Abstract:Over the past 20 years, there has been considerable progress in the development of research in the micro-/nanorobotics area. Through major, rapid, investment in the field and the use of, for example, correlation techniques, many successes have been seen in both theoretical and experimental work, which have had applications in emerging areas such as clinical medicine. As a result, this article aims to introduce and review some of the most influential and advanced research work carried out over the past few years. To do so, the approach taken has been to categorize micro-/nanorobots by their propulsion modes, analyzing their advantages and drawbacks in detail, looking at medical applications such as such as the delivery of medical supplies, medical imaging and so on. Additionally, the article looks at future directions in micro-/nanorobot development, including important areas such as biocompatibility (as well as biodegradability), autonomy and accurate operation in the complex and dynamic environment of the human body. Abstract:Since the advent of ingestible temperature sensors and capsule endoscopes, rapid advances in electronics, robotics, nanotechnology, and material sciences have opened the door for the development of novel medical ingestible robots. The untethered robots provide direct, non-invasive access to the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Furthermore, the tissues, gases, and fluids of the gastrointestinal lumen contain a multitude of biomarkers indicative of gut diseases and health. Ingestible medical robots equipped with advanced imaging and sensing techniques can enable the diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, while providing a better pathophysiological understanding of gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, various robotic actuation mechanisms in the macro- and microscale can realize enhanced drug delivery and surgical interventions for the treatment of diseases. In this paper, an overview of recent advances in ingestible robots toward imaging, sensing, drug delivery, and surgical applications in the GI tract is provided. Key challenges and strategies for the development of novel ingestible robots and future directions of ingestible robots toward precision medicine are also discussed.

Abstract:According to the current research on autonomic gastro-intestinal robot system,a new intestinal microrobot system is designed.The robot moves in the inchworm locomotive mode,and is composed of three individual sections,namely clamping,extend-retract and clamping structure(short for C-ER-C),driven by DC motors.The robot with modular design includes clamping structure,extend-retract structure,circuit control section and wireless power section.A new robot structure is theoretically explored,the design of circuit control section and constitute of wireless power supply section are described.The diameter of the ultimate robot is about 14 mm,and the overall length is about 61 mm.Through the experiments of PVC tube and in-vitro intestine of pig, the robot can stably move forward,backward and stop.The inchworm locomotive robot can work effectively in the gastro-intestinal tract.

Abstract:Miniature robot for colonoscopy is a hot research with the development of Minimally Invasive Surgery(MIS).In this paper,a novel micro robotic colonoscopy based on squirm of earthworm is described.Its diameter and length are 9.5mm and 120mm respectively.The robot is driven by a linear DC motor designed and manufactured by us.Paper first introduces the prototype,locomotion principle and control system in detail.A mechanical model relative to slope is built to study the robotic motion ability in the complex and viscoelastic colon environment.Experiments about creeping ability in slope are performed to verify mathematic expressions.At last,In-Vitro experiments in fresh colon of pig are performed.Researches show this kind of robotic colonoscopy can propel itself freely and reliably in soft viscoelastic colon.This study laid the foundation for the clinic application of the micro robotic colonoscopy.

Abstract:For diagnosing the colon's pathologies micro-invasively or non-invasively actively, an autonomous prototype of the earthworm-like robot for colonoscopy was designed according with the principle of the bionics and manufactured using precision process technology. In-Vitro experiments in pig colon were made. This micro robot for colonoscopy was drove directly by electromagnetic linear driver. The mobile cells were joined with two degree-of-freedom joints and the whole body was flexible. The direction of movement and the angle of imaging can be controlled by the shape memory alloy (SMA). In experiments, locomotion efficient was analyzed carefully. In-vitro experiments in pig colon demonstrated that the micro robot can navigate though the colon by itself reliably and freely, which was useful to the application of robot for colonoscopy in the clinic

Abstract:This paper reports a new autonomous robot prototype for diagnosing the colon's pathologies micro-invasively or non-invasively. Mechanism was designed based on squirm principle of earthworm and manufactured using precision process technology. Theoretically, acting force model between the colon and robot was created and equation about locomotion efficiency was deduced from one-dimensional special case of two-dimensional viscoelastic strain energy function. Researches demonstrated that locomotion efficiency was determined by critical step, which was influenced by factors such as dimension of driving mechanism, physical characteristics of colon. More locomotion efficiency could be got, smaller critical step is. In-vitro experiments in fresh pig colon are made at room-temperature. Results showed that micro robot can pass though the colon by itself reliably and freely.

