Abstract:In this paper, a char-based consistency maintenance algorithm is introduced which is implemented in the brainstorm edit mode on the Web-based Real-time cooperative edit system. Here we put forward a star-like system architecture, which is based on events' intercepting-transmiting-recuring, and uses an improved transformation algorithm that is based GOTO algorithm to realize the consistency maintenance. With this improved algorithm, we get high responsiveness of local operations and good consistency among distributed users' operations. At the end of this paper, we introduce our experiment system WRCES.

Abstract:The limitation of network resource reduces the awareness capability of CVE system, which becomes the main bottleneck for applications in Internet. In this paper, we study the relationship between the awareness capability of system and network parameters, such as latency, jitter, and data loss rate; also, according to the features and preferences of user awareness, a network-status-based solution is proposed for self-adaptable awareness scheduling. Moreover, the scheduling algorithm is implemented and verified by a prototype system, results from which indicate that awareness scheduling is useful for decreasing the loss of the awareness capability of system in a limited or unstable network.

Abstract:A consistency maintaining technology for collaborative virtual environment (CVE) systems was proposed to satisfy CVE systems' request for cooperation. The definition of consistency in CVE systems was given, and the reason why traditional consistency maintaining technology used in networked virtual environment systems could not be used in CVE systems was analyzed. System synchronized all sites' physical clock and local lag technology were adopted to maintain the system's consistency. When the system' consistency was broken by long network transmission time, system adopted time warp to repair the object's state. Experimental results show that this technology allows multiple users to operate on the same object simultaneously at different network load.
Study on effects of network characteristics on cooperation performance in a desktop CVE system

Abstract:The influences of network characteristics (e.g. latency, packet loss) on the task performance in desktop collaborative virtual environment (CVE) systems were studied. In the experiment, two remote partners worked together to manipulate shared virtual objects over a network, and a network emulator was utilized to simulate the real network. The task in the experiment was to minimize the time to transfer a frame through a rod with no collisions. The performance of human subjects was measured and analyzed quantitatively as a function of network latency and packet loss rate. The experiment results show that the delay had little effect on the task performance while the network latency was less than 200 ms and it was acceptable while the network latency was less than 500 ms; the packet loss had no effect on the task performance while there were 20 state update messages received and it was acceptable while there were more than 10 state update messages received.

Abstract:In collaborative virtual environment (CVE) systems, participants can freely join and share a virtual environment and do some collaborative works synchronously. And network communication architecture is very important for CVE systems to realize scalability, minimized delay and reliability. In this paper, the communication of CVE systems is categorized in three types: state update, command and event. Furthermore, this paper introduces the collaboration requests and interactive stream in CVE systems. Based on these introductions, a communication architecture for collaborative virtual environment systems is described. This architecture uses updatable queue abstraction in application layer to do message obsolescence and uses interactive stream transport protocol in transport layer to achieve efficient transmission of messages among a large number of participants.

Abstract:Collaborative virtual environment (CVE) is a multi-user virtual environment that supports distributed collaboration. The two main issues that CVE is facing are how to improve system scalability and quality of service. Combining Active routing and content-based publish/subscribe and taking bi-directional shared multicast tree as the communication structure of Interest Management, Active interest management (AIM) can effectively improve system scalability. However, due to the lack of network monitoring, it can only provide same services, and consequently cannot guarantee services and alleviate system workload when it gets saturated. In this paper, we propose a QoS-based Adaptive Access control (QAAC) approach which includes dynamic system delay maintenance, active router verification and host low start. By QAAC, we dynamically control the access of hosts based on network status to improve services and scalability in AIM. Finally, experiment results show that this approach can stabilize network traffic, reduce system load and provide better collaboration services.

Abstract:Concurrency control of collaborative virtual environments involves two requirements which conflict with each other in concurrent space: responsiveness and consistency. To resolve this conflict, this work divided general responsiveness into two types: system responsiveness and individual responsiveness; proposed several general design considerations; and also presented a design policy with guaranteed consistency, optimal system responsiveness, and improved individual responsiveness. Furthermore, this work presented a new role-based speculative concurrency control scheme which maintains consistency and achieves optimal responsiveness. A recovery scheme from failure speculation and the implementation of the overall concurrency control scheme were also described. In conclusion, integrated token scheme with speculation, this mechanism can achieve an equilibrium point between consistency and responsiveness; and the introduction of role scheme can optimize the system performance.

Abstract:Consistency maintenance is a basic issue in computer- supported cooperative editing systems. Aimed at providing a clear, appropriate and extended description on this issue, a new three-level consistency model is proposed: (1) Operation Consistency, which promises all operations are executed at the same order; (2) Content (Syntactic or Intention) Consistency, which promises the effects of all operations are the same at all sites; and (3) Semantic Consistency, which promises the user meanings are the same at all sites. Finally, evaluations on existing collaborative editing systems are discussed.

