Abstract:Pyrethroids are a class of commonly used insecticides and are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment in various regions. Aquatic toxicity of pyrethroids was often overestimated when using conventional bulk chemical concentrations because of their strong hydrophobicity. Over the last two decades, bioavailability has been recognized and applied to refine the assessment of ecotoxicological effects of pyrethroids. This review focuses on recent advances in the bioavailability of pyrethroids, specifically in the aquatic environment. We summarize the development of passive sampling and Tenax extraction methods for assessing the bioavailability of pyrethroids. Factors affecting the bioavailability of pyrethroids, including physicochemical properties of pyrethroids, and quality and quantity of organic matter, were overviewed. Various applications of bioavailability on the assessment of bioaccumulation and acute toxicity of pyrethroids were also discussed. The final section of this review highlights future directions of research, including development of standardized protocols for measurement of bioavailability, establishment of bioavailability-based toxicity benchmarks and water/sediment quality criteria, and incorporation of bioavailability into future risk assessment and management actions. Laboratory Screening of Alternative Insecticides for Highly Toxic Insecticides Against the Striped Stem Borer (chilo Suppressalis) on Rice

Abstract:To provide alternative insecticides for rice insect control,the toxicities against the striped stem borer,Chilo suppressalis of 32 insecticides fallen into seven different classes were evaluated by the topical application method in 2005.Efficacy data showed that seven novel insecticides(abamectin,emamectin bezoate,fipronil,tebufenozide,furan tebufenozide,hexaflumuron and chlorfluazuron) and a few organophosphates(such as phoxim,chlorpyrifos,quinaphos and pyridaphenthion) were potential alternatives for highly toxic pesticides in field trials.In addition,the susceptibilities of four field populations of C.suppressalis to 10 pyrethroids were estimated in laboratory in 2004 and 2005.The results showed that 7 pyrethroids with high fish-toxicity(beta-cyfluthrin,lambda-cyhalothrin,beta-cypermethrin,deltamethrin,S-fenvalerate,alpha-cypermethrin and fenpropathrin) were more effective against C.suppressalis than most of organophosphates.It was also observed that the field population of C.suppressalis from Rui′an,Zhejiang(RA05) showed high levels of resistance to some pyrethroids with high-fish toxicity,such as beta-cyfluthrin,lambda-cyhalothrin,beta-cypermethrin and deltamethrin(their resistance ratios were 166.7,51.9,41.3 and 36.8,respectively),providing the first evidence of the resistance development to pyrethroids in field populations of C.suppressalis,although these high fish-toxicity pyrethroids were banned from using in rice paddy.Three compounds with low fish-toxicity(cycloprothrin,etofenprox and silafluofen) showed higher efficacy against C.suppressalis than triazophos in the triazophos-resistant population(RA05).Therefore,these low fish-toxicity pyrethroids can be considered as candidates for replacing highly toxic organophosphates and resistance management for the rice striped stem borer.

Abstract:The chemical pesticides have played important roles in controlling pests,reducing the hazards and ensuring food security,while long-term irrational use of chemicals resulted in many disadvantages such as 3R problem (Resistance,Residue and Resurgence).This paper reviewed the research and application technologies of ‘Green Plant Protection’ on pest management in paddy fields in China based on reducing the initial population size of rice insect pests,decreasing population growth rate of rice insect pests,increasing environmental resistance to insect pests in rice-based ecosystem,application of biological control agents and chemical control for emergency.A suitable green control technology system should be set up in different places by selection of different technologies based on local conditions,climatic conditions and characteristics of rice pests.Then,it is encouraged to promote the application of the suitable green control technology system with demonstration area construction and multiform,multi-level training to cater to the aim of reduction in chemical insecticide use and damage by rice insect pests.
Distribution of Chlorpyrifos in Rice Paddy Environment and Its Potential Dietary Risk

Abstract:Chlorpyrifos is one of the most extensively used insecticides in China. The distribution and residues of chlorpyrifos in a paddy environment were characterized under field and laboratory conditions. The half-lives of chlorpyrifos in the two conditions were 0.9–3.8 days(field) and 2.8–10.3 days(laboratory), respectively. The initial distribution of chlorpyrifos followed the increasing order of water < straw < soil, and soil was characterized as the major absorber. The ultimate residues in rice grain were below the maximum residue limit(MRL) with a harvest interval of 14 days. The chronic exposure for chlorpyrifos was rather low compared to the acceptable daily intake(ADI = 0.01 mg/kg bw) due to rice consumption. The chronic exposure risk from chlorpyrifos in rice grain was 5.90% and 1.30% ADI from field and laboratory results respectively. Concerning the acute dietary exposure,intake estimated for the highest chlorpyrifos level did not exceed the acute reference dose(ARf D = 0.1 mg/kg bw). The estimated short-term intakes(ESTIs) were 0.78% and 0.25% of the ARf D for chlorpyrifos. The results showed that the use of chlorpyrifos in rice paddies was fairly safe for consumption of rice grain by consumers.