Abstract:Intestinal-related diseases all around the world are increasing nowadays, and gradually become stubborn diseases threatening human health, and even lives. Diagnosis methods have attracted more and more attention. This article concerns a non-invasive way, a novel micro-robot, to diagnose intestinal diseases. This proposed micro-robot is a swallowable device, 14 mm in diameter, like a capsule. In order to make it possible for the micro-robot to move forward, backward, or anchor itself at a suspicious lesion point in the intestine with different lumen diameter sections, two key mechanisms have been proposed. One is an expanding mechanism with two-layer folded legs for anchoring. The designed expanding mechanism could realize a large variable diameter ratio, upwards of 3.43. In addition, a pair of specific annular gears instead of a traditional pinion drive is devised not only saving limited space, but also reducing energy loss. The other mechanism is a telescoping mechanism, possessing a self-locking lead screw nut system, which is used to obtain axial motion of the micro-robot. Then, the kinematics and dynamics of the micro-robot are analyzed. After that, the following experiments, including force tests and locomotion tests, are constructed. A good match is found between the theoretical results and the experimental data. Finally, in vitro experiments are performed with a prototype to verify the safety and reliability of the proposed micro-robot in porcine intestine.

Abstract:For the purpose of a noninvasive diagnostic method on intestine,an endoscope micro-robot for the active locomotion in the gastrointestinal(GI) track is described.The micro-robot utilizes a DC motor,through multi-stage gear transmission,and the screw-nut to achieve straight-line drive and output inchworm robot movement with sequence in time.Also,the structure,motion mechanism,and movement feasibility of the micro-robot are discussed.In order to investigate the motion feasibility of the device,a set of experiments are carried out.Experiment results demonstrate that the device can provide a smooth and reliable force which can meet the needs of movement in GI.

Abstract:Flexible endoscopy is the gold standard modality for diagnosis and therapeutic intervention of various colorectal conditions. A high bar is currently set for any new technology to replace the current modern colonoscope, but limitations do exist. For a robotic system to gain acceptance, ideally a clear advantage over the established standard needs to be demonstrated. The application of robotic technology inspired by locomotion observed in animals has been demonstrated in many fields including colonoscopy. A myriad of novel concepts has been proposed, which can overcome the anatomical and technical challenges. This review discusses novel and innovative examples of bioinspired robotic locomotion in the colon with a detailed comparison of studies alongside separating the discussion by animal sections of insect, marine and reptile locomotion. We also discuss the current advantages and challenges a bioinspired robot will bring to the colon. Bioinspired robotics in the colon is an exciting field of research with the potential to improve upon current existing high standards of practice in colonoscopy. By addressing areas that the conventional colonoscope is weaker in, studies are demonstrating improvement upon current limitations of standard practice and providing an insight into new methods of engineering and fabrication. Focus on the technological, mechanical and regulatory barriers is key to achieve acceptance into standard practice and will allow the aspiration of a safe, low discomfort, low cost and potentially fully autonomous robotic colonoscope to be not too distant in the future of colonoscopy.