Abstract:The increasing quest for mobility bolster the integration of technology of computer supported cooperative work and mobile computing. In cooperative editing systems that integrated with embedded devices, inconsistency is one of the major problems. In this paper, locking scheme and the corresponding algorithm of locking conflict solution are proposed to maintain consistency of the distributed shared documents and enhance the efficiency of collaborative users. The scheme and algorithm are realized in CoEdit - a prototype system of collaborative editing system.

Abstract:A distributed virtual environment (DVE) is a shared virtual environment (VE) that allows remote users to interact with each other through networks. DVEs are becoming very popular due to some prominent applications, such as online games and virtual worlds. To support a large number of users, a multi-server DVE architecture may be adopted, with each server managing a subset of users. However, there are two critical problems with this architecture: view inconsistency caused by delays and server overloading caused by uneven distribution of users. While the first problem affects users' perception of the VE and causes user disputes, the second problem affects the system response time. In this paper, we first show that the view inconsistency problem and the load balancing problem are conflicting objectives. We then propose an efficient joint optimization framework to address both problems. Our results show that the proposed method can improve the view inconsistency problem significantly, which is important to the interactivity of DVE applications.

Abstract:Consislency maintenance is one of the mqor problems in collaborative editing systems. Some work has been done to resolve this problem, but most of them focus on text editing and object-basedgraphics editing systems. In this paper, we propose o new schema to resolve the consistency maintenance problem for image-based collaborative graphics editing system. First three inconsistency problems exist in image-based collaborative graphics editing systems are investigated. Then formal image Boolean colculation defrnitions, chorocterization of the relationship among image operations, and imoge operation transformotion defrnitions are given. Finally, a new distributed Imoge Operation Transformation (dIOPI) algorithm is proposed to achieving consistency preservation in imagebased collaborative graphics editing systems. The schema and algorithm are realized in CoDesign a pro towe system of colloborative graphics editing.

Abstract:Real-time collaborative editing (RTCE) can support a group of people collaboratively work from distributed locations at the same time. However, consistency maintenance is one key challenge when different types of conflicts happen. Therefore a common synchronous mechanism is proposed to support consistency maintenance in the process of multi-view business modeling. Based on operation analysis on different views of models in the real-time collaborative editing system, detection of potential conflicts is realized by means of a decision-making tree. Then consistency maintenance provides a comprehensive and applicable conflicts detection and resolution for collaborative business modeling. Finally, a prototype of collaborative multi-view business modeling system is introduced to verify the approach. The point is that the mechanism proposes a comprehensive solution for collaborative multi-view business modeling.

Abstract:The wide availability of wireless devices has become one of the main challenges for designers of collaborative applications like collaborative graphics editing. Mobile devices are not as "standardized" as stationary computers but are much more diverse with respect to computing resources, connection bandwidth and display capabilities. In this paper, we present a semi-replicated architecture which supports multiple degrees of consistency maintenance for collaborative graphics editing systems in heterogeneous environments. To maintain consistency of the replicas on mobile embedded devices, either data consistency or semantic consistency is maintained based on the prediction of the regions of interest. The proposed on demand consistency maintenance scheme for mobile sites makes collaboration more efficiently. The scheme is realized in our prototype system of collaborative graphics editing system that can work well in heterogeneous environments.

Abstract:AbstractThis paper addresses consensus problems for discrete-time multi-agent systems with time-varying delays and switching interaction topologies and provides a class of effective consensus protocols that are built on repeatedly using the same state information at two time-steps. We show that those protocols can solve consensus problems under milder conditions than the popular consensus algorithm proposed by Jadbabaie et al., specifically, the presented protocols allow for the case that agents can only use delayed information of themselves, whereas the popular one is invalid. It is proved that if the union of the interaction topologies across the time interval with some given length always has a spanning tree, then in the presence of bounded time-varying delays, those protocols solve consensus problems.

Abstract:It is a challenge to support the intention preservation of operation and maintain the consistency of the shared objects in the field of CSCW. An effect method must be taken to solve the operation conflict since different users may access the same object in the same time. In the real-time Computer Supported Collaborative Design (CSCD), we examine the spatial relationship between the current feature and the other features, and present a nonlinear modifying algorithm to express the history of the user's operation. Then a concurrent control policy based on the 3D model is put forward after the conflict feature is analyzed. This policy not only guarantees the precondition of the user's operation, but also maintains the consistency of the shared objects.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of two types of collaborations during engineering design, namely time collaboration and space collaboration, this paper introduces a Total Data Model (TDM) centered framework to support the maintenance of time and space consistencies in hybrid CAD environments. By separating data and view, the proposed framework supports view-wandering between different perspectives so that designers can adjust their behaviors to avoid conflicts. The maintenance of time consistency is achieved by utilizing the Address Space Transformation (AST) algorithm. In order to adapt AST to new large-scale design environments, an effective garbage collection strategy is proposed. As for space collaboration, a conflict detection algorithm based on feature face is introduced. A prototype system has been developed to prove the validity, efficiency, and feasibility of the proposed framework.
