Abstract:This paper presents a condition in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) for the quadratic stability of discrete-time interval 2-D systems. With Matlab, it is very convenient to solve this problem. Necessity shows that the condition is less conservative in some cases. The illustrative example shows that this method is effective to check the quadratic stability of discrete-time interval 2-D systems.

Abstract:We propose a Ulm-like method for solving inverse eigenvalue problems, which avoids solving approximate Jacobian equations comparing with other known methods. A convergence analysis of this method is provided and the R-quadratic convergence property is proved under the assumption of the distinction of given eigenvalues. Numerical experiments as well as the comparison with the inexact Newton-like method are given in the last section.

Some conditions are also given under which the constructed matrix is nonnegative and its diagonal entries are specified. Abstract:Consider the nonlinear matrix equation X−A*X−2A=I, where A is an n×n complex matrix, I the identity matrix and A* the conjugate transpose of a matrix A. In this paper, it is proved that this matrix equation has a unique Hermitian positive definite solution provided ∥A∥2<1, and moreover, under the condition ∥A∥2<1, a perturbation bound for the Hermitian positive definite solution to this matrix equation is derived, and an explicit expression of the condition number for the Hermitian positive definite solution is obtained. The results are illustrated by using some numerical examples.
On positive Jacobi matrices with compact inverses

Abstract:We consider positive Jacobi matrices $J$ with compact inverses and consequently with purely discrete spectra. A number of properties of the corresponding sequence of orthogonal polynomials is studied including the convergence of their zeros, the vague convergence of the zero counting measures and of the Christoffel--Darboux kernels on the diagonal. Particularly, if the inverse of $J$ belongs to some Schatten class, we identify the asymptotic behaviour of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials and express it in terms of its regularized characteristic function. In the even more special case when the inverse of $J$ belongs to the trace class we derive various formulas for the orthogonality measure, eigenvectors of $J$ as well as for the functions of the second kind and related objects. These general results are given a more explicit form in the case when $-J$ is a generator of a Birth--Death process. Among others we provide a formula for the trace of the inverse of $J$. We illustrate our results by introducing and studying a modification of $q$-Laguerre polynomials corresponding to a determinate moment problem.

Abstract:Consider the nonlinear matrix equationX+A∗X−1A=P,where A,P are n×n complex matrices with P Hermitian positive definite, and A* denotes the conjugate transpose of a matrix A. In this paper a sharper perturbation bound for the maximal solution to the matrix equation is derived, explicit expressions of the condition number for the maximal solution are obtained, and the backward error of an approximate solution to the maximal solution is evaluated by using the techniques developed in [Linear Algebra Appl. 259 (1997) 183; Linear Algebra Appl. 350 (2002) 237]. The results are illustrated by using numerical examples.

Abstract:The inexact Rayleigh quotient iteration (RQI) is used for computing the smallest eigenpair of a large Hermitian matrix. Under certain condition, the method was proved to converge quadratically in literature. However, it is shown in this paper that under the original given condition the inexact RQI may not quadratically converge to the desired eigenpair and even may misconverge to some other undesired eigenpair. A new condition, called the uniform positiveness condition, is given that can fix misconvergence problem and ensure the quadratic convergence of the inexact RQI. An alternative to the inexact RQI is the Jacobi-Davidson (JD) method without subspace acceleration. A new proof of its linear convergence is presented and a sharper bound is established in the paper. All the results are verified and analyzed by numerical experiments.

Abstract:We investigate how invariant subspaces corresponding to a single eigenvalue will change when a matrix is perturbed. We focus on the invariant subspaces corresponding to an eigenvalue associated with the Jordan blocks that have the same size. An invariant subspace can be expressed as the range of a full column matrix. We characterize the perturbed invariant subspaces with such matrices expressed in a sum form that exhibits the fractional orders. We also provide the formulas for the coefficient matrices associated with the zero and first fractional orders. The results extend the standard invariant subspace perturbation theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the quadratic inverse eigenvalue problem (QIEP) of constructing real symmetric matrices M, C, and K of size n x it, with (M, C, K) 0 0, so that the quadratic matrix polynomial Q(lambda) = lambda M-2 + lambda X + K has in (n < m <= 2n) prescribed eigenpairs. It is shown that, for almost all prescribed eigenpairs, the QIEP has a solution with M nonsingular if m < m(*), and has only solutions with (Q(lambda)) equivalent to 0 otherwise, where m(*) = n + (1 + root 1 +8 n)/2. We also derive the expression of the general solution of the QIEP for both cases. Abstract:A constructive perturbation bound of the Drazin inverse of a square matrix is derived using a technique proposed by G. Stewart and based on perturbation theory for invariant subspaces. This is an improvement of the result published by the authors Wei and Li [Numer. Linear Algebra Appl., 10 (2003), pp. 563--575]. It is a totally new approach to developing perturbation bounds for the Drazin inverse of a matrix. A numerical example which indicates the sharpness of the perturbation bound is presented.
