Abstract:An expert system for supervisory control of an industrial ethanol oxidizing plant is described. In the process of producing aldehyde from ethanol oxidation, there are five unit operations involved and the fixed-bed catalytic reactor plays significant role, and the raw material consumption of the process is analyzed and served as the main variable related to performance of the process. Tasks for supervisory control of the plant include keeping safe operation of the plant and minimizing the raw material consumption of the process. Some kinds of subtask can be classified. The expert system proposed is a hybrid one which consists of a knowledge based part and a conventional logic part. The later contains a set of models and numerical algorithms, which can be combined to form functional mould for the real-time subtasks such as estimaton, optimization and control. The knowledge-based part, with a bidirection reasoning strategy, can use both qualitative knowledge and model-based information for analyzing performance of the process, diagnosing potential origins from which a deterioration of the performance or a fault of the equipment could arise, and providing corrective actions by assigning suitable subtasks to the conventional part of the system. The practical case has been discussed and the usefulness of microcomputer-based expert system in chemical industry has been shown.
