Abstract:Selective transformation of carbon dioxide and epoxides into degradable polycarbonates (CO2-based copolymer) has been regarded as a most promising green polymerization process. Although tremendous progress has been made during the past decade, very few successful examples have been reported to synthesize well-defined block copolymers to expand the scope of these green copolymers. Herein, we report a tandem strategy combining two living polymerization techniques, salenCo(III)X-catalyzed styrene oxide SO/CO2 copolymerization and ring-opening polymerization of lactide with DBU (1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene), for the synthesis of poly(styrene carbonate-block-lactide) copolymers. The key to the success of this tandem strategy is the judicious choice of water as the chain transfer and/or chain terminator reagent, which is added at the end of the salenCo(III)X-catalyzed SO/CO2 copolymerization to in situ generate hydroxyl groups at the end of the polymer chains. The resulting polycarbonates with -OH end groups can thus be directly used as macroinitiators to subsequently initiate ring opening polymerization of lac-fide to synthesize the diblock copolymers. Because of the living polymerization nature of both steps in this tandem strategy, we have demonstrated that the diblock copolymers synthesized possess well-defined structures with narrow molecular weight distributions and controllable lengths of both styrene carbonate and lactide blocks.

Abstract:Switchable catalysis, in combination with epoxide-involved ring-opening (co)polymerization, is a powerful technique that can be used to synthesize various oxygen-rich block copolymers. Despite intense research in this field, the sequence-controlled polymerization from epoxide congeners has never been realized due to their similar ring-strain which exerts a decisive influence on the reaction process. Recently, quaternary ammonium (or phosphonium)-containing bifunctional organoboron catalysts have been developed by our group, showing high efficiency for various epoxide conversions. Herein, we, for the first time, report an operationally simple pathway to access well-defined polyether-block-polycarbonate copolymers from mixtures of epoxides by switchable catalysis, which was enabled through thermodynamically and kinetically preferential ring-opening of terminal epoxides or internal epoxides under different atmospheres (CO2 or N2) using one representative bifunctional organoboron catalyst. This strategy shows a broad substrate scope as it is suitable for various combinations of terminal epoxides and internal epoxides, delivering corresponding well-defined block copolymers. NMR, MALDI-TOF, and gel permeation chromatography analyses confirmed the successful construction of polyether-block-polycarbonate copolymers. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations elucidate the reversible selectivity between different epoxides in the presence/absence of CO2. Moreover, by replacing comonomer CO2 with cyclic anhydride, the well-defined polyether-block-polyester copolymers can also be synthesized. This work provides a rare example of sequence-controlled polymerization from epoxide mixtures, broadening the arsenal of switchable catalysis that can produce oxygen-rich polymers in a controlled manner.

Abstract:The copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) and epoxides to produce aliphatic polycarbonates is a burgeoning technology for the large-scale utilization of CO2 and degradable polymeric materials. Even with the wealth of advancements achieved over the past 50 years on this green technology, many challenges remain, including the use of metal-containing catalysts for polymerization, the removal of the chromatic metal residue after polymerization, and the limited practicable epoxides, especially for those containing electron-withdrawing groups. Herein, we provide kinds of pinwheel-shaped tetranuclear organoboron catalysts for epichlorohydrin/CO2 copolymerization with >99% polymer selectivity and quantitative CO2 uptake (>99% carbonate linkages) under mild conditions (25-40 degrees C, 25 bar of CO2). The produced poly(chloropropylene carbonate) has the highest molecular weight of 36.5 kg/mol and glass transition temperature of 45.4 degrees C reported to date. The energy difference (Delta E-a = 60.7 kJ/mol) between the cyclic carbonate and polycarbonate sheds light on the robust performance of our metal-free catalyst. Control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed a cyclically sequential copolymerization mechanism. The metal-free feature, high catalytic performance under mild conditions, and no trouble with chromaticity for the produced polymers imply that our catalysts are practical candidates to advance the CO2-based polycarbonates.

