Abstract:Ionic crystal ceramics are known to be susceptible to brittle cracks along the intergranular due to the strong ionic bond forces. Accordingly, an outstanding toughened coating consisting of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ) and MgO, with a reinforced heterointerface, has been successfully achieved through the plasma electrolytic oxidation process. The results demonstrate that the enhanced Zr/Y-O bond strength improves the interfacial strength of the ionic crystal, while the lattice distortion activates continuous dislocation pinning at the (101) YSTZ//(111) MgO semicoherent heterointerface effectively hinders crack propagation of the coating. With the YSTZ content approaching 65 %, the toughness (KIC) value surpasses that of PEO coating by 42 %. These findings not only elucidate the scientific foundation for the improved toughness of the YSTZ/MgO nanocoating but also provide valuable insights into design strategies for improving ceramic toughness.

Abstract:Zirconia ceramics have become increasingly used as dental implant material which is mainly due to their "tooth-like" color, superior biocompatibility, and excellent mechanical properties. However, the bio-inertness of the zirconia surface limits its use for a wider range of clinical applications. To enhance the surface bioactivity, a combination of magnetron sputtering, and anodization has in the present study been used to deposit a homogeneous nano-porous coating (ZrNP) on the zirconia surface (forming ZrO2/ZrNP with a ZrNP pore diameter of 20-30 nm, and a ZrNP layer thickness of similar to 2 mu m). EDS and XRD analysis showed that the distribution of the surface chemical components, as well as the crystalline structure of the zirconia (ZrO2), remained unchanged. On the other hand, the hydrophilicity of the ZrO2/ZrNP surface became significantly improved (as compared with a control group). In addition, the bond strength of the coating was decreased as a result of the anodization treatment. Moreover, both the Zr and ZrNP nanolayers exhibited improved proliferation and osteogenic properties in the in vitro cell experiment. Also, the ZrNP nanolayer was found to promote the biocompatibility and osteogenic ability to the largest extent. The ZrNP nanolayer did also provide numerous adhesion sites for MC3T3-E1 whereby the cell morphology could be enhanced. Additionally, the nano porous ZrNP layer improved the new bone formation around the zirconia implant and did robustly enhance the push out bond strength, thereby indicating the best osteointegration ability. In conclusion, a nano porous zirconium layer has been found to be very promising for the improvement of the bioactivity of the zirconia implant material.

Abstract:Polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) coatings of considerable thickness can offer promising protection for metallic and superalloy substrates against oxidation and corrosion, yet the preparation remains challenging. Here, a SiOC/Al2O3/YSZ coating was prepared on a nickel alloy with a spraying method using Al2O3 and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as passive fillers. The thickness can reach up to 97 mu m with the optimal mass fraction and particle sizes of the passive fillers. A small or isolated SiOC phase is formed in the coating, which can effectively alleviate the shrinkage and cracking during the pyrolysis. The SiOC/Al2O3/YSZ coating exhibits low thermal conductivity and high bonding strength with the substrate. Moreover, the coating shows good thermal shock resistance between 800 degrees C-room temperature cycles and oxidation resistance at 1000 degrees C for 36 h. This work provides an effective guide for the design of thick PDC coatings to further promote their application in the thermal protective field.

Abstract:A novel atomic layer method for encapsulating individual micro‐ and nano‐particles with thin (sub‐10‐nm) dielectric films is presented. This method leverages the diffusion of vapor‐phase precursors through an underlying inert polymer film to achieve growth of a metal oxide film on all sides of the particle simultaneously, even on the side that is in contact with the substrate. Crucially, the deposition is performed on stationary particles and does not require an agitation mechanism or a special reaction chamber. Here, conformal coatings of alumina are shown to improve stability in aqueous environments for two optically relevant particles: compound semiconductor laser microparticles and lead halide perovskite nanocrystals.

