Abstract:Thallium (Tl) is a toxic heavy metal. Thallium can be released to the environment when thallium-containing materials and mines were exploited. Atmospheric emission and water pollution of thallium from industrial sources will result the possible adverse environment effects and human health problems. But now, quality control of thallium for drink water hasn’t been established in China. In order to set foundations to perfect the water quality indexes and ecological risk assessment, genotoxicity of thallium in water using Vica faba root tip cells micronucleus test technique was studied. The results showed that micronucleus frequencies and pollution indexes in Vicia faba root tip cells had risen companied by thallium contents increasing in water. Especially, micronucleus frequencies at thallium contents 2.0 and 3.0 μg·L-1 were 22.69‰ and 51.51‰ respectively, which were different significantly from control sample, and the pollution indexes were 3.80 and 8.63 separately. Otherwise, cell division indexes in Vicia faba root tip cells had no significant effect by the increase of thallium content in water except that cell division had been repressed significantly at 0.3 μg·L-(1P<0.05). Based on statistic analyzation and pollution indexes, thallium content at 1.0 μg·L-1 in water was initiatively regarded as the safe range, and thallium content above 2.0 μg·L-1 was severe pollution range.
