Abstract:In this paper the relationship between the Ricci curvature and the fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are studied. We give an estimate of the first Betti number of a compact Finsler manifold. Two finiteness theorems for fundamental groups of compact Finsler manifolds are proved. Moreover, the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds with almost-nonnegative Ricci curvature are considered.

Abstract:Finsler manifolds are differentiable manifolds equipped with Riemannian metrics without the quadratic restriction. In this paper, some recent developments and new results on curvatures and fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are summarized briefly. The contents contain the growth of fundamental groups, the entropy of manifolds and fundamental groups, the first Betti number and the finiteness of fundamental groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the first Aeppli-Chern class for complex manifolds and show that the ( 1 , 1 ) (1,1) -component of the curvature 2 2 -form of the Levi-Civita connection on the anti-canonical line bundle represents this class. We systematically investigate the relationship between a variety of Ricci curvatures on Hermitian manifolds and the background Riemannian manifolds. Moreover, we study non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds by using the first Aeppli-Chern class and the Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics. In particular, we construct explicit Levi-Civita Ricci-flat metrics on Hopf manifolds S 2 n − 1 × S 1 \mathbb {S}^{2n-1}\times \mathbb {S}^1 . We also construct a smooth family of Gauduchon metrics on a compact Hermitian manifold such that the metrics are in the same first Aeppli-Chern class, and their first Chern-Ricci curvatures are the same and non-negative, but their Riemannian scalar curvatures are constant and vary smoothly between negative infinity and a positive number. In particular, it shows that Hermitian manifolds with non-negative first Chern class can admit Hermitian metrics with strictly negative Riemannian scalar curvature.

Abstract:On Hermitian manifolds, the second Ricci curvature tensors of various metric connections are closely related to the geometry of Hermitian manifolds. By refining the Bochner formulas for any Hermitian complex vector bundle (and Riemannian real vector bundle) with an arbitrary metric connection over a compact Hermitian manifold, we can derive various vanishing theorems for Hermitian manifolds and complex vector bundles by the second Ricci curvature tensors. We will also introduce a natural geometric flow on Hermitian manifolds by using the second Ricci curvature tensor.

Abstract:For a Gromov-Hausdorff convergent sequence of closed manifolds $M_i^n\overset{GH}\longrightarrow X$ with $\mathrm{Ric}\ge-(n-1)$, $\mathrm{diam}(M_i)\le D$, and $\mathrm{vol}(M_i)\ge v>0$, we study the relation between $\pi_1(M_i)$ and $X$. It was known before that there is a surjective homomorphism $\phi_i:\pi_1(M_i)\to \pi_1(X)$ by the work of Pan-Wei. In this paper, we construct a surjective homomorphism from the interior of the effective regular set in $X$ back to $M_i$, that is, $\psi_i:\pi_1(\mathcal{R}_{\epsilon,\delta}^\circ)\to \pi_1(M_i)$. These surjective homomorphisms $\phi_i$ and $\psi_i$ are natural in the sense that their composition $\phi_i \circ \psi_i$ is exactly the homomorphism induced by the inclusion map $\mathcal{R}_{\epsilon,\delta}^\circ \hookrightarrow X$.

On the topology of manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between geometry and topology is a central theme in Riemannian geometry. We establish two results on the fundamental groups of open (complete and noncompact) $n$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth. First, we show that the fundamental group of such a manifold contains a subgroup $\mathbb{Z}^k$ of finite index, where $0\le k\le n-1$. Second, we prove that if the Ricci curvature is positive everywhere, then the fundamental group is finite. The proofs are based on an analysis of the equivariant asymptotic geometry of successive covering spaces and a plane/halfplane rigidity result for RCD spaces.

Abstract:For any complete n-dim Riemannian manifold Mn with nonnegative Ricci curvature, Kapovitch and Wilking proved that any finitely generated subgroup of the fundamental group π1(Mn) can be generated by C(n) generators. Inspired by their work, we give a quantitative proof of the above theorem and show that C(n)≤nn20n. Our main tools are quantitative Cheeger-Colding's almost splitting theory, and the squeeze lemma for covering groups between two Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature.

Abstract:Generalizing the foundational work of Grove and Searle, the second author proved upper bounds on the ranks of isometry groups of closed Riemannian manifolds with positive intermediate Ricci curvature and established some topological rigidity results in the case of maximal symmetry rank and positive second intermediate Ricci curvature. Here, we recover even stronger topological rigidity, including results for higher intermediate Ricci curvatures and for manifolds with non-trivial fundamental groups.