Abstract:The carbonylative polymerization of epoxides provides a promising but challenging strategy to synthesize polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) which are of high commercial value in the field of biomedical materials and engineering plastics. Herein, a suite of well-defined bifunctional organoboron-cobalt catalysts, featuring simple preparation, high yields, and low metal content, are exploited for the carbonylative polymerization of epoxides to PHA oligomers. The organoboron-cobalt-mediated carbonylative polymerization exhibits high polyester selectivity (over 95%, four epoxide examples), and the obtained PHAs have more than 99% ester linkages on the polymer main chain. Detailed investigations based on in situ reactIR and H-1 NMR analyses first found the concurrence of the direct alternating copolymerization of epoxides/CO, the ring expansion carbonylation of the epoxides to afford beta-lactones, and the in situ homopolymerization of beta-lactones under a single catalyst. This rare discovery provides a fundamentally different mechanism in the preparation of PHAs from CO/epoxides, extending the arsenal of catalytic systems that can copolymerize CO with epoxides.
Highly Efficient Enzymatic Catalysis for Cyclocarbonate Polymerization

Abstract:In this study, we developed a metal-free biosynthetic strategy of enzymatic polymerization to fabricate aliphatic poly(pentamethylene carbonate) (PPMC). Novozym-435 lipase showed considerably high catalytic efficiency, and high molecular weights (Mn) of up to 6.0 × 104 g mol−1 were readily achieved through the ring-opening polymerization of cyclobis(pentamethylene carbonate). The reaction parameters, including monomer concentration and lipase concentration, were examined. It seemed that little polymer degradation occurred during the polymerization, which would happen in the case of organometallic catalysis. In vitro enzymatic degradation tests indicate that the carbonate groups may not be sensitive to catalysis from the lipases of porcine pancreas and Candida rugosa (AYS). PPMC was found to possess higher flexibility and tenacity, relative to poly(trimethylene carbonate). Thermogravimetrical analyses suggest that the chemical structure of poly(alkylene carbonate)s exerts a significant influence on their thermal stability and decomposition mechanism. PPMC with a high Mn of up to 6.0 × 104 g mol−1 can be readily afforded under the catalysis of an immobilized lipase from Candida antarctica (Novozym-435). The result sounds attractive, as presently the low catalytic efficiency is known as the main restriction for the industrialization of enzyme catalysis.

Abstract:The alternating copolymerization of one-carbon (C1) building blocks including carbon dioxide (CO2) and its sulfur analogues of carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) with epoxides afford new copolymers, namely polycarbonates and polythiocarbonates, with tailored chain structures and properties. This review mainly focuses on the recent advances in C1-involved copolymerization via heterogeneous catalysis of zinc-cobalt(III) double metal cyanide complex [Zn–Co(III) DMCC] catalyst. The chemistry of zinc-hydroxyl bond of Zn–Co(III) DMCC is responsible to the copolymerization of these C1 monomers with epoxides through the formation of C–O (S) bond. The syntheses of CO2-based copolymers with various topologies are also reviewed in detail. The utilization of CO2, COS and CS2 as monomers for polymer synthesis have significant contributions to the sustainable use of renewable resources.

Abstract:A novel metal-free and protecting-group-free synthesis method to prepare telechelic thiol-functionalized polyesters is developed by employing organocatalysis. A scope of Brønsted acids, including trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (1), HCl.Et2O (2), diphenyl phosphate (3), γ-resorcylic acid (4) and methanesulfonic acid (5), are evaluated to promote ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone with unprotected 6-mercapto-1-hexanol as the multifunctional initiator. Among them, diphenyl phosphate (3) exhibits great chemoselectivity and efficiency, which allows for simply synthesis of thiol-terminated poly(ε-caprolactone) with near-quantitative thiol fidelity, full monomer conversion, controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. Kinetic study confirms living/controlled nature of the organocatalyzed chemoselective polymerizations. Density functional theory calculation illustrates that the chemoselectivity of diphenyl phosphate (3) is attributed to the stronger bifunctional activation of monomer and initiator/chain-end as well as the lower energy in hydroxyl pathway than thiol one. Moreover, series of tailor-made telechelic thiol-terminated poly(δ-valerolactone) and block copolymers are efficiently generated under mild conditions.

Abstract:We report a new synthetic methodology for poly(ester amide)s by anionic ring-opening copolymerization of N-sulfonyl aziridines and cyclic anhydrides. Phosphazenes organocatalysts have been found to promote a highly-active, controlled, and selective alternating copolymerization in the absence of any competitive side reaction (zwitterionic mechanism and exchange transacylations). Mechanistic studies have shown first-order dependence of the copolymerization rate in N-sulfonyl aziridines and phosphazenes, and zero-order in cyclic anhydrides. This one-pot methodology leads not only to homopolymers but also to poly(ester amide)-based block copolymers. Two catalytic cycles involving ring-opening alternating copolymerization of N-sulfonyl aziridines with cyclic anhydrides and ring-opening polymerization of N-sulfonyl aziridines have been proposed to explain the one pot synthesis of poly(ester amide)-based homo- and block copolymers.

