Abstract:This paper presents a review of Michael Long’s new book Problems in SLA while at the same time making comments on his argument on the major issues of evaluation of SLA theories, research, and language teaching. The authors argue, in this process, that the language teaching research should take a didactic view towards the SLA theories. It should acquire input from them and verify its effectiveness in providing methodological principles as solutions to the problems in practice. Secondly, the controversy between psychocognitive and socio cultural theories will not be solved by Laudan’s theory as recommended by Long because either of them is not perfect in explaining the empirical data. Thirdly, the authors point out the problems in the research, such as the age issue, interaction, recast, and task-based teaching reflects fundamental differences in views of the nature of language learning process in the two opposing theories. Finally the authors, in conclusion, suggest the future of the SLA theory probably lies in what Lantoff (2005) suggested for a socio-cognitive perspective.
