The Relationship of Environmental and Individual Factors with Adolescent Smoking Onset

Abstract:A sample of 659 pretested non-smoking 7th,8th,10th and 11th graders were selected in the present study to examine the relationship of environmental and individual factors with adolescent smoking onset.The results showed:(1) about 9% of adolescent reported smoking onset within a period of 6 months.Moreover,males and adolescents with poor academic performance were more likely to report smoking onset,compared to females and adolescents with good and excellent academic performance;(2) adolescent smoking onset was significantly correlated with the variation of the best peers' smoking behavior and smoking attitude,peer direct and norm pressure,mothers' smoking behavior,parents' smoking attitude,adolescent self-assertion,rebellion and resistant skill between wave 1 and wave 2;(3) adolescent smoking onset was significantly predicted by peer direct pressure,paternal smoking attitude and adolescent rebellion at baseline.
