Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the set of all factorization indices of a completely positive graph has no gaps. In other words, we give an affirmative answer to a question raised by N. Kogan and A. Berman [8] in the case of completely positive graphs.

First, we introduce the Neville factorizations of n x n strictly totally positive matrices as a product of bidiagonal totally positive matrices, and then obtain the planar network representation of the bidiagonal factorizations of strictly totally positive matrices.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and be a set of connected graphs. A spanning subgraph H of G is called an –factor if each component of H is isomorphic to a member of . In this paper, we first present a lower bound on the size (resp. the spectral radius) of G to guarantee that G has a –factor (or a perfect k –matching for even k ) and construct extremal graphs to show all this bounds are best possible. We then provide a lower bound on the signless laplacian spectral radius of G to ensure that G has a –factor, where is an integer. Moreover, we also provide some Laplacian eigenvalue (resp. toughness) conditions for the existence of –factor, –factor and –factor in G , respectively. Some of our results extend or improve the related existing results.

Abstract:Let G be a graph with vertex set V and let $$b>a$$ b > a be two positive integers. We say that G has all [a, b]-factors if G has an h-factor for every $$h: V\rightarrow {\mathbb {N}}$$ h : V → N such that $$a \le h(v) \le b$$ a ≤ h ( v ) ≤ b for every $$v\in V$$ v ∈ V and $$\sum _{v\in V}h(v)\equiv 0\pmod 2$$ ∑ v ∈ V h ( v ) ≡ 0 ( mod 2 ) . A spanning subgraph F of G is called an (a, b)-parity factor, if $$d_F (v) \equiv a \equiv b $$ d F ( v ) ≡ a ≡ b (mod 2) and $$a \le d_F (v) \le b$$ a ≤ d F ( v ) ≤ b for all $$v \in V$$ v ∈ V . In this paper, we have developed sufficient conditions for the existence of all [a, b]-factors and (a, b)-parity factors of G in terms of the independence number and connectivity of G. This work extended an earlier result of Nishimura (J Graph Theory 13: 63–69, 1989). Furthermore, we show that these results are best possible in some cases.

Abstract:Let G be a graph with vertex set V and let g,f:V→Z+ be two functions such that g≤f. We say that G has all (g,f)-factors if G has an h-factor for every h:V→Z+ such that g(v)≤h(v)≤f(v) for every v∈V and ∑v∈Vh(v)≡0(mod2). Two decades ago, Niessen derived from Tutte’s f-factor theorem a similar characterization for the property of graphs having all (g,f)-factors and asked whether there is a polynomial time algorithm for testing whether a graph G has all (g,f)-factors. (A characterization of graphs having all (g,f)-Factors, (Niessen, 1998).) In this paper, we show that it is NP-hard to determine whether a graph G has all (g,f)-factors, which gives a negative answer to the question of Niessen.

Abstract:Let $G$ denote a graph and $k\geq2$ be an integer. A $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factor of $G$ is a spanning subgraph, whose every connected component is isomorphic to an element of $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$, where $\mathcal{T}(2k+1)$ is one special family of tree. In this paper, we put forward some sufficient conditions for the existence of $\{K_{1,1},K_{1,2},\ldots,K_{1,k},\mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factors in graphs. Furthermore, we construct some extremal graphs to show that the main results in this paper are best possible.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected general graph. Let $f\colon V(G)\to \Z^+$ be a function. We show that $G$ satisfies the Tutte-type condition \[ o(G-S)\le f(S)\qquad\text{for all vertex subsets $S$}, \] if and only if it contains a colored $J_f^*$-factor for any $2$-end-coloring, where $J_f^*(v)$ is the union of all odd integers smaller than $f(v)$ and the integer $f(v)$ itself. This is a generalization of the $(1,f)$-odd factor characterization theorem, and answers a problem of Cui and Kano. We also derive an analogous characterization for graphs of odd orders, which addresses a problem of Akiyama and Kano.

Abstract:Let A be a set of connected graphs. Then a spanning subgraph A of G is called an A-factor if each component of A is isomorphic to some member of A. Especially, when every graph in A is a path, A is a path factor. For a positive integer d ≥ 2, we write P≥d = {Pi|i ≥ d}. Then a P≥d-factor means a path factor in which every component admits at least d vertices. A graph G is called a (P≥d,m)-factor deleted graph if G – E′ admits a P≥d-factor for any E′ ⊆ E(G) with |E′| = m. A graph G is called a (P≥d, k)-factor critical graph if G – Q has a P≥d-factor for any Q ⊆ V (G) with |Q| = k. In this paper, we present two degree conditions for graphs to be (P≥3,m)-factor deleted graphs and (P≥3, k)-factor critical graphs. Furthermore, we show that the two results are best possible in some sense.

