Abstract:Although cancer incidence and mortality rates in the United States and some European countries have started to decrease, those in developing countries are increasing. China, the most populous developing country, is facing a serious challenge from cancer. Cancer incidence has been increasing for decades, and cancer is the leading cause of death in China. In 2012, the cancer incidence was 174.0 per 100,000, and the cancer mortality was 122.2 per 100,000 in China. In addition to the still-prevalent traditional Chinese cancers of the stomach, liver, esophagus, cervix, and nasopharynx, the incidence of "Western" cancers such those of the lung, breast, and colorectum has increased alarmingly in recent years. These increases are likely due to the lifestyle and environmental changes associated with rapid economic development and population aging. More importantly, a large portion of these cancers are preventable. Researchers in China have made important contributions to cancer prevention research, especially in the traditional Chinese cancers. More cancer prevention research and measures, especially on the major emerging cancers, are urgently needed. This review article highlights some of the past achievements and present needs in cancer prevention research in China and suggests important areas for future studies. (C) 2015 AACR.

Abstract:Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. In China, the incidence of lung cancer has grown rapidly, resulting in a large social and economic burden. Several researchers have devoted their studies to lung cancer and have demonstrated that there are many risk factors for lung cancer in China, including tobacco use, environmental pollution, food, genetics, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, the lung cancer incidence is still growing rapidly in China, and there is an even higher incidence among the younger generation. One explanation may be the triple-neglect situation, in which medical policies that neglect prevention, diagnosis, and supportive care have increased patients' mortality and reduced their quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the efficiency of prevention and early diagnosis not only by focusing more attention on treatment but also by drawing more attention to supportive care for patients with lung cancer. Abstract:The incidence and mortality of cancer have been increasing alarmingly in China and worldwide[1].Unlike other chronic diseases such as metabolic,cardiovascular,and neuropathies,most cancers,especially metastatic ones,are still essentially uncontrollable in spite of significant progresses such as early diagnosis and immunotherapies.Fortunately,human cancer generally takes about 10-30 years to develop;hence there is a window of opportunity to prevent cancer before it becoming metastatic and radio/chemotherapeutic resistant.Indeed,prevention has made huge contribution to cancer control in the United States and some European countries,and chemoprevention is one of the most attractive strategies[2].

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plays an indispensable role in cancer prevention and treatment. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) is a key component of TCM and has been practiced for thousands of years. A number of naturally occurring products from Chinese herbs extracts exhibit strong inhibitory properties against carcinogenesis, including CHM single-herb extracts, CHM-derived active components, and CHM formulas (the polyherbal combinations), which regulate JAK/STAT, MAPK, and NF-ҡB pathways. The present review aims to report the cancer-preventive effect of CHM with evidence from cell-line, animal, epidemiological, and clinical experiments. We also present several issues that have yet to be resolved. In the future, cancer prevention by CHM will face unprecedented opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The innovation of modern diagnostics and chemotherapeutics has improved cancer patients' treatment and care, but advanced stages of cancer remain extremely challenging to treat. Therefore, new and creative approaches are needed to prevent and treat cancer. Herbal medicines have been used for many centuries to prevent diseases such as cancer. Funding agencies, such as the National Cancer Institute in the United States, have recently emphasized support for cancer chemoprevention research using natural phytochemicals and non-toxic drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to prevent or delay the onset of cancer. This perspective distills the latest in cancer chemoprevention research using bioactive components from fruits, vegetables, green tea and Traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM), focusing on Nrf2, epigenomic and cancer stem cell effects.

Abstract: A generally accepted definition of chemoprevention is the administration of purified chemical agents for the prevention of clinical cancer. This concept is commonly thought to have emerged a little over two decades ago and is attributed to cancer biologists who were elucidating the role of various natural substances and pharmacologic agents on the stepwise progression of cancer.26 However, a brief review of public health and medical advances over the twentieth century will reveal that the concept and application of chemoprevention for various disease processes evolved directly from the great successes of nutritional scientists in the early decades of this century. Regardless of the conceptual origins of cancer chemoprevention, the progress in identifying agents, testing them in preclinical models, followed by human intervention studies, has rapidly accelerated in recent years. The century ends with the success of the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) illustrating the ability of the anti-estrogen Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer in a cohort of women at high-risk.10 Indeed, it is our opinion that chemoprevention, tobacco control, and the application of early detection strategies provide the opportunity to reduce cancer mortality by at least 50% within a generation.11 The objective of this review is to provide the broad audience of cancer prevention investigators with a brief overview of the progress and future promise of cancer chemoprevention.

Abstract:Cancer is a major public health issue that seriously endangers the public health and social development of China. Future initiatives for cancer prevention and control should continue to adhere to the principle of prioritizing prevention, and comprehensively implement related prevention activities nationwide. This is critical to reducing cancer burden in Chinese residents, especially in the low- and middle-income populations and those living in areas that are less economically developed. In the past several decades, the international community has significantly reduced the incidence of related cancers through primary prevention measures such as tobacco control, improved occupational hygiene, and vaccination. China has also implemented a series of exploratory primary prevention measures among high-risk groups of cancer in specific areas including Xuanwei, Qidong, and Linxian, and achieved encouraging results. However, due to the low level of systematic awareness of cancer risk factors and the lack of awareness and ability of self-health management in Chinese residents, it is urgent to develop novel research tools and methods to further reveal the causes of cancer, and establish innovative mechanisms and systems of primary prevention of cancer at population and individual levels. Based on current status of the transformation of cancer spectrum and the development of digital intelligence, it would be beneficial to establish a smart digital system for primary cancer prevention service that can cover the entire population, integrating authoritative popular science education on primary prevention of cancer, individualized cancer risk assessment, and personalized health management assistant. This will improve primary cancer prevention among the Chinese general population and can help the sustainable development of cancer prevention and control in China.

