Abstract:A number of new closed-form fundamental solutions for the generalized unsteady Oseen and Stokes flows associated with arbitrary time-dependent translational and rotational motions have been developed. These solutions are decomposed into two parts corresponding to a longitudinal wave and a transversal wave. As examples of application, the hydrodynamic force acting on a sphere or on a circular cylinder translating in an unsteady flow field at low Reynolds numbers are calculated using the new generalized fundamental solutions. The results for a rotating viscous flow past an impulsively moving sphere and an impulsively moving circular cylinder are entirely new.

Abstract:Consider the equations of Navier–Stokes in $\mathbb{R}^3$ in the rotational setting, i.e., with Coriolis force. It is shown that this set of equations admits a unique, global mild solution provided the initial data is small with respect to the norm of the Fourier–Besov space $FB^{{2-3}/p}_{p,r}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, where $p\; \in \; (1,\infty]\; \mathrm{and}\; r\;\in [1,\infty]$. In the two-dimensional setting, a unique, global mild solution to this set of equations exists for non-small initial data $u_{0} \; \in \;L^p_{\sigma}(\mathbb{R}^2)\;\mathrm{for}\;p \;\in\;[2,\infty).$

Abstract:In a recent paper (Li et al., Acta Mech. Sin. 31, 32–44, 2015), the authors claimed that the general solution of steady Stokes flows can be compactly expressed using only two harmonic functions. They present two cases of a flat plate translating through a viscous fluid. The present paper shows that such a two-harmonic solution does not describe the rotation of a circular plate in an unbounded fluid and thus confirms that at least three independent harmonics are required to express the general solution of Stokes equations.

Abstract:We study the initial boundary value problem for the three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in the exterior domain outside a rotating obstacle,with initial density having a compact support.By the coordinate system attached to the obstacle and an appropriate transformation of unknown functions,we obtain the three-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a rotation effect in a fixed exterior domain.We first construct a sequence of unique local strong solutions for the related approximation problems restricted in a sequence of bounded domains,and derive some uniform bounds of higher order norms,which are independent of the size of the bounded domains.Then we prove the local existence of unique strong solution of the problem in the exterior domain,provided that the initial data satisfy a natural compatibility condition.

Using the Schauder’s fixed point theorem, we show the existence of a strong solution for a sufficiently large viscosity ν and sufficiently small data.

Abstract:In this paper,we review some recent work on the Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in recent years.It is well known that the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes system has the global Leray-Hopf weak solutions.When the weak solution satisfies the ProdiSerrin condition,the solution is regular.We obtain some new results in the regularity conditions.Especially,for axisymmetric system,when the rotation speed is zero,it is well known that the system is globally well-posed.We find a new conserved quantity,and obtain some new advances in the regularity conditions of axisymmetric solutions with nonzero swirl,also get the global well-posedness results with the small initial rotating speed.Furthermore,we also get the similar result for the inhomogeneous system.In the end,we consider the global well-posedness of a class of generalized Navier-Stokes systems with the higher order horizontal viscosity D2αh,α≥4/3.

Abstract:We consider the Stokes eigenvalue problem in open balls and open annuli in R3 with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Using the frame of toroidal and poloidal fields we construct the othogonal decomposition of the Stokes eigenvalue problem in problems for toroidal and poloidal eigenfunctions. This provides the proof of the completeness of a system of explicitly calculated Stokes eigenfunctions given by one of the authors in 1999, [14].

The existence and uniqueness of the solutions are obtained by the Galerkin approximation method. Next, θ-scheme of operator splitting algorithm is applied to rotating Navier-Stokes equations and two subproblems are derived. Finally, the computational algorithms for these subproblems are provided.

Abstract:Two and three dimensional stationary rotating Navier-Stokes equations with mixed boundary conditions were studied. The prior estimate of the corresponding solution was obtained under the assumption of bounded energy flow in the inlet and outlet. Employing fixed point theory and compactness theory, the existence and uniqueness of the solution were proved with the compress mapping.

Abstract:In this paper,we adopt the finite element method to solve the three dimensional station- ary rotating Navier-Stokes Equations in primitive variables with mixed boundary conditions. The existence and uniqueness of the approximate problem are showed,and the optimal error estimate is obtained.We give the simple iterative algorithm for the approximate problem, and prove the convergence of this algorithm.To overcome the restriction of the computer resource in the case of three dimension,we use the compressed sparse row format to store the stiff matrix.Then the GMRES method with an incomplete LU preconditioner is adopted to solve the linear system of equations.We analyze the advantage of the simple iterative method over Newton method at last.The numerical examples show that the more computational time has saved by the simple iterative method than the Newton method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a dimensional splitting method for the three dimensional (3D) rotating Navier-Stokes equations. Assume that the domain is a channel bounded by two surfaces and is decomposed by a series of surfaces _i into several sub-domains, which are called the layers of the flow. Every interface _i between two sub-domains shares the same geometry. After establishing a semi-geodesic coordinate (S-coordinate) system based on _i , Navier-Stoke equations in this coordinate can be expressed as the sum of two operators, of which one is called the membrane operator defined on the tangent space on _i , another one is called the bending operator taking value in the normal space on _i . Then the derivatives of velocity with respect to the normal direction of the surface are approximated by the Euler central difference, and an approximate form of Navier-Stokes equations on the surface _i is obtained, which is called the two-dimensional three-component (2D–3C) Navier-Stokes equations on a two dimensional manifold. Solving these equations by alternate iteration, an approximate solution to the original 3D Navier-Stokes equations is obtained. In addition, the proof of the existence of solutions to 2D–3C Navier-Stokes equations is provided, and some approximate methods for solving 2D–3C Navier-Stokes equations are presented.

Abstract:The wellposedness problem for an anisotropic incompressible viscous fluid in ℝ3, rotating around a vector B(t, x):= (b 1(t, x), b 2(t, x), b 3(t, x)), is studied. The global wellposedness in the homogeneous case (B = e 3) with sufficiently fast rotation in the space B 0,½ is proved. In the inhomogeneous case (B = B(t, x h )), the global existence and uniqueness of the solution in B 0, ½ are obtained, provided that the initial data are sufficient small compared to the horizontal viscosity. Furthermore, we obtain uniform local existence and uniqueness of the solution in the same function space. We also obtain propagation of the regularity in B 2,1 ½ under the additional assumption that B depends only on one horizontal space variable.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the boundary integral method to the steady rotating Navier–Stokes equations in exterior domain. Introducing some open ball which decomposes the exterior domain into a finite domain and a infinite domain, we obtain a coupled problem by the steady rotating Navier–Stokes equations in finite domain and a boundary integral equation without using the artificial boundary condition. For the coupled problem, we show the existence of solution in a convex set.

Abstract:By using reproducing kernel theorem, a new method for solving a class of partial differential equation with fractional derivatives is proposed. We give the exact solution by a series form in the reproducing kernel space, and the n ‐term approximate solution is obtained from truncating the series. Moreover, the approximate solution, its integer order derivatives and fractional derivatives are uniformly convergent.
