Lineage Organizations as Contemporary Citizens’Organizations: A Perspective of Civil Society

Abstract:As for the form of association,lineage organization is traditional,but as a real organization,it is contemporary. So many researches on lineage organizations have ignored such a basic fact,and they have failed to regard the lineage organizations which have emerged over the past thirty years as contemporary citizens’free-will associations. This paper takes the case of the Zheng’s Family honored as"the First Lineage Organization in the South-of-the-Yangtze Area " to show that lineage organizations can be regarded as contemporary ordinary social organizations,and lineage organizations are in the final analysis contemporary citizens’organizations using the resources of traditional organizations. This kind of research is significant for us to understand the relationships between state and society,tradition and reality,and farmers and citizens.