Abstract:Let k≥1 be an integer and G be a graph. Let kG denote the graph obtained from G by replacing each edge of G with k parallel edges. We say that G has all [1,k]-factors or all fractional [1,k]-factors if G has an h-factor or a fractional h-factor for every function h:V(G)→{1,2,…,k} with h(V(G)) even. In this note, we come up with simple characterizations of a graph G such that kG has all [1,k]-factors or all fractional [1,k]-factors. These characterizations are extensions of Tutte’s 1-Factor Theorem and Tutte’s Fractional 1-Factor Theorem.

Abstract:An H-n-factor of a graph G is defined to be a spanning sub-graph F of G such that each vertex has a degree belonging to the set {1, 3, 5,..., 2n - 1, 2n} in F, where n >= 2. In this article, we investigate H-n-factors of graphs by using Lovasz's structural descriptions to the degree prescribed subgraph problem. We find some sufficient conditions for the existence of an H-n-factor of a graph. Abstract:Let G be a graph, and let k, r be nonnegative integers with k ≥ 2. A k-factor of G is a spanning subgraph F of G such that dF(x) = k for each x ∈ V (G), where dF(x) denotes the degree of x in F. For S ⊆ V (G), NG(S) = ∪x∊SNG(x). The binding number of G is defined by bind(G)=min{|NG(S)||S|:∅≠S⊂V(G),NG(S)≠V(G)}$\begin{array}{} (G) = {\rm{min }}\{ \frac{{|{N_G}(S)|}}{{|S|}}:\emptyset \ne S \subset V(G),{N_G}(S) \ne V(G)\} \end{array}$. In this paper, we obtain a binding number and neighborhood condition for a graph to have a k-factor excluding a given r-factor. This result is an extension of the previous results.

Abstract:This thesis concerns the study of homogeneous factorisations of complete graphs with edge-transitive factors. A factorisation of a complete graph $K_n$ is a partition of its edges into disjoint classes. Each class of edges in a factorisation of $K_n$ corresponds to a spanning subgraph called a factor. If all the factors are isomorphic to one another, then a factorisation of $K_n$ is called an isomorphic factorisation. A homogeneous factorisation of a complete graph is an isomorphic factorisation where there exists a group $G$ which permutes the factors transitively, and a normal subgroup $M$ of $G$ such that each factor is $M$-vertex-transitive. If $M$ also acts edge-transitively on each factor, then a homogeneous factorisation of $K_n$ is called an edge-transitive homogeneous factorisation. The aim of this thesis is to study edge-transitive homogeneous factorisations of $K_n$. We achieve a nearly complete explicit classification except for the case where $G$ is an affine 2-homogeneous group of the form $Z_p^R \rtimes G_0$, where $G_0 \leq \Gamma L(1,p^R)$. In this case, we obtain necessary and sufficient arithmetic conditions on certain parameters for such factorisations to exist, and give a generic construction that specifies the homogeneous factorisation completely, given that the conditions on the parameters hold. Moreover, we give two constructions of infinite families of examples where we specify the parameters explicitly. In the second infinite family, the arc-transitive factors are generalisations of certain arc-transitive, self-complementary graphs constructed by Peisert in 2001.

Abstract:Let G = (X, Y; E) be a bipartite graph, where X and Y are color classes and E is the set of edges of G. Lovasz and Plummer asked whether one can decide in polynomial time that a given bipartite graph G = (X, Y; E) admits a 1-anti-factor, that is subset F of E such that d(F)(v) = 1 for all v is an element of X and d(F)(v) not equal 1 for all v is an element of Y. Cornuejols answered this question in the affirmative. Yu and Liu asked whether, for a given integer k >= 3, every k-regular bipartite graph contains a 1-anti-factor. This paper answers this question in the affirmative.

Abstract:In this paper we obtain sufficient conditions using isolated vertices for component factors with each component of order at least three. In particular, we show that if a graph G satisfies iso(G−S)≤|S|/2 for all S⊂V(G), then G has a {K1,2,K1,3,K5}-factor, where iso(G−S) denotes the number of isolated vertices in G−S.

