects.The total number of sample is 1608, among which 142 pieces of landscape paintings including bamboo are studied.Those paintings are analyzed in terms of spatial arrangement, quantity and morphology.By summarizing their common features, elaborating the artists' preference for the bamboo in the landscape paintings and restoring the original space according the principles of psychological process, it aims to define the artists' cognitive style towards bamboo.It's expected that this paper will provide references for space design in the landscape architecture.

Abstract:There aren't many historical materials from Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms, which is a big problem to the historians. Fortunately, a lot of temples with many historical pictures were built in Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms, and two of those religious pictures have been kept till today:one is Nanzhao Illustrations and the other one is Buddhism Pictures from Zhang. The former one portrays many Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Brahma and kings, which is a symmetrical combination made up by static images;while the latter one tells the story about Avalokitesvara's seven changes and the establishment of Nanzhao kingdom, that is, how the belief of Nantian Esoteric Buddhism Avalokitesvara in southeast Asia was brought into Nanzhao and gradually adopted by the royal families in Nanzhao. The two paintings have been tentatively studied by the scholars from both sides of Taiwan straits, which is very significant to the religious culture study in Nanzhao.

Abstract:Guangxi Zhuang Dao is one of the representative elements of Zhuang culture, and its forging skill is famous for its unique texture patterns. Through direct dialogue and in-depth discussion with the representative inheritor of Zhuang Dao, this paper analyzes Zhuang Dao culture from the perspective of cultural memory. Based on this, the paper analyzes the inheritance and development process of Zhuang Dao and puts forward countermeasures and suggestions to promote the inheritance, protection and innovation of Zhuang Dao from the three aspects of inheritor, government and society, so as to preserve the cultural memory of Zhuang Dao better.

Abstract:Chinese art history has changed the closed painting history into the international art tide since the 20th century as we can see from the cases of Chinese art history,such as Chen Shizeng and Pan Tianshou's The History of China Painting influenced by Japanese art historians in 1920s,Li Puyuan's An Introduction to the History of Chinese Art and Teng Gu's History of the Tang and Song Painting influenced by the Western historical materialism in1930s,and the British scholar Ke Lige's Ming art research and the Chinese American scholars Fang Wen's Chinese art history studies in the late period of the 20th century.There are two primary paths as following: On the one hand,the theories and methods of the Japanese and the Western have profoundly impacted on the study of art history scholars in China;On the other hand,China's scholars like Fang Wen have created new research methods to respond to the challenge of Western art historians so as to promote the in-depth development of Chinese art history into the international world,which should be one of the countermeasures and directions of China art history research in the 21st century.

Abstract:Divination, as an important component of Chinese philosophy, plays an important role in reflecting the complex historical background in history and folklore. Especially in the Dunhuang region, which has experience in cross-cultural communication, the divination books unearthed from it have high reference value for understanding the complex historical background of Dunhuang at that time. This article selects the Dunhuang Birdsong Divination Book IOLTibJ747 as the research object, and through text analysis and historical analysis, re-examines the living conditions of the Dunhuang people during the Tibetan rule and the influence reflected by cross-cultural experiences. On the one hand, this article believes that IOLTibJ747 has a multilingual nature and integrates folk tales born in various cultural backgrounds, as well as the cross-cultural experience of the Dunhuang region during Tibetan rule in terms of bird species selection. On the other hand, this article believes that IOLTibJ747's emphasis on the spatiotemporal coordinates of divination and the selection of divination themes both point to the historical fact that war was the main topic of people's life in the Dunhuang region during the Tibetan rule. This article has certain reference value for exploring academic approaches to cross-cultural research, international relations research, and social history research through Zi Xue academic literature.
Body as Echoes: Cyber Archiving of Buddhist Deities in the Cave Temples of China

Abstract:In this on-going project entitled “Body As Echoes” (BAE), literature review, field research, and interviews of the practitioners are utilized to examine the iconography, conservation and digital heritage imaging of Buddhist deities in the cave-temple complexes of China. Archives, image sequences, point cloud visualizations, 3D models and web-based interactive navigations are accumulated from the various cave-temple complexes in China (Dazu Rock Carvings, Maijishan cliff grottos, Huang Ze Temple, Thousand-Buddha Cliff, Dun Huang Cave paintings) to conduct the researches. The intangible aspect of the project includes the cultural meaning, interconnections between the depicted deities, accentuation of the dynamism of time and change, and the new media narrative in the digital space nowadays. Buddhism and its path from India, China to Japan symbolize the dissemination of intercultural activities along the Silk Road. Different geo-locations in China, on the other hand, are connected by cave art, religion, and culture. The existence and preservation of cultural heritage transcend the echoes of the digital humanities.
Comparison Between Painting and Sculpture of Eleven-headed Guanyin in the Northern Song Dynasty