Abstract:Chemical pesticides play crucial roles in the management of crop diseases and pests. However, excessive and irrational use of pesticides has become a major concern and obstacle to sustainable agriculture. As a result, the quality and security of agricultural products are reduced, and the ecological and environmental integrities are threatened. Recently, environment-friendly pest management measures have been introduced and adopted to manage rice insect pests and reduce the use of insecticides. This paper reviewed the advancements in development and application of non-chemicaltechnologies for insect pest management during rice production in China.
Ecological Responses of Brown Planthopper,nilaparvata Lugens,to Triazophos and Deltamethrin on Transgenic Bt Rice Lines and Their Non-Bt Parental Rice

Abstract:In this study,the brown planthopper( BPH),Nilaparvata lugens( Hemiptera: Delphacidae),cultured on Bt rice lines( T1C-19 with cry1 C gene and T2A-1 with cry2 A gene) and their parental rice MH63,were treated with a series of concentrations of triazophos and deltamethrin when they developed up to the third instar for the evaluation of the effects of Bt rice on BPH resurgence induced by pesticides. The results indicated that BPH nymphal duration decreased with the increasing concentration of deltamethrin,while no significant differences of BPH nymphal duration were observed on the same rice variety treated with the different concentrations of triazophos. Furthermore,the survival rate of BPH significantly declined and their fecundity significantly increased with the increasing concentration of insecticides. However,ecological fitness parameters of BPH including nymphal duration,survival rate,female adult mass,fecundity and egg hatchability were not significantly different among Bt and non-Bt rice varieties when they treated with the same concentration of insecticide. These results implied that no significant difference in the BPH resurgence induced by pesticides was observed among the two tested Bt rice varieties and their non-Bt parental rice variety.

Abstract:The brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stal), is one of the most important insect pests on paddy rice in tropical and temperate Asia. Overuse and misuse of insecticides have resulted in the development of high resistance to many different insecticides in this pest. Studies were conducted to evaluate the change of resistance level to four insecticides over 15 generations without any exposure to insecticides in brown planthopper. After 15 generations' rearing without exposure to insecticide, brown planthopper could reverse the resistance to imidacloprid, chlorpyrifos, fipronil, and fenobucarb. The range and style of resistance reversal of brown planthopper differed when treated with four different insecticides. To monitor potential changes in insect physiological responses, we measured the activity of each of the three selected enzymes, including acetylcholinesterases (AChE), general esterases (EST), and glutathione S-transferases. After multiple generations' rearing without exposure to insecticide, AChE and EST activities of brown planthopper declined with the increased generations, suggesting that the brown planthopper population adjusted activities of EST and AChE to adapt to the non-insecticide environment. These findings suggest that the reducing, temporary stop, or rotation of insecticide application could be incorporated into the brown planthopper management.
Application of ecological engineering technology to control major insect pests in single-cropping late rice ecosystem

Abstract:A series of problems including rice ecosystem imbalance,pest rampancy,environmental pollution and pesticide residues exceeding as well,have appeared as a result of the excessive application of fertilizers and pesticides in highly intensive rice system,especially for single-cropping rice in China.Since 2009,ecological engineering technology was carried out in Ningbo single-cropping rice experimental sites in Zhejiang Province,to restore ecological service functions of rice ecosystem,to repress insect pest populations,and to decrease the inputs of pesticides and fertilizers.Technical measures mainly include:1) adjusting the biodiversity to protect native natural enemies;2) growing nectariferous plant to strengthen the biological fimction of natural enemies;3) applying trap crop and sex pheromone to reduce insect pest source base;4) adjusting the pesticide use strategies to reduce mortality of natural enemies;5) regulating fertilizer to repress natural growth rate of insect pests;6) integrating series of single technique into a system characterized as simple,efficient and economical.The investigation results for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014,showed that the application of ecological engineering in singlecropping rice area had enriched the arthropods biodiversity,increased natural enemy population and restored ecological function of rice ecosystem,and insect pests were repressed persistently in a lower level,the amount of pesticides sprayed was reduced 93.75％ and nitrogen fertilizer was reduced 12.42％ compared with control.Rice yield increased 9.99％ in the ecological engineering area than control area,and economic,social and ecological benefits were all obtained.Ecological engineering which is environmental friendly and apply simply and easily,has become a national main technology and would have a good prospect to be used widely.