Abstract:Abstract Precisely controlling macromolecular stereochemistry and sequences is a powerful strategy for manipulating polymer properties. Controlled synthetic routes to prepare degradable polyester, polycarbonate, and polyether are of recent interest due to the need for sustainable materials as alternatives to petrochemical-based polyolefins. Enantioselective ring-opening polymerization and ring-opening copolymerization of racemic monomers offer access to stereoregular polymers, specifically enantiopure polymers that form stereocomplexes with improved physicochemical and mechanical properties. Here, we highlight the state-of-the-art of this polymerization chemistry that can produce microstructure-defined polymers. In particular, the structures and performances of various homogeneous enantioselective catalysts are presented. Trends and future challenges of such chemistry are discussed.

Abstract:Polyester is a kind of polymer composed of ester bond-linked polybasic acids and polyol. This type of polymer has a wide range of applications in various industries, such as automotive, furniture, coatings, packaging, and biomedical. The traditional process of synthesizing polyester mainly uses metal catalyst polymerization under high-temperature. This condition may have problems with metal residue and undesired side reactions. As an alternative, enzyme-catalyzed polymerization is evolving rapidly due to the metal-free residue, satisfactory biocompatibility, and mild reaction conditions. This article presented the reaction modes of enzyme-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization and enzyme-catalyzed polycondensation and their combinations, respectively. In addition, the article also summarized how lipase-catalyzed the polymerization of polyester, which includes (i) the distinctive features of lipase, (ii) the lipase-catalyzed polymerization and its mechanism, and (iii) the lipase stability under organic solvent and high-temperature conditions. In addition, this article also focused on the advantages and disadvantages of enzyme-catalyzed polyester synthesis under different solvent systems, including organic solvent systems, solvent-free systems, and green solvent systems. The challenges of enzyme optimization and process equipment innovation for further industrialization of enzyme-catalyzed polyester synthesis were also discussed in this article.

Despite advances in polymer chemistry, attempts at controlling the chain-growth polymerization of muconate esters remain unexplored. Here we show that dialkyl muconates can be rapidly polymerized by organocatalyzed group transfer polymerization (O-GTP). O-GTP is conducted to completion at room temperature in toluene within a few minutes, using 1-ethoxy-1-(trimethylsiloxy)-1,3-butadiene (ETSB) as initiator and 1-tert-butyl-4,4,4-tris(dimethylamino)-2,2-bis[tris(dimethylamino)-phosphoranylidenamino]-25,45 catenadi(phosphazene) (P4-t-Bu) as catalyst. Chain extension experiments and synthesis of all muconate-type block copolymers can also be achieved. Furthermore, polymuconates are amenable to facile post-polymerization modification reactions. This is showcased through the hydrolysis of the ester side chains leading to well-defined poly(muconic acid), and by epoxidation of the C=C double bonds of the main chain. Last but not least, these internal alkene groups can be selectively cleaved by ozonolysis, demonstrating the upcyclability of polymuconates under oxidative conditions. This work demonstrates that polymuconates constitute a unique platform of bio-based polymers, easily modifiable in addition to being chemically degradable under user friendly experimental conditions.

Abstract:The incorporation of heteroatom-containing weak bonds along polymer backbones has become a pop-ular tool to accelerate degradation. Many methods have already been reported for the synthesis of degradable heteroatom-containing polymers based mainly on conventional step-growth polymerization and chain-growth ring-opening polymerization (ROP). In recent years, ring-opening metathesis polymer-ization (ROMP) has evolved as an emerging approach for the synthesis of various types of degradable polymers, from carbocyclic norbornene derivatives to heterocyclic olefin monomers. Classic ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts exhibit not only high reactivity to C = C double bonds but also high tolerance to po-lar functional groups. Hence, a rich range of functional groups can be incorporated into cyclic olefin monomers and then transferred to the polymer backbones. This review covers the synthesis of the various heteroatom-containing degradable (co)polymers via ROMP, including poly(thio)acetals/polyketals, polyorthoesters, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyphosphoesters/polyphosphoamidates, poly(enol ether)s, poly(silyl ether)s, polydisulfides, polyketones, polyacylsilanes, polyamides, and polyureas, as well as their degradable mechanisms under different conditions. Last but not least, these internal alkene groups can be selectively cleaved by ozonolysis, demonstrating the upcyclability of polymuconates under oxidative conditions. This work demonstrates that polymuconates constitute a unique platform of bio-based polymers, easily modifiable in addition to being chemically degradable under user friendly experimental conditions.