Recent Patents on Mechanical Engineering

Abstract:Background: Currently, there are about twenty percent of the subjects who feel pain and become uncomfortable while they are in the middle of the process of bowel disease examination by colonoscopy. Within the examination, the attending physician needs the assistance of nurses to complete the operation, which is extremely inconvenient. And there is still the chance of being hurt or infected by corrosive intestinal juice. Therefore, how to improve the efficiency of diagnosis, ensure the safety of operation, and reduce the pain of patients are the current research hotspots in the field of colonoscopy. Objective: The study aimed to provide an overview of the existing colonoscopy robots and introduce their classification and characteristics. Methods: This paper reviews various productions and patents related to the colonoscopy robot. The structural characteristics, differences and applications of the typical colonoscopy robot are also introduced. Results: The auxiliary colonoscopy robot and the active flexible colonoscopy robot were compared and analyzed, and the typical characteristics were concluded. The main problems in colonoscopy robot’s development were analyzed, and the development trend is foreseen. The current and future research works on the productions and patents on colonoscopy robots are discussed. Conclusion: Colonoscopy robot is helpful for reducing the doctor’s efforts while performing labor operation. It gives a more clear vision and offers an excellent interactive interface to make man-machine conversation easy. With the continuous improvement of technology, especially in the field of artificial intelligence and imaging processing technology, colonoscopy robot has been found to be more stable, comfortable, humanized, intelligent and secure.

Abstract:In recent years, an intelligent noninvasive endoscope has been felt necessary for early diagnosis of malignant tumor in gastrointestine (GI). It is our purpose to develop a microwireless robotic endoscope to examine the human GI. The presented robot's diameter and length is 10 and 190 mm, respectively. A locomotion principle based on biomimetic earthworm is adopted for a higher adaptability to the GI. The robot is composed of three linear driving cells. A micromotor, a reducer, and a microscrew pair mechanism are integrated into each cell. Multijoints are used to connect every two driving cells for robot's high flexibility. The robot's energy is continuously supplied in real time by an energy transmitting system based on electromagnetic coupling. Experiments on the energy transmission and locomotion are performed to test the power transferring volume and locomotion effect in GI. The experiments indicate that the minimum received power, 400 mW, is obtained in a cylindrical space with 200 mm diameter and 200 mm length. In vitro experiments in a pig intestine indicate that this robot can move forward or backward effectively. This paper provides a good prototype for the deeper research on locomotion theory and energy transferring technology in vivo in future.

Biodegradable Microrobots and Their Biomedical Applications: A Review

Abstract:During recent years, microrobots have drawn extensive attention owing to their good controllability and great potential in biomedicine. Powered by external physical fields or chemical reactions, these untethered microdevices are promising candidates for in vivo complex tasks, such as targeted delivery, imaging and sensing, tissue engineering, hyperthermia, and assisted fertilization, among others. However, in clinical use, the biodegradability of microrobots is significant for avoiding toxic residue in the human body. The selection of biodegradable materials and the corresponding in vivo environment needed for degradation are increasingly receiving attention in this regard. This review aims at analyzing different types of biodegradable microrobots by critically discussing their advantages and limitations. The chemical degradation mechanisms behind biodegradable microrobots and their typical applications are also thoroughly investigated. Furthermore, we examine their feasibility and deal with the in vivo suitability of different biodegradable microrobots in terms of their degradation mechanisms; pathological environments; and corresponding biomedical applications, especially targeted delivery. Ultimately, we highlight the prevailing obstacles and perspective solutions, ranging from their manufacturing methods, control of movement, and degradation rate to insufficient and limited in vivo tests, that could be of benefit to forthcoming clinical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Background Wireless capsule endoscopes for diagnosis and treatment in the gastrointestinal tract face the common problem of active actuation. To tackle this difficulty, a non-invasive intestinal bio-robot system with active actuation based on nerve stimulation was developed. Methods This intestinal inspection system utilized a natural organism—the mud eel—to serve as the locomotion mechanism, and it was controlled by a LabVIEW-programmed pulse generator. The exterior control unit was able to actively drive and remotely control the navigation and site-specific anchoring of the organism. Results Through in vitro stimulation experiments, a method of controlling the organism’s forward motion was obtained: when the organism was stimulated at the tail, it moved forward at a relatively fast speed and with high repeatability. The stimulator parameters were as follows: amplitude 1.85 μA, frequency 2 Hz, pulse duration 500 μs. Conclusions Since this is a preliminary study, considerable work remains to be done. However, the results could provide a solid theoretical basis for further research toward producing a practical intestinal bio-robot for the diagnosis and treatment of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract:In order to improve the reliability, safety and whole digestive applicability of the gastrointestinal microrobot (GMR), a novel inchworm-like GMR is proposed in this paper. The expanding mechanism of the robot adopts an overlapping expanding arm structure. This structure increases the variable diameter ratio (ratio of fully expanded diameter to fully folded diameter) of the robot to 3.3, making the robot more applicable to the intestines in various parts of the human body. The mechanical model of the expanding arm is established, and the expanding force at different expanding radii is obtained. And then the expanding force is tested by a force test platform. The force test results: the maximum expanding force is 6.5 N, and the minimum expanding force is 1.3 N. The trend of the experimental and theoretical values is the same, and the experimental value is less than the theoretical value. A position limiting device based on Hall sensor is designed, which detects whether the mechanism reaches the limit position by non-contact method. This device alleviates the problem of sharp voltage drop caused by motor stall and improves the stability of the control circuit. The results of the Hall-type position limiting device (HPLD) testing show that the working currents of the expanding mechanism and the telescoping mechanism with HPLD are respectively 0.066A and 0.110A, and the robot control circuit works stably. Finally, the robot is tested in the intestine of the living pig, and the safety and reliability of the robot are verified. However, due to the decrease of the efficiency of wireless power transmission in vivo experiments and the change of the position of the receiving coil relative to the transmitting coil, sometimes the power supply is insufficient.