Contamination of Pyrethroids in Agricultural Soils from the Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:This study focused on contamination levels and spatial distributions of four common pyrethroids found in agricultural soils of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China. Pyrethroids were detected in 241 soil samples (88.8% detection rate) with total concentrations ranging from cypermethrin (1.10 ng/g) > deltamethrin (0.89 ng/g) > cyhalothrin (0.20 ng/g). The highest concentration of fenpropathrin was recorded as 37.6 ng/g. The highest detection rate of 63.9% was found for cyhalothrin. A distinct pattern of spatial distribution was observed where high concentrations of pyrethroids were detected in sites around Taihu Lake. Potential sources of pyrethroids in agricultural soils from the YRD region include pyrethroids used for pest control and wastewater irrigation in the region. Redundancy and correlation analyses show that the soil TOC values have played a significant role in the behavior of pyrethroids in agricultural soils of the YRD region. Potential ecological risks of pyrethroids in agricultural soils of the YRD region are low. Cypermethrin and cyhalothrin showed potential toxic effects on the ecological conditions of agricultural soils in 4.6% and 2.9% of the sampling sites, respectively. Further studies should pay more attention to the potential human health risks posed by pyrethroids in agricultural soils for the protection of soil quality and food safety.
Efficacy and Economic Analysis of Formulation and Dosage of Pymetrozine in Controlling Rice Planthoppers

Abstract:Field experiments in three sites in Zhejiang province were carried out for evaluation of efficacy and economic efficiency of formulation and dosage of pymetrozine in controlling rice planthoppers,by economic threshold model-based simple judgment rule of chemical control.Wettable granule(WG) of pymetrozine was as effective as suspension emulsion(SE) with the same rate of 75 g a.i.·hm-2 in controlling the small brown planthopper(SBPH),Laodelphax striatellus,in rice panicle.Rates of 75 g a.i.·hm-2 and 112.5 g a.i.·hm-2 of 50% pymetrozine WG had efficacies of 60%-97% from 1 to 21 days after treatment(DAT) for controlling SBPH and the white-backed planthopper,Sogatella furcifera,in mid-season of rice growth.Same rates of 50% pymetrozine WG obtained the efficacies of 77%-98% for the brown planthopper,Nilaparvata lugens,from 4 to 21 DAT.The trends of control efficacies for the three planthoppers species in the two experimental sites were similar and could be well-fitted by Logistic models against DAT and reached the final maximum value of 98%,suggesting both the rates of the WG formulation of pymetrozine have fast and sustainable controlling effect for at least 21 days.The economic threshold model-based simple judgment rule of chemical control indicated that 50% pymetrozine WG in a rate of 75 g a.i.·hm-2 is the optimal selection in control of the three species of rice planthoppers in both japonica rice and indica hybrid rice.

Abstract:Pyrethroid pesticides are widely used in agriculture, aquaculture, and daily life in China, leading to concerns about their environmental residues. However, there is limited information available regarding the compositional distribution, bioaccumulation, and associated health and environmental risks of pyrethroids in the aquaculture areas of Eastern China. This study investigated the residues, distribution, and risk assessment of pyrethroids including deltamethrin, permethrin, fenvalerate, cypermethrin and bifenthrin in Yangcheng Lake using solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The risk assessment of water, sediment, and aquatic products of Yangcheng Lake was conducted using various evaluation methods. The results revealed that pyrethroids were found at higher levels in both water and sediment in Yangcheng Lake with some seasonal variations observed in their distribution patterns. Compared with other watersheds in China, typical aquaculture areas of the Yangtze River Delta showed higher detection rates and quantities of pyrethroid pesticides. Ecological risk assessments indicated high risks to the environment from all five tested pyrethroids at Yangcheng Lake; deltamethrin posed the highest risk among them. Dietary assessment results showed no risks associated with aquatic products from Yangcheng Lake but drinking water at certain sites presented unacceptable health risks.

Progress on Insect Resistance to Pyrethroid Insecticides

Abstract:With the extensive use of pyrethroid pesticides,many kinds of pests have had drug-resistant at varying degrees. Resistance status of insects against the pyrethroid pesticides as well as cause and mechanisms of resistance,interactive resistance with the other pesticides,transmissibility of resistance,current monitoring methods and some other progress on relevant researches were reviewed. Some methods to control resistance of insects against pyrethroid pesticides,and some issues about damage to insect genes diversity and biological diversity led by the pesticide were also discussed.