Abstract:For a graph $G = (V, E)$, a {\em fractional $[a, b]$-factor} is a real valued function $h:E(G)\to [0,1]$ that satisfies $a \le ~ \sum_{e\in E_G(v)} h(e) ~ \le b$ for all $ v\in V(G)$, where $a$ and $b$ are real numbers and $E_G(v)$ denotes the set of edges incident with $v$. In this paper, we prove that the condition $\mathit{iso}(G-S) \le (k+\frac{1}{2})|S|$ is equivalent to the existence of fractional $[1,k+ \frac{1}{2}]$-factors, where ${\mathit{iso}}(G-S)$ denotes the number of isolated vertices in $G-S$. Using fractional factors as a tool, we construct component factors under the given isolated conditions. Namely, (i) a graph $G$ has a $\{P_2,C_3,P_5, \mathcal{T}(3)\}$-factor if and only if $\mathit{iso}(G-S) \le \frac{3}{2}|S|$ for all $S\subset V(G)$; (ii) a graph $G$ has a $\{K_{1,1}, K_{1,2}, \ldots,$ $K_{1,k}, \mathcal{T}(2k+1)\}$-factor ($k\ge 2$) if and only if $\mathit{iso}(G-S) \le (k+\frac{1}{2})|S|$ for all $S\subset V(G)$, where $\mathcal{T}(3)$ and $\mathcal{T}(2k+1)$ are two special families of trees.

Abstract:Let $a\leq b$ be two positive integers. We say that a graph $G$ has all $[a,b]$-factors if it has an $h$-factor for every function $h: V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $a\le h(v) \le b$ for all $v\in V(G)$ and $\sum_{v\in V(G)}h(v)\equiv 0\pmod 2$, and has all fractional $[a,b]$-factors if it has a fractional $p$-factor for every $p: V(G) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $a\le p(v)\le b$ for all $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, we provide tight spectral radius conditions for graphs having all $[a,b]$-factors ($3\leq a<b$) and all fractional $[a,b]$-factors ($1\leq a<b$), respectively.

Abstract:Let a, b and r be three nonnegative integers with 2 <= a <= b - r, let G be a graph of order p satisfying the inequality p(a + r) >= (a + b - 3)(2a + b + r) +1, and let g and f be two integer-valued functions defined on V (G) satisfying a <= g(x) <= f(x) - r <= b - r for every x is an element of V (G). A graph G is said to be fractional ID-(g, f) -factor -critical if G - I contains a fractional (g, f)-factor for every independent set I of G. In this paper, we prove that G is fractional ID-(g, f) -factor-critical if bind(G) ((a + r)p - (a + b 2)) > (2a + b + r - 1)(p - 1), which is a generalization of a previous result of Zhou.
Equitable factorizations of highly edge-connected graphs: complete characterizations

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every highly edge-connected graph $G$, under a necessary and sufficient degree condition, can be edge-decomposed into $k$ factors $G_1,\ldots, G_k$ such that for each vertex $v\in V(G_i)$ with $1\le i\le k$, $|d_{G_i}(v)-d_G(v)/k|<1$. This characterization covers graphs having at least $k-1$ vertices with degree not divisible by $k$. In addition, we investigate almost equitable factorizations in arbitrary edge-connected graphs. Next, we establish a simpler criterion for the existence of factorizations $G_1,\ldots, G_k$ satisfying $d_{G_i}(v)\ge \lfloor d_G(v)/k\rfloor$ for all vertices $v$ (reps. $d_{G_i}(v)\le \lceil d_G(v)/k\rceil$). As an application, we come up with a criterion to determine whether a highly edge-connected graph with $\delta(G)\ge \delta_1+\cdots+ \delta_m$ (resp. $\Delta(G)\le \Delta_1+\cdots+ \Delta_m$) can be edge-decomposed into factors $G_1,\ldots, G_m$ satisfying $\delta(G_i)\ge \delta_i$ (resp. $\Delta(G_i)\le \Delta_i$) for all $i$ with $1\le i \le m$, provided that $\delta_1+\cdots+ \delta_m$ is divisible by an odd number $p$ and $\delta_i\ge p-1\ge 2$ (resp. $\Delta_1+\cdots+ \Delta_m$ is divisible by $p$ and $\Delta_i\ge p-1\ge 2$). For graphs of even order, we replace an odd-edge-connectivity condition. In particular, for the special case $m=2$, we refine the needed odd-edge-connectivity further by giving a sufficient odd-edge-connectivity condition for a graph $G$ to have a partial parity factor $F$ such that for each vertex $v$ with a given parity constraint, $| d_{F}(v)-\varepsilon d_G(v)|< 2$, and for all other vertices $v$, $| d_{F}(v)-\varepsilon d_G(v)|\le 1$, where $\varepsilon $ is a real number and $0< \varepsilon < 1$. Finally we introduce another application on the existence of almost even factorizations of odd-edge-connected graphs.