Abstract:A flexible locomotion system is proposed to improve the active locomotion ability of gastrointestinal microrobots in the minimally invasive diagnosis.The locomotion system simulating inchworm-like locomotion comprises a flexible locomotion mechanism and a drive mechanism.The flexible locomotion mechanism is mainly composed of radial balloon feet and an axial telescopic pushrod.In addition,a developed universal joint is used to join two cavities of the microrobot to improve its locomotion flexibility.The drive mechanism uses the nylon wires to actuate the bellows bump for the balloon feet and stimulate the telescopic pushrod for the microrobot to realize the flexible drive.The developed microrobot prototype shows its diameter in 12.2 mm,length in 78 mm and the weight in 14.8 g,and realizes the maximum clamping diameter of 20.2 mm and the maximum axial stroke of 16 mm.The experiments show that the wire drive mechanism can provide the maximum force of 0.67 N for the bellows bump and 0.65 N for the axial pushrod,respectively.The microrobot prototype can move in the rigid plexiglass tube with different angles,and the average speeds in the horizontal and vertical tubes are 0.38 mm/s and 0.25 mm/s,respectively.In addition,it can move in the curving plastic tube with a minimum curvature radius of 49.3 mm and present an effective locomotion in vitro intestinal tract.It can be seen that the flexible locomotion system provides an effective and safe locomotion case for gastrontestinal microrobots.

Abstract:Surgical robots are an important branch of medical robots. This paper analyzes the current development status of surgical robots from the perspective of application field classification, summarizes the challenges of various surgical robots such as laparoscopic surgical robots, orthopedic surgical robots, vascular intervention surgical robots, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), and other specialized surgical robots, and predicts and prospects the future development of surgical robots, which provides intelligent support for domestic companies to develop the surgical robot industry. The research results indicate that surgical robot technology is in a period of rapid development, which has helped improve surgical accuracy and treatment effectiveness.

Abstract:Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has become one of the most important research areas in the field of medical engineering. Robotic colonoscopy is a typical medical procedure that complies with the requirements of MIS. In this paper, a new novel miniature robot for intestinal inspection based on the earthworm is described; its diameter and length are 7.5 mm and 120 mm respectively. The micro robot is driven by a DC motor which has good performance and sufficient power. In this paper the structure and locomotion mechanism of this robot are introduced; the mechanical model is built; and simulation is carried out. The control system and software design are also discussed in detail. Some actuating characteristic experiments have been performed, where the micro robot creeps in declining rubber tubes. The experimental results are in accord with simulation results, and show that this kind of robot can move reliably in horizontal and certain declining tubes. This research has laid a foundation for the application of the miniature robot endoscope.
