Abstract:Objective To discuss the surgical timing in the cervical spinal fracture associated with acute cervical spinal cord injury. Methods A data of 42 patients with cervical spinal cord injury treated in our depart ment from Jan 2000 to Jan 2011 were retrospectively studied.Of 42 cases,18 underwent emergency surgery(time from injury to surgical ≤24 h),and 24 cases received non-emergency surgery(>24 h).Neurological functions, postoperative complications and hospital stay were analyzed statistically. Results The sensory and motor function got more significant improvement in emergency surgery group than that control group. In the incidence rate of complications,ICU and hospital stay, the emergency surgery group was lower than that non-emergency surgery group. Conclusion Emergency surgical decompression for cervical spine fracture associated with acute cervical spinal cord injury is feasible in the recovery of neurologic function and reduces perioperative complications.
