Marketization, Population Mobility and HIV/AIDS——Based on Guangdong Province

Abstract:Viewed from a global perspective,the more impoverished an area or a country is,the more serious the problem of HIV/AIDS becomes.In China,six provinces have been more affected by HIV/AIDS than other provinces and five of these six provinces are indeed characterized by low levels of social and economic development,but Guangdong is an exception.To understand this Guangdong puzzle,the present article addresses three socio-economic factors,and it argues that a higher degree of the province's marketization and a higher HIV risk among the province's huge population of migrant workers,might contribute to the high level of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Guangdong.