The low-lethal concentrations of rotenone and pyrethrins suppress the population growth of Rhopalosiphum padi

Abstract:As an important pest on winter wheat, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) causes damage to the wheat yield by sucking plant nutrients, transmitting plant viruses and producing mildew. R. padi has been reported to develop resistance to pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. To explore potential alternative approaches for R. padi control, the activity of 10 botanical insecticides was evaluated. Results suggested that the toxicity of rotenone and pyrethrins to R. padi were the highest and near to the commonly used chemical insecticides. When exposed to the low-lethal concentrations (LC10, LC30) of rotenone or pyrethrins for 24 h, the lifespan and fecundity of adults in F0 generation decreased significantly compared to control. The negative effect could also be observed in the F1 generation, including the decreased average offspring, longevity of adult, and prolonged nymph period. The population parameters in F1 generation of R. padi were also inhibited by exposing to the low-lethal concentrations of rotenone or pyrethrins, including the decreased net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of natural increase, finite rate of population increase, and gross reproduction rate. Co-toxocity factor results showed that mixtures of rotenone and thiamethoxam, pyrethrins and thiamethoxam showed synergistic effect. Our work suggested that rotenone and pyrethrins showed negative effect on the population growth under low-lethal concentrations. They are suitable for R. padi control as foliar spraying without causing population resurgence.
Pesticide Application Has Little Influence on Coding and Non-Coding Gene Expressions in Rice

Abstract:Background Agricultural insects are one of the major threats to crop yield. It is a known fact that pesticide application is an extensive approach to eliminate insect pests, and has severe adverse effects on environment and ecosystem; however, there is lack of knowledge whether it could influence the physiology and metabolic processes in plants. Results Here, we systemically analyzed the transcriptomic changes in rice after a spray of two commercial pesticides, Abamectin (ABM) and Thiamethoxam (TXM). We found only a limited number of genes (0.91%) and (1.24%) were altered by ABM and TXM respectively, indicating that these pesticides cannot dramatically affect the performance of rice. Nevertheless, we characterized 1140 Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs) interacting with 105 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that can be impacted by the two pesticides, suggesting their certain involvement in response to farm chemicals. Moreover, we detected 274 alternative splicing (AS) alterations accompanied by host genes expressions, elucidating a potential role of AS in control of gene transcription during insecticide spraying. Finally, we identified 488 transposons that were significantly changed with pesticides treatment, leading to a variation in adjacent coding or non-coding transcripts. Conclusion Altogether, our results provide valuable insights into pest management through appropriate timing and balanced mixture, these pesticides have no harmful effects on crop physiology over sustainable application of field drugs.
Distribution and Partitioning of Pyrethroid Insecticides in Agricultural Lands: Critical Influencing Factors

Abstract:Pyrethroid insecticides are widely applied due to the broad spectrum and high efficiency in pest control and detected in various environmental media, but the key factor affecting their occurrence and distribution in agricultural lands is still not clear. Here, we measured pyrethroid residues in 644 surface soil and 630 surface water samples and quantified the impacts of various factors on the distribution and partition of pyrethroids through a large-scale field study in Southeast China during 2015–2017. The pyrethroid residues were widely detected in the studied areas, and the mean concentration of seven individual pyrethroids in surface soil and water ranged from 0.10 (cyfluthrin, (CYF)) to 12.14 ng/g (bifenthrin, (BIF)) and 0.18 (CYF) to 3.36 µg/L (BIF) respectively, which were higher than other regions in China and some other countries. Using a generalized linear model coupled with dominance analysis, we found that the crop type and season were significantly associated with pyrethroid residues in surface soil and water (p < 0.05). The crop difference dominated the variances of the distribution of pyrethroid residues in the surface soil and water with a contribution of more than 55% and followed by the factor of season difference. The findings provide new insight into the distribution and partitioning of pyrethroids in agricultural lands and insecticide control on ecological safety and public health.
A full evaluation of chiral phenylpyrazole pesticide flufiprole and the metabolites to non-target organism in paddy field