Abstract:Zirconium coating on Zirconium-Niobium alloy substrate was obtained by pulsed current electrodeposition from FLINAK-K2ZrF6 molten salt at 1023 K in argon atmosphere. The microstructure and morphology of the coating were investigated. The adhesion between coating and substrate, porosity of the coating surface was tested. Metallic zirconium crystal of zirconium coating is a hexagonal crystal structure with the preferential growth orientation of (002). The porosity of the coating surface is 1.7%. The adhesion between coating and substrate is good in the scratch test, and the adhesive force of the zirconium coating is 10.5 N. Furthermore, on the inner and outer walls of a 10 mm diameter tube, the same quality zirconium coating can be obtained.

Abstract:ZrO2 films were fabricated by plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition (PIIID) on the polished NiTi alloys. The results obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) showed the dense and well adhered ZrO2 coating were successfully fabricated by PIIID. Pin-on-disc and scratch tests revealed the surface friction coefficient of NiTi alloys was decreased due to the ZrO2 coating and good adhesion strength between the coating and substrate was obtained, respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies indicated a significantly larger increase of the coated sample in the corrosion resistance compared with the uncoated samples. The mechanism of the improvement in the corrosion resistance of NiTi alloys due to ZrO2 coating was clarified.

Abstract:An environment-friendly non-chromium chemical conversion coating was obtained from fluozirconate/fluotitanate acidic solution for the corrosion protection of AA 5083. The surface morphology, composition, electrochemical behavior and corrosion resistance of this coating were investigated. The coating was found to be a homogeneous and dense layer consisting of nano-size particles, of which the major component was compound oxides consisted by Al, Mg, Zr, Ti, F and O. The results of electrochemical measurements, immersion and natural salt spray (NSS) tests demonstrated that the corrosion resistance of the AA 5083 H-116 was improved by the nano-sized non-chromium chemical conversion coating considerably, which was most attributed to the great inhibitive action on the anodic dissolution by acting as a protective barrier layer.

Abstract:Polymer coating on the surface of inorganic ceramic nanoparticles is beneficial to decrease agglomeration and improve dispersion in organic solvent in ceramic injection moulding technology. A layer of thin polymer film on zirconia nanoparticles is deposited by inductively coupled ethylene/nitrogen plasma. Transmission electron microscopy photographs indicate the presence of uniform polymer coatings and the thickness of the polymer layer is estimated as several nanometers. The chemical structure of the film is revealed as quasi-polyethylene long hydrocarbon chain by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy examination. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Al2O3-ZrO2 composite coating was prepared on zirconium by micro-arc oxidation in an aqueous NaAlO2-containing electrolyte. The coating is composed of alpha-Al2O3, tetragonal ZrO2 (t-ZrO2) and monoclinic ZrO2 (m-ZrO2), and firmly adherent to the substrate. The maximum hardness of the coating reaches 1630 Hv(0.2 N), and the friction coefficient of the coating against steel is as low as 0.115 at 200-1000 N loads under oil-lubricated condition. The high-temperature oxidation and mechanical properties of the Cr/Zr and CrN/Zr coating

Abstract:Coating technology to modify the property of zirconium (Zr) alloy is a potential method for accident-tolerant fuel claddings. In this work, Cr-coated and CrN-coated are prepared on the surface of Zr alloy by using multi-arc ion plating technology. The effect of coatings on the high-temperature oxidation performance at 800, 1000, and 1200 °C has been investigated. The oxidation behavior, microstructure, and phase composition of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis. The mechanical properties of the coatings before and after oxidation were examined by ring compressive and hardness tests. It is shown that all the Cr and CrN coating can effectively protect the substrate from oxidation corrosion in air due to the formation of Cr2O3, which can effectively reduce the penetration of oxygen. The thickness of the oxide layer from the side of the coating doesn't exceed to 5 μm at 1000 °C, and from the uncoated side reaches to 70 μm with pores and rough structure. Bubbles appeared on the surface of the coated samples after oxidizing at 1200°C. These bubbles are located at the Cr and Cr2O3 layers. The high-temperature oxidation resistance of Cr coating at 1200°C is better than that of CrN, the latter appears to crack and spall on the oxide layer. Due to the higher fracture toughness, ductility of the Cr coating and more suitable deformation compatibility, the Cr coating possesses better crack resistance than the CrN coating under mechanical loading.

