Abstract:Pilates is whole body exercise modality which is based on balance and flexibility. Pilates exercise may also have beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease risk factors. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a 10 week Pilates exercise program on body weight, BMI, waist circumference, leptin, hs-CRP and cholesterol profiles in obese middle-aged men. METHODS: Subjects were obese 30-42 year old men (BMI = 25.0-30.0kg/m2). They were classified into a Pilates training group (PT, n=7) and control group (Cont, n=7). Pilates program consisted of upper abdominal curl, roll up, rolling, single leg stretch, criss-crosses, double straight leg stretch, single straight leg stretch, spine stretch forward, single and double leg kick, side up/down kick in parallel and side band, etc. Training was performed 3 day/week for 65 min during the 10 weeks program. Exercise intensity was monitored using heart rate monitors and peak intensity was reached between 50% and 75% heart rate reserve (HRR). Data was analyzed by two way ANOVA with group and period, and then post Hoc test (a=.05) was performed. RESULTS: After 10 weeks of Pilates training, PT significantly decreased body weight (83.2±7.2kg vs. 81.5±6.8kg), BMI (26.9±1.5kg/m2 vs. 26.4±1.3kg/m2), and waist circumstance (91.7±5.0cm vs. 89.3±46cm) (all p<0.01). LDL-C (108.0±20.0mg/dl vs. 89.7±29.3mg/dl) and LDL/HDL ratios (2.39±0.77 vs. 1.84±0.94) of PT were significantly decreased (p<.05) after Pilates training, but total cholesterol and HDL-C were not changed after training. Hs-CRP (0.097±0.048mg/dl vs. 0.049±0.034 mg/dl) and leptin (5.24±1.40ng/ml vs. 3.61±0.74ng.ml) of PT were slightly decreased from baseline but not significant (p>.05). CONCLUSIONS: 10 weeks of Pilates training, which corresponded to 50-75% HRR, was an effective treatment to improve cardiovascular disease risk factors in middle-aged obese men. Further research is warranted to examine the effects of Pilates training on cardiovascular