Abstract:The topic investigated is the eleven-headed Guanyin in the Northern Song Dynasty. Details of the arts are provided and analyzed. A comparison between its painting and statue is also made. The research is made to figure out their difference and analyze the details by observation and comparison, which is used to discover characteristics and distinctive features through the findings of differences and similarities. It aimed to find out which of the expression methods can deliver a clearer interpretation. Both the hanging scroll and the sculpture have their own upsides and downsides. They showed that no matter what the art expression is, Guanyin is a representation of compassion and mercy. Although expression forms are different, the same idea can be delivered. Also, it is found that the gender of Guanyin is based on its personification, which is compassion and kindness. So, this bodhisattva has been designed to be more like a woman since the Song Dynasty.
REVISITING DUNHUANG: FIVE-W ART JOURNEY TO MOGAO CAVES

Abstract:Mogao Caves, collectively known as one of the five groups of cave shrines found in the Greater Dunhuang, were created between the 4th and 14th centuries. Among the 735 caves dug out of the cliff, the 492 caves in the south contain a collection of 45,000 square meters of murals, more than 2000 painted Buddhist statues and sculptures, and some 50,000 Buddhist scriptures and other relics. Between 1906 and 1919, many archaeologists and explorers of Central Asia visited the caves. The caves were opened to the public in 1979, and I first visited the caves in 2006. Two years later, I became a Chinese Art scholar in the Gulf. Fueled by my experience from the trip to the Mogao Caves, I injected a new dimension into the Middle East curriculum, introducing a new medium of artistic practice and a new paradigm of esthetic research. Using the Mogao Caves as a springboard, I introduced the Five-W approach to study artwork. This paper offers a relook, using this approach, at the Mogao Caves based on some of my research findings.

Abstract:The cave temple complex of Dunhuang is a unique example of a large-scale synthesis of arts in the interiors of sanctuaries of the 4th – 114th centuries. The article systematizes the scientific source base, the materials of the graduate student's own field studies, and on their basis, the periodization of wall paintings and sculptures is analyzed and the peculiarities of the genesis of the figurative concept, methods of artistic expression, common plots, etc. are determined. The innovation of the presented research consists in summing up the evidence base for known theses. This is traced by various defining features, which are specific plots in different periods, compositional structure, polychromy, methods of detailing. Using the example of the wall painting with Buddha, the well-known chronology of the three stages of the development of the wall painting is visually argued and detailed: – 1st stage – period of development (Northern Liang Dynasty (401-439), Northern Wei Dynasty (439-534), Western Wei Dynasty (535-556), Northern Zhou Dynasty (557-581)); – 2nd stage – the period from prosperity to decline (Sui dynasty (581-618), Tang dynasty (618-907), Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907-960), the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127); – 3rd stage – period of borrowings (Xi Xia dynasty (1038-1227), Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). A comparison of the stages of the development of frescoes and sculptures and the periods of the appearance, flourishing and decline of various genres of wall painting (religious Buddhist, portrait, landscape) showed that despite the fact that the political and economic situation, the cultural and artistic preferences and religious commitment of the rulers equally influenced the activation of the development or the decline of art, the stages of development of mural painting and sculpture do not always coincide. In the same way, the period of the appearance and spread of various subjects was analyzed and it was proved that the canonical Buddhist images also underwent significant changes, giving rise to new and new compositions (for example, the appearance in the Tang era of the composition "Buddha in Nirvana" with a giant figure of the Buddha, or the spread of sculptures of a multi-armed Guanyin in the Yuan era).

Abstract:A substantial portion of the murals and manuscripts housed in the Sutra Caves of Dunhuang is intimately tied to the cult of the Medicine Buddha. An examination of the Catalogue of Dunhuang Mogao Caves compiled by the Dunhuang Academy, alongside the New Catalogue of the Dunhuang Manuscripts edited by Huang Yongwu, reveals the presence of 295 texts pertaining to the Medicine Buddha, underscoring the prevalence of this belief system in Dunhuang. The popularity of the Medicine Buddha belief in the region emerged as a pivotal factor influencing the evolution of sutra illustrations’ content and form. The Medicine Buddha’s attributes of averting calamities, curing illnesses, and prolonging life—all catering to worldly aspirations—resonated deeply with people’s pursuit of immediate benefits in this life. This paper employs a multifaceted approach, encompassing documentary research, iconographic analysis, and comparative studies, to trace the historical trajectory and graphical transformations of the “Medicine Buddha Sutra Illustrations” (Yaoshijing Biantu), culminating in a comprehensive synthesis. Furthermore, by delving into the societal backdrop, the underlying economic underpinnings, and the evolving “compositional strategies” of these illustrations across various eras, we aim to present a holistic view of the dynamic development of the Medicine Buddha Sutra illustrations throughout time.