Abstract:Nanostructured coatings are experiencing a rapid development in recent years due to their potential applications in a wide variety of technological areas. In order to improve the properties of thermal barrier coatings, nanostructured 8 wt% yttria partial stabilized zirconia coatings were deposited by air plasma spraying with reconstituted nanoparticles on titanium alloy substrates. For comparison, the conventional counterparts were also fabricated. Their microstructures were investigated by using transmission electron micrograph and scanning electron micrograph. Their mechanical behaviors were evaluated via Vickers microhardness test and tensile test. The results indicate that the nanostructured zirconia coatings with original nanostructure and columnar grains have higher microhardness and adhesive strength than the conventional counterparts. Both the nanostructured coating and the conventional coating exhibit a bimodal distribution of microhardness values, which are analyzed via Weibull statistics. This phenomenon is attributed to the presence of molten and non-molten parts in the coatings.

Abstract:In this article we provide a large-scale and low-cost method, based on metal–organic frameworks, to fabricate nanostructured conformal coatings with the same material as the substrate. Such design can reduce the thermal mismatch between coatings and substrate and massively change the local thermal conductivity and interfacial heat transfer coefficient. Therefore, the thermal shock resistance can be enhanced to about 75%. We describe all aspects of such nanostructured conformal coatings from fabrication to characterization. Moreover, the mechanism of this enhancement due to high porosity and low pore size of nanoporous coating is discussed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials, impermeable to various mediums, have ignited the great interest in developing multifunction nanocomposite coatings. Even though Al2O3 has excellent thermal and chemical stability, it is hard to obtain Al2O3 nanosheets from their non-lamellar structured bulk counterparts. In this work, we have developed a bottom–up strategy to synthesize several-nanometer thick Al2O3 nanosheets by taking graphene oxide as the templates, and further improved their dispersibility by modifying them with poly-dopamine (PDA). These PDA-modified Al2O3 nanosheets were then successfully integrated into the nanosized ZrO2 coating to enhance its anti-corrosion and gas permeation reduction properties. With the Al2O3 nanosheets inserted, corrosion resistance and deuterium resistance of the ZrO2 coating were increased by 1000% and 1557%, respectively, both of which were above two orders of magnitude higher than that of the 321 steel substrate. The significant improvements achieved by Al2O3 nanosheets demonstrate their capacity to effectively block the diffusion of both ions and deuterium atoms. This work not only offers a new platform for fabricating nanosheets from non-lamellar structured materials, but also indicates tremendous potential of Al2O3 nanosheets as a novel filler for developing high-performance functional coatings.

Abstract:In this research, nano-ZrO2/TiO2 composite coatings were designed for titanium alloys by the in-situ incorporation of ZrO2 nanoparticles into a TiO2 ceramic coating. Precise control over the content and structure of nano-ZrO2 in this nanocomposite coating was achieved by manipulating the pH of the electrolyte during plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The synthesis process and mechanism of tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2) were revealed by analyzing the phase composition and microstructure of the coating. The influence of pH on the formation of t-ZrO2 was also revealed. By detecting changes in the electrolyte solute composition before and after PEO, the Zr(OH)4 precursor was determined to be the source of the t-ZrO2 nanoparticles in the composite coating. The yield of t-ZrO2 in the composite coating increased upon increasing the pH of the electrolyte. Moreover, the thermal shock tests showed that increasing the t-ZrO2 content remarkably improved the thermal resistance of the coatings. This strategy and the research outcomes are expected to have great significance for developing advanced nanocomposite coatings on titanium alloys with enhanced thermal shock resistance.

