Abstract:Objective To observe the effect of 5% NaHCO3 on the latency of hyperbaric oxygen-induced convulsion in mice, and to explore the relationship between endogenesis carbon dioxide and hyperbaric oxygen-induced convulsion. Methods First, twenty-four mice were randomly divided into six groups: 5% NaHCO3 and normal saline (NS) groups under 3 ATA,4 ATA,5 ATA,respectively. The animals were given intraperitoneally 5% NaHCO3 or NS. The effect of 5% NaHCO3 on the latency of hyperbaric oxygen-induced convulsion under different pressures was observed. Second, fifteen mice were randomly divided into three groups:normal pressure group, NS group,5% NaHCO3 group. Changes in the content of maleic dialdehyde (MDA) were measured after 18 min under 4 ATA pressure of pure oxygen. Results ( 1 ) There was a significant difference in the latency of hyperbaric oxygen-induced convulsion between 5% NaHCO3 group and NS group under 5 ATA and 4 ATA (P 0.01). But difference between 5% NaHCO3 group and NS group under 3 ATA pressure was not found, for the animals didn't present convulsion after 120 min. (2) Under 4 ATA pressure, after 18 min, there was a significant difference of the MDA content in the cortex, hippocampus, and striatum between the NS group and the normal pressure group, as well as between the 5% NaHCO3 group and the normal pressure group (P 0. 05). The MDA content in the cortex, hippocampus, and striatum in the 5% NaHCO3 group was significantly lower than that of the NS group (P 0. 05). Conclusions It was suggested that 5% NaHC03 could lengthen the latency of hyperbaric oxygen-induced convulsion, and abate the oxidation damage of the brain tissues.
