Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) in arid and semiarid regions is a crucial part of global soil carbon pools and plays an important role in the study of global carbon cycle. Soils under three vegetations in Helan Mountain of Ningxia were collected for the determi- nation of SOC content and the calculation of SOC density. The results showed that: SOC content decreased with the increase of soil depth; the highest SOC density was found in soils under Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. (11.30±0.36 kg·m-2), followed by soils under Ul- mus glaucescens Franch. (4.34±0.13 kg·m-2), and the lowest SOC density was found in soils under shrub (2.50±0.07 kg·m-2); The percentage of SOC stock in the surface layer (0~5 cm) to total SOC stock in the whole profile was 10.32%±0.07%, 23.43%±0.69% and 26.80%±0.20%, respectively. Soils under Ulmus glaucescens Franch. and shrub were poorly-developed with comparatively higher SOC stock in the surface layer; The total SOC stock was comparatively higher in well-developed soils. It’s very important to protect vegetations, so as to reduce CO2 emission from soil surface layer and to slow down global warming.
