Abstract:Intelligent manufacturing is a general concept that is under continuous development. It can be categorized into three basic paradigms: digital manufacturing, digital-networked manufacturing, and new-generation intelligent manufacturing. New-generation intelligent manufacturing represents an in-depth integration of new-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology and advanced manufacturing technology. It runs through every link in the full life-cycle of design, production, product, and service. The concept also relates to the optimization and integration of corresponding systems; the continuous improvement of enterprises’ product quality, performance, and service levels; and reduction in resources consumption. New-generation intelligent manufacturing acts as the core driving force of the new industrial revolution and will continue to be the main pathway for the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry in the decades to come. Human-cyber-physical systems (HCPSs) reveal the technological mechanisms of new-generation intelligent manufacturing and can effectively guide related theoretical research and engineering practice. Given the sequential development, cross interaction, and iterative upgrading characteristics of the three basic paradigms of intelligent manufacturing, a technology roadmap for “parallel promotion and integrated development” should be developed in order to drive forward the intelligent transformation of the manufacturing industry in China.

Abstract:This paper first introduces the project of intelligent manufacturing in China and the research state of the IIMRC (Intelligent and Integrated Manufacturing Research Centre) of HUST (Huazhong University of Science and Technology), then reviews the recent advances in object- oriented and distributed artificial intelligence and puts forth the view that these advances open up the prospect of systems that will enable the true integration of enterprises. In an attempt to identify domain requirements and match them with research achievements, the paper examines the current literature and distinguishes 14 features that are common. It argues that effective enterprise-wide support could be greatly facilitated by the existence of intelligent software entities with autonomous processing capabilities, that possess coordination and negotiation facilities and are organized in distributed hierarchical states.

Abstract:To face the challenge of the upcoming knowledge-intensive industries, the current state-of-the-art of mechanical CAD (Computer-Aided Design) technique, which is based on numerical calculation combined with a computer graphics function, cannot fully meet the need of decision-making automation. Any complex mechanical design generally consists of two different processes, i.e., qualitative reasoning and quantitative computation. The qualitative decision-making of design, such as conceptual design, is usually hard to depict with numerical models. It is becoming apparent that a new methodology is demanding the integration of numerical processing and symbolic reasoning, to integrate different domain knowledge as well as to integrate different objectives and functions into a complete software environment for more advanced design automation. This paper presents a parallel hierarchical structure of an integrated intelligent system and application in mechanical design.

Abstract:Manufacturing is a prime generator of wealth and is critical in establishing a sound basis for economic growth. Manufacturing is also the cornerstone of all economic activities, and efforts to continuously advance manufacturing technology are therefore vital to a richer and more stable future. Intelligent Manufacturing (IM), believed to be the next generation advanced manufacturing paradigm is extensively investigated by industry and academia. In this chapter, we firstly recall the course of manufacturing development and summarize the characteristics of the four revolutions in this course. Subsequently, the broad sense of ‘manufacturing’ is articulated and the characteristics of manufacturing activities in the operation of manufacturing processes are depicted. The differences and relationships between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Manufacturing Intelligence (MI) are then presented. Abstract:This paper first discusses development of the new-generation intelligent manufacturing from the aspects of problems and challenges of the manufacturing industry, major opportunities brought by new-generation artificial intelligence, and core technologies of the new round of industrial revolution. By analyzing the evolution process of intelligent manufacturing, this paper points out that the process of development from traditional manufacturing to intelligent manufacturing is also a process of development from the original human-physical systems (HPS) to a human-cyber-physical systems (HCPS). HCPS reveals the basic principles of intelligent manufacturing development and is the theoretical basis for supporting the development of the new-generation intelligent manufacturing. Abstract:Based on the analysis of the characteristics and operation status of the process industry, as well as the development of the global intelligent manufacturing industry, a new mode of intelligent manufacturing for the process industry, namely, deep integration of industrial artificial intelligence and the Industrial Internet with the process industry, is proposed. This paper analyzes the development status of the existing three-tier structure of the process industry, which consists of the enterprise resource planning, the manufacturing execution system, and the process control system, and examines the decision-making, control, and operation management adopted by process enterprises. Based on this analysis, it then describes the meaning of an intelligent manufacturing framework and presents a vision of an intelligent optimal decision-making system based on human-machine cooperation and an intelligent autonomous control system. Finally, this paper analyzes the scientific challenges and key technologies that are crucial for the successful deployment of intelligent manufacturing in the process industry.

