Abstract:The bis(chelate) complex [Rh(P O)2][BPh4] (2; P O= eta2(O,P)-chelated (C6H11)2PCH2CH2OCH3 ligand) reacts with acyl chlorides RC(O)CI to give the acyl complexes [Rh(P O)2C(O)-RCI][BPh4] (4a-e; R = CH3 (a),C2H5 (b), i-C3H7 (c), Ph (d), C2H4Ph (e)). The structure of 4c, showing a distorted-octahedral configuration, was elucidated by an X-ray structural analysis. 4c crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2/n with Z = 4. The cell dimensions are a = 21.881(4) angstrom, b = 10.303(2) angstrom, c = 26.516(5) angstrom, and beta = 100.91(3)-degrees. The reductive-elimination process of 4a proceeds via a reverse methyl migration to give Ga, followed by elimination of CH3Cl from 6a to form the carbonyl rhodium(I) complex [Rh(CO)(P approximately O)(P O)][BPh4] (8;P approximately O = eta1(P)-coordinated (C6H11)2PCH2CH20CH3 ligand). [ClRh(P approximately O)2(CO)] (9) is observed as the final product. Both Rh-O bonds in 2 are cleaved by 5-bar pressure of carbon monoxide, resulting in the formation of the tricarbonylrhodium(I) complex [Rh(P approximately O)2(CO)3][BPh4] (3). Upon bubbling argon through a CH2Cl2 solution of 3, [(OC)2Rh(P approximately O)2][BPh4] (cis-5 or trans-7) is favored compared to the monocarbonyl species 8.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:This paper describes a highly efficient and facile transformation of substituted oxazolidin-2-ones to methylene-bridged 3,3'-bis(oxazolidin- 2-one) derivatives in a mixture solvent of CH2Cl2 (DCM) and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of NaH at ambient temperature. Isotopic labeling experiments indicated that the C of the bridged methylene group was derived from CH2Cl2 instead of DMF and other unknown substances in the NaH reagent (60% dispersion in mineral oil).

Abstract:closo-Boranes and closo-carboranes, clusters with a closed-cage structure, exhibit remarkable inertness and are unique components of products with applications in areas such as medicinal chemistry, fluorescence and materials science. Herein, we report the first transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of the mono-closo-decaborate cluster [1-CB9H10]- by regioselective B-H activation. Using terminal alkenes bearing a wide range of functional groups, dehydrogenative coupling under mild conditions leads to B2/3-dialkenylated products, as verified by X-ray crystallography and NMR studies. This substitution pattern has not been accessible by other methods and enables the straightforward synthesis of new derivatives of the {CB9} cluster.

Abstract:The Rh(II)-carbene reaction is dramatically affected by the neighboring substituents. If the neighboring substituent is an OH group, a1,2-H shift is the exclusive pathway. If it is an OAc group, a 1,2-acetoxy migration is observed. If it is p-toluenesulfonyl group, 1,3 and 1,5-C-H insertion are the major pathways, and the 1,2-H shift is completely suppressed. If the adjacent substituent is a trichloroacetyl amino group, 1,5-C-H insertion competes with the 1,2-hydride shift, and no 1,3-C-H insertion can be observed. Both electronic and steric factors are responsible for the switching of the Rh(II)-carbene reaction pathway. The highly stereoselective 1,5-C-H insertions in Rh(II)-catalyzed reaction of alpha-diazocarbonyl compounds, bearing beta-trichloroacetylamino substituent, can be utilized as a novel way to synthesize five-membered cyclic beta-amino acid derivatives.

Abstract:Chelation‐assisted C6‐selective acylmethylation and carboxymethylation of 2‐pyridones with diazo carbonyl compounds under [Cp*RhCl 2 ] 2 /AgSbF 6 catalysis have been developed. Deesterificative C6‐acylmethylation of 2‐pyridones with diazo tert‐butyl ester compounds proceeds effectively with the use of HOAc additive and hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) solvent, whereas switching to NaOAc additive and MeOH solvent enables efficient deacylative C6‐carboxymethylation of 2‐pyridones with alkyl 2‐diazo‐3‐oxobutanoates. The procedures are characterized by excellent regioselectivity, high efficiency, broad substrate scope, wide functional group compatibility and gram‐scalability. Preliminary mechanistic experiments are conducted to gain insights into the reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:A novel DABCO-catalyzed Ireland-Claisen [3,3]-rearrangement of allylic acrylates to give alpha-methylene-gamma,delta-unsaturated carboxylic acids in the presence of an excess of TMSCl and DBU in refluxing acetonitrile was developed. The protocol provides an easy entry to alpha-methylene-gamma,delta-unsaturated carboxylic acids from allylic alcohols in good yields.

Abstract:[Cp*RhCl2](2) is the most prevailing catalyst employed for rhodium-catalyzed chelation-assisted C-H/C-H cross-coupling reactions due to the special ligand effect of Cp*. In this article, a novel concept of using a simple inorganic rhodium salt, RhCl3 center dot 3H(2)O, as the catalyst by taking advantage of in situ pi-coordination to Rh with a (hetero)-aromatic reaction component to stabilize Rh intermediates is proposed and evaluated. Our studies not only prove the feasibility of this concept but also disclose a novel 2-fold C-H/C-H cross-coupling reaction of N-(hetero)-arylimidazolium salts with various (hetero)arenes to access water-soluble, fluorescent, cationic, and planar polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules, in which RhCl3 center dot 3H(2)O outperforms [Cp*RhCl2](2). Mechanistic experiments and DFT calculations reveal that this successive quadruple C-H activation reaction consists of two different C-H activation modes, i.e., concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) and oxidative addition. Notably, this is the first report of a C-H bond activation via oxidative addition to Rh-I in a bi(hetero)aryl formation with hydrogen evolution. Finally, the different ligand electrochemical parameters of neutral (hetero)arenes and anionic Cp* are used to explain the different catalytic behaviors of RhCl3 center dot 3H(2)O and [CP *RhCl2](2).