Abstract:Pesticides applied to paddy fields may pose considerable danger to non-target aquatic organisms and further threaten human health. Flufiprole is a pesticide used in rice fields; considering the widespread existence of rice-fish-farming ecosystems, the acute toxicities of flufiprole enantiomers and its six metabolites (fipronil, flufiprole sulfide, flufiprole sulfone, detrifluoromethylsulfinyl flufiprole, desulfinyl flufiprole, and flufiprole amide) to four common aquatic organisms in rice fields including Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (pond loach), Carassius gibelio (Prussian carp), Pelophylax nigromaculatus (black-spotted frog), and Daphnia magna (water flea) were investigated. Genotoxicity, pathological changes and the effects on the antioxidant system of M. anguillicaudatus were also evaluated after exposure. The LC50 (EC50) values showed that fipronil and desulfinyl flufiprole were the most toxic compounds and were approximately about six times as toxic as flufiprole. No enantioselective toxicity was observed between the two enantiomers. The activity of antioxidant defense enzymes and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver and gills of M. anguillicaudatus were significantly increased by the chemicals in most cases. In addition, fipronil and desulfinyl flufiprole were found to induce an increase in the micronucleus rate in M. anguillicaudatus. Histopathological analysis showed that the liver of M. anguillicaudatus was not significantly affected by flufiprole. Our study demonstrated a potential negative effect on flufiprole-treated aquatic organisms. As an alternative to fipronil, the environmental risk of flufiprole and its metabolites to non-target organisms in rice fields cannot be ignored.

Abstract:A bioassay was conducted using a drug contacting method to determine the contact toxicities of various pesticides commonly used in the paddy field to female adults of Cotesia chilonis(Matsumura) a larval and dominant endoparasitoid of the rice stem borer Chilo suppressalis(Walker) from four different locations including Yangzhou,Anji,Jinhua and Yueqing.The results indicated that among seven technical productions of insecticides,fipronil,chlorpyrifos and triazophos showed higher toxicity to this parasitic wasp,and monosultap,imidacloprid and avermectin showed the moderate toxicity,while chlorantraniliprole exhibited the lowest toxicity.Among twelve kinds of insecticide preparations,chlorantraniliprole SC and three preparations associated with avermectin had relatively lower toxicity to this parasitic wasp,while others had higher toxic effects.Among four kinds of germicides,tricyclazole-iprobenfos showed the highest toxicity,propiconazol difenoconazole showed moderate toxicity,and both of validamycin and moroxydine hydrochloride-ribavirin showed the lowest toxicity.As regard to two kinds of herbicides,bensulfuron-methyl pretilachlor had the higher toxicity to this parasitic wasp by comparison with quinclorac-bensulfuronmethyl.In addition,the same pesticide had different toxicity to the parasitic wasps depending on their sampled locations at some cases.
Spatial evaluation of the pesticide application method by farmers in a paddy field in the northern part of Vietnam

Abstract:The pesticide application method is important for controlling a target pest effectively. The current status of pesticide application techniques for small-scale rice farmers in Red River Delta, Vietnam aims to be clarified to control serious rice pest insects, such as Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), which live on the bottom of rice plants. Interviews with farmers revealed their preferences and practices towards pesticide application. The farmers' application technique was evaluated by investigating the droplet deposition level at different heights of rice plants (bottom, middle, and top) and the distance from the spray walking path (near, middle, and far) in a rice paddy field using water-sensitive paper (WSP). Droplet deposition on WSPs was categorized into eight ranks. Ordered logistic model analysis revealed that the droplet did not reach to the bottom of plant, while no significant differences were found among the distances from the walking path. The droplet deposition rank and the mortality of N. lugens were positively correlated. The low efficiency of the pesticide applied by farmers to control N. lugens could be one of the factors that contribute to the insecticide-resistance development of N. lugens in Vietnam.

Abstract:In this study, we applied high-volume solid phase extraction (Hi-volume SPE) to investigate the occurrence of 11 pyrethroid insecticides in surface waters of Lake Taihu and its runoff. Permethrin was the most important pollutants, accounting for more than 60% of the total pyrethroid insecticides. The results explained by principal component analysis-multiple linear regression indicated that pyrethroid insecticides in surface waters of Lake Taihu were influenced by human activities such as agriculture and household use. Tributaries play an important role in the distribution of pyrethroid insecticides in Lake Taihu, and the effect of atmospheric deposition can be neglected. The rivers surrounding Lake Taihu contribute 2292 kg of pyrethroid insecticides into Lake Taihu annually. The results of risk assessment indicate that pyrethroid insecticides take high risk to the ecology of Lake Taihu and human beings around it, which needs to be taken seriously and the use of permethrin in the Yangtze River Delta region in particular needs to be controlled.