Abstract:With ever-increasing market competition and advances in technology, more and more countries are prioritizing advanced manufacturing technology as their top priority for economic growth. Germany announced the Industry 4.0 strategy in 2013. The US government launched the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) in 2011 and the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) in 2014. Most recently, the Manufacturing USA initiative was officially rolled out to further “leverage existing resources... to nurture manufacturing innovation and accelerate commercialization” by fostering close collaboration between industry, academia, and government partners. In 2015, the Chinese government officially published a 10-year plan and roadmap toward manufacturing: Made in China 2025. In all these national initiatives, the core technology development and implementation is in the area of advanced manufacturing systems. A new manufacturing paradigm is emerging, which can be characterized by two unique features: integrated manufacturing and intelligent manufacturing. This trend is in line with the progress of industrial revolutions, in which higher efficiency in production systems is being continuously pursued. To this end, 10 major technologies can be identified for the new manufacturing paradigm. This paper describes the rationales and needs for integrated and intelligent manufacturing (i2M) systems. Related technologies from different fields are also described. In particular, key technological enablers, such as the Internet of Things and Services (IoTS), cyber-physical systems (CPSs), and cloud computing are discussed. Challenges are addressed with applications that are based on commercially available platforms such as General Electric (GE)’s Predix and PTC’s ThingWorx.

Abstract:Intelligent manufacturing has promoted the development of Industry 4.0 and enabled the manufacturing industry to gradually move into the stage of intelligence with the rapid development of the Internet of Things and the Industrial Internet. An intelligent manufacturing system is a manufacturing system that can automatically adapt to changing environments and varying process requirements with minimal supervision and assistance from operators. Therefore, intelligent manufacturing has become a recognized core high technology to enhance the overall competitiveness of the manufacturing industry. The goal of intelligent manufacturing is to make production resources form a circular network with the characteristics of autonomy, adjustability, and configurability, to develop production processes flexibly, and to realize the efficiency of individual customization. For example, by analyzing the factory floor data, equipment monitored data, and the enterprise manufacturing database, it could help to store, explore, and make complex decisions for the manufacturing system. To achieve this goal, modern information technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and mobile Internet, modeling, control, and optimization need to be integrated and collaborated with the physical resources of the manufacturing process, which triggers new theory, solution algorithms, and application scenarios.

Abstract:Human is the most dynamic factor in a manufacturing system; no matter how advanced intelligent manufacturing would be, it should meet humans’ needs and serve for a better life. Based on the theory of human–cyber–physical systems (HCPS) in the context of intelligent manufacturing, the concept of human-centered intelligent manufacturing (HCIM) is firstly proposed in this work. HCIM is discussed from the aspects of background, connotation, human factors, technical system, and practical applications. It clarifies that HCIM not only reflects an important perspective, but also represents one of the significant research directions of intelligent manufacturing. On this basis, several suggestions are recommended from policy decision-making, enterprise development, and scientific research levels, including linking HCIM with relevant national strategies, regarding HCIM as a key concept for enterprises’ development, and enhancing research on human factors/ergonomics in intelligent manufacturing systems. It’s expected that this work can provide a reference to promote HCIM development and applications in China.

Abstract:This paper presents some newest and potential developments on artificial intelligent technologies for welding manufacturing process in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), which contains multi-information acquirement and fusion processing of arc welding dynamical process; Intelligent computing for welding process; Intelligent control methods for welding process and quality control; artificial intelligent technologies for welding robot systems and robotic welding process; and some application in welding engineering. The ideas of intelligentized welding manufacturing technology (IWMT) and intelligentized welding manufacturing engineering (IWME) are presented in this paper for systematization of intending researches and applications on intelligentized technologies for modern welding manufacturing.