Abstract:Zirconium dioxide ZrO2 is used as a basic material for thermal barriers and as a biomaterial for manufacturing parts for hip implants in orthopedic surgery and in dentistry for making crowns. Use of ZrO2 ceramics as an insulating material and biomaterial is due to its good chemical and dimensional stability, mechanical strength, toughness and elastic modulus. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of zirconium oxide coating of stabilized cerium and yttrium oxide deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process on the bond coating of nickel chromium cobalt yttrium oxide. Coatings were deposited on cold substrates and on substrates preheated to 180°C. Composite powder nickel chromium/aluminum/cobalt/yttrium oxide was used for the production of bond layers and for the ceramic layers zirconium oxide stabilized with cerium and yttrium oxide powder. Testing the quality of coatings was done by measuring microhardness of layers using the HV method and for bond tensile strength of the coating system tensile testing was applied. Metallographic evaluation of the share of pores in the bond and ceramic layers was performed with image analysis - processing of images from a light microscope. Powder particle morphology and EDS analysis were performed on the SEM. The obtained results confirm that the preheating temperature of the substrate has a significant impact on structural mechanical properties of the tested coatings system.

Abstract:Coatings with thickness 40 to 150 μm were formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on the zirconium alloy Zr-1Nb (Zr-1% Nb) in the slurry electrolyte containing 9 g/L Na2SiO3 5H2O, 5 g/L Na(PH2O2) and 6 g/L submicron Y2O3 yttria powder during 60 min under the AC electrical mode at current densities 20; 30 and 40 A/dm2. The surface morphology, structure, composition, and corrosion-protective ability of the formed coatings have been analyzed. At PEO current density 30 A/dm2, a predominantly tetragonal phase of zirconia was formed in coatings. Increasing the PEO current density up to 40 A/dm2 promoted the formation of the coating surface layer containing submicron yttria particles. Electrochemical polarization studies in 0.5% LiOH solution showed that PEO coatings demonstrated high corrosion-protective ability. The dependence of the polarization currents on the PEO current density was found to be inconsequential.

Abstract:Functional nanoporous materials are promising for a number of applications ranging from selective biofiltration to fuel cell electrodes. This work reports the functionalization of nanoporous membranes using atomic layer deposition (ALD). ALD is used to conformally deposit platinum (Pt) and aluminum oxide (Al(2)O(3)) on Pt in nanopores to form a metal-insulator stack inside the nanopore. Deposition of these materials inside nanopores allows the addition of extra functionalities to nanoporous materials such as anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. Conformal deposition of Pt on such materials enables increased performances for electrochemical sensing applications or fuel cell electrodes. An additional conformal Al(2)O(3) layer on such a Pt film forms a metal-insulator-electrolyte system, enabling field effect control of the nanofluidic properties of the membrane. This opens novel possibilities in electrically controlled biofiltration. In this work, the deposition of these two materials on AAO membranes is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Successful process parameters are proposed for a reliable and cost-effective conformal deposition on high aspect ratio three-dimensional nanostructures. A device consisting of a silicon chip supporting an AAO membrane of 6 mm diameter and 1.3 μm thickness with 80 nm diameter pores is fabricated. The pore diameter is reduced to 40 nm by a conformal deposition of 11 nm Pt and 9 nm Al(2)O(3) using ALD.

Abstract:The nano-hydroxyapatite/zirconia coating of double layers on surface of titanium allay materials have been prepared using electrochemical method. The features and structures of the composite coating materials are studied and analyzed by the Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and EDAX measurement. The results show that nano-HA/ZrO2 are densely and uniformly deposited on the surface of titanium allays in ionic form, a stable gradient composite coating, in which the nano-zirconium oxides (ZrO2) are homogeneously distributed between HA and titanium surfaces, are obtained. The tensile strength experiment exhibits that the adhesion or combined strength of the coating with the titanium surface is higher and about 17GPa, which manifests the nano-HA/ ZrO2 coating is successfully combined on the surface of the titanium allay materials. The biological experiments represent that this material can be used in repairing of bone and medical dental-implant of teeth.
