Antibiotic Application among Surgical Patients in Four Hospitals of Beijing

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To perform the investigation of the status and exiting problem of antibiotic use among surgical patients in four hospitals in Beijing and provide reference for safe,rational and effective use of antibiotics clinically.METHODS The data of surgical patients(n=349 in 2000 and n=375 in 2004) were collected randomly and analyzed retrospectively.RESULTS Of the selected surgical inpatients in 2000 and 2004,99.7% and 99.5% were receiving antibiotics.The rate of rational antibiotic use was 60.9% and 53.4%,respectively.The purpose of antibiotic use was for simple prophylaxis in 46.6% and 45.3%,for both treatment and prophylaxis in 53.4% and 54.7%,respectively.The empiric use of antibiotics composed 99.7% and 98.4%,respectively.In 65.9% and 63.5%,30.7% and 32.7%,3.4% and 2.9%,0 and 0.8% of the users,a single,two,three and four or more agents were used in combinations,respectively.CONCLUSIONS There is unrational antibiotic usage in clinical practice,but the tendency of rational antibiotic use is arising in general.