Abstract:The new intelligent manufacturing system integrates information and communication technologies (ICTs) with industrial technologies and supports the rapidly unfolding new round of industrial revolution. The rapid evolution of ICTs gives intelligent manufacturing the potential for accelerated development. This paper proposes a technical system for the new intelligent manufacturing system and elaborates the connotation and characteristics of a technical subsystem regarding ICTs from the perspective of industrial Internet system technologies and four basic technologies, namely, industrial big data, artificial intelligence (AI), fifth-generation mobile communication (5G), and modeling simulation/digital twin. Subsequently, we present the vertical, horizontal, and end-to-end application scenarios of intelligent manufacturing enabled by ICTs, and propose several suggestions for promoting the new intelligent manufacturing system through ICTs. First, special science and technology projects should be established focusing on advanced networks, collaborative computing, and industrial knowledge reasoning. Second, Industrial development should focus on the R&D and industrialization of the following technologies: 5G application, network collaboration, intelligent and intelligently connected products based on new-generation AI technology, and domestication of modeling simulation/digital twin tool sets and systems. Third, Application demonstration should be conducted regarding industrial design based on 5G Plus industrial virtual reality, industrial platforms for AI Internet of Things, and intelligent design of industrial products based on modeling simulation/digital twin technology. Meanwhile, it is necessary to improve the efficient and collaborative working mechanism for promoting new intelligent manufacturing policies, accelerate the construction of interconnection standard groups, promote the industrial chain and supply chain through industry–university–research collaboration, and enhance the deep integration of industry and education in intelligent manufacturing.

Abstract:The operation and management of smart shop floors depends on the integration and interaction of various information systems. In this paper, a framework of intelligent manufacturing system based on digital twin (DT-IMS) is designed for smart shop floors. Intelligent manufacturing system is composed of DT layer, process layer (Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Process Planning), management layer, (Product Lifecycle Management), planning and scheduling layer (Enterprise Resource Planning and Manufacturing Execution System), perception layer (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), control layer (Programmable Logic Controller and Distributed Control System) and equipment layer. A digital twin model with high fidelity is established from the multidimensional dimension of geometry, physics, movement, behavior, rule, constraint and communication. Then, utilizing the historical data of each layer of information systems and the real-time data collected by industrial Internet of Things technology drive the digital twin model for simulation to realize the real-time function of process, production planning and scheduling and monitoring of the smart shop floor. The results show that the implementation of DT-IMS in an industrial company illustrates the potential advantages for process design, production planning and scheduling, monitoring and control with reduced complexity and uncertainty of the shop floor.

Abstract:Global competition and rapidly changing customer requirements are forcing major changes in the production styles and configuration of manufacturing enterprises. Traditional centralized manufacturing systems are not able to meet these requirements. In recent years, the internet has become the worldwide information platform for the sharing of information and data. Information processing is an important challenge in an internet-based manufacturing environment, and must facilitate distribution, heterogeneity, autonomy and cooperation. This paper reviews recent trends and major developments in internet-based manufacturing. Broad categories of distributed information management are identified, based upon the development of computer integrated manufacturing, and the possible direction of future research is indicated.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new smart manufacturing model for the process industry that incorporates the industrial Internet, industrial intelligence system, industrial artificial intelligence, and process industry. The model aims to maximize performance, optimize product value, and increase profitability through intelligent optimization systems that implement true cost modeling, production planning optimization, energy design, manufacturing event forensics, predictive maintenance planning, product quality management, and autonomous systems for sustainable production. We also address scientific issues such as human-machine collaborative optimal decision-making, dynamic system modeling and deep learning for control of complex operating states, 5G-based multi-source information transmission, intelligent modeling of complex industrial systems, digital twin technology and visualization, and prediction and traceability of key process parameters. The proposal concludes with a discussion of production indicators, intelligent autonomous control technology, and human-machine collaborative intelligent optimization decision-making, as well as industrial artificial intelligence algorithm collaborative implementation technology. The use of computer vision technology for mobile monitoring of the dynamic performance of decision-making processes is also presented as a key aspect of implementing intelligent manufacturing in process industries.

Abstract:Intelligent manufacturing is a type of manufacturing that adopts computer-integrated manufacturing, high-level adaptability and rapid design personalization, system reconfiguration, the digitaliza-tion of manufacturing processes and resources, and flexible and organized technical labor training. This Special Issue focuses on the application of advanced information and communication tech-nologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), advanced topology opti-mization methods, edge computing, cloud computing, 5G networks, the Industrial Internet, and the Internet of Things—to address problems that arise during the design, materials and manufacturing, logistics, and services associated with intelligent manufacturing. In this issue, we present eight articles contributed by scholars and experts from countries around the world, including China, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