Abstract:Let $M$ be an open (complete and non-compact) manifold with $\mathrm{Ric}\ge 0$ and escape rate not $1/2$. It is known that under these conditions, the fundamental group $\pi_1(M)$ has a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent subgroup $\mathcal{N}$ of finite index, as long as $\pi_1(M)$ is an infinite group. We show that the nilpotency step of $\mathcal{N}$ must be reflected in the asymptotic geometry of the universal cover $\widetilde{M}$, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of an isometric $\mathbb{R}$-orbit: there exist an asymptotic cone $(Y,y)$ of $\widetilde{M}$ and a closed $\mathbb{R}$-subgroup $L$ of the isometry group of $Y$ such that its orbit $Ly$ has Hausdorff dimension at least the nilpotency step of $\mathcal{N}$. This resolves a question raised by Wei and the author.

A generalization of the Perelman gluing theorem and applications

Abstract:We extend a positive Ricci curvature gluing theorem of Perelman to a range of positive intermediate curvature conditions, ranging from positive scalar curvature up to (and including) positive sectional curvature. As an application of this, we demonstrate that the observer moduli space of metrics with positive intermediate Ricci curvatures can have non-trivial higher homotopy groups. Further applications include deriving a sufficient condition for the existence of a metric with positive intermediate Ricci curvature and totally geodesic boundary.

On the fundamental group of steady gradient Ricci solitons with nonnegative sectional curvature

Abstract:In this paper, we study the fundamental group of the complete steady gradient Ricci soliton with nonnegative sectional curvature. We prove that the fundamental group of such a Ricci soliton is either trivial or infinite. As a corollary, we show that an $n$-dimensional complete $\kappa$-noncollapsed steady gradient Ricci soliton with nonnegative sectional curvature must be diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:In this note, we will prove that given a sequence of Ricci flows. (M-k, g(k)(t)) of dimension n, t is an element of [-1, 0], with Ricci curvature bounded below uniformly and volume non-collapsing, (M-k, g(k) (0)) converge as a sequence of manifolds to a limit length space(X, d). The regular part of (X, d)must be open and the convergence is of C-1,C-alpha regularity. As a corollary of this result, we prove that in dimension 3, a Ricci flow can always extend unless either its Ricci curvature goes to -infinity or it shrinks to a point.

Abstract:We use Lott's functional and construct a new functional to derive rigidity results for invariant Ricci flow blowdown limits on nilpotent principal bundles with zero associated curvature. Consequently, we prove that the blowdown limit is locally an expanding Ricci soliton when the structure group is the three dimensional Heisenberg group. In addition, we classify this soliton when the base manifold is one dimensional. This, together with Lott's work in the abelian setting, yields a complete local classification of invariant Ricci flow blowdown limits on four dimensional, nilpotent principal bundles.

Positive Ricci curvature on connected sums of fibre bundles

Abstract:We consider the problem of preserving positive Ricci curvature along connected sums. In this context, based on earlier work by Perelman, Burdick introduced the notion of core metrics and showed that the connected sum of manifolds with core metrics admits a Riemannian metric of positive Ricci curvature. He subsequently showed that core metrics exist on compact rank one symmetric spaces, certain sphere bundles and manifolds obtained as boundaries of certain plumbings. In this article, we show that core metrics can be lifted along general fibre bundles, including sphere bundles and projective bundles. Our techniques also apply to spaces that decompose as the union of two disc bundles such as the Wu manifold. As application we show that all classes in the torsion-free oriented bordism ring can be represented by connected manifolds of positive Ricci curvature.

Abstract:We prove several analogs of Gromov's macroscopic dimension conjecture with extra curvature assumptions. More explicitly, we show that for an open Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of nonnegative Ricci (resp. sectional) curvature, if it has uniformly positive scalar curvature and it is uniformly volume noncollapsed, then the essential (resp. Hausdorff) dimension of an asymptotic cone, as a notion of largeness, has a sharp upper bound $n-2$, which is $2$ less than the upper bound for an open Riemannian manifold with only nonnegative Ricci curvature. As a consequence, the dimension of space of linear growth harmonic functions of $M$ has upper bound $n-1$ which is also $2$ less than the sharp bound $n+1$ when $M$ only has nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also prove the first Betti number upper bound is $n-2$ if $M$ is compact, and $n-3$ if $M$ is non-compact. When $M$ is compact we show a fibration theorem over torus, and a rigidity theorem for the fiber when the first Betti number upper bound is achieved.

Abstract:We study curvature pinching estimates of Ricci flow on complete 3- dimensional manifolds without bounded curvature assumption. We will derive some general curvature conditions which are preserved on any complete solution of 3-dim Ricci flow, these conditions include nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvature as special cases.