Abstract:Worldwide, cancer is a growing epidemic that results in large social and economic burdens. Despite advances in current diagnosis and treatment, most of the prognosis in cancer patients remains poor. It is urgent to find alternative therapies with effective cancer prevention and treatment. Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) have been increasingly used worldwide for cancer prevention and treatment due to their privileged properties. CHMs are useful in the suppression of various types of cancers through different mechanisms of action. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs and circular RNAs, are closely involved in the cancer progression and development. Regulation of ncRNAs in tumor cells may be a useful pharmacological strategy for the cancer prevention and treatment. Substantial evidence exists that various phytochemicals from CHMs exert potent anticarcinogenic effects by regulating ncRNAs-related targets and signaling pathways. Herein, the purpose of this paper is to conclude the current understanding of phytochemicals from CHMs in ncRNAs-mediated cancer suppression and the molecular mechanisms. This review will help to provide beneficial clues related to the clinical use of CHMs in the cancer prevention and treatment and further promote new drug discovery against cancer.

Abstract:The rising cancer incidence rate in China poses a substantial public health concern, although there have been remarkable improvements in the country's cancer mortality and survival rates. In this Review, we outline the current landscape and future directions of cancer care and research in China. We discuss national screening programs and strategies for cancer detection and delve into the evolving landscape of cancer care, emphasizing the adoption of multidisciplinary, comprehensive treatment and precision oncology. Additionally, we examine changes in drug research and development policies that have enabled approval of new drugs. Finally, we look to the future, highlighting key priorities and identifying gaps. Effectively addressing challenges and seizing opportunities associated with cancer research in China will enable the development of targeted approaches to alleviate the global burden of cancer. The authors discuss how screening strategies, treatment approaches and precision oncology are evolving in China and outline trends and priorities in the drug development and regulatory landscape.

Abstract:<p>Cancer is the principal cause of death and a dominant public health problem which seriously threatening human life. Among various ways to treat cancer, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and natural products have outstanding anti‐cancer effects with their unique advantages of high efficiency and minimal side effects. Cell senescence is a physiological process of cell growth stagnation triggered by stress, which is an important line of defence against tumour development. In recent years, active ingredients of TCM and natural products, as an interesting research hotspot, can induce cell senescence to suppress the occurrence and development of tumours, by inhibiting telomerase activity, triggering DNA damage, inducing SASP, and activating or inactivating oncogenes. In this paper, the recent research progress on the main compounds derived from TCM and natural products that play anti‐cancer roles by inducing cell senescence is systematically reviewed, aiming to provide a reference for the clinical treatment of pro‐senescent cancer.</p>

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewCancer is a major public health problem in China, which involves both genetic mutations and epigenetic alterations. Recently, much effort has been exerted to identify epigenetic alterations responsible not only for the initiation of carcinogenesis but also for cancer progression and metastasis; traditional Chinese herbal medicines (TCHMs) have been shown to exert therapeutic effects by targeting epigenetic processes.Recent FindingsIn this review, we summarize the studies performed using TCHMs that have been reported to modulate epigenetic mechanisms. The bioactive compounds of TCHMs are listed, and their sources, efficacy, and potential mechanisms are described. Finally, TCHM formulas that have been shown to modulate epigenetic processes are also discussed.SummaryThis review discusses the progress of epigenetic alterations in cancer, highlighting the role of TCHMs as potential preventive/therapeutic agents for cancer management, and provides a basis and potential future direction for the development of novel therapeutic drugs.

Abstract:Recent studies have strongly indicated that certain daily-consumed dietary phytochemicals could have cancer protective effects against transgenic mice cancer models and cancers mediated by carcinogens, irradiations and carcinogenic metabolites derived from exogenous or endogenous sources. The cancer-protective effects elicited by these dietary compounds are believed to be due at least in part to the induction of cellular defense systems including the detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes system, as well as the inhibition of anti-inflammatory and anti-cell growth signaling pathways culminating in cell cycle arrest and/or cell-death. In this review, we summarize the potential mechanisms including the modulation of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB), cyclooxygenases-2 (COX-2), activator protein-1 (AP-1), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and the induction of phase II cellular detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes mediated mainly by the antioxidant response elements (ARE) within the promoter regions of these genes through nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a member of the Cap ‘n’ collar (CNC) family of the basic region-leucine zipper transcription factor. In addition, we also review several animal models of carcinogenesis and cancer chemopreventive efficacy studies of these animal models using dietary chemopreventive compounds. Finally, we discuss the cellular signaling cascades mediated by Nrf2, NF-κB, AP-1, MAPKs and COX-2, which have been considered to play pivotal roles in tumor initiation, promotion and progression processes, and could be promising molecular targets for the design of drugs targeting cancer prevention and therapy.

Abstract:Cancer has emerged as one of the world's most concerning health problems. The progression and metastasis mechanisms of cancer are complex, including metabolic disorders, oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, and intestinal microflora disorders. These pose significant challenges to our efforts to prevent and treat cancer and its metastasis. Natural drugs have a long history of use in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Many effective anti-tumor drugs, such as Paclitaxel, Vincristine, and Camptothecin, have been widely prescribed for the prevention and treatment of cancer. In recent years, a trend in the field of antitumor drug development has been to screen the active antitumor ingredients from natural drugs and conduct in-depth studies on the mechanisms of their antitumor activity. In this review, high-frequency keywords included in the literature of several common Chinese and English databases were analyzed. The results showed that five Chinese herbal medicines (Radix Salviae, Panax Ginseng C. A. Mey, Hedysarum Multijugum Maxim, Ganoderma, and Curcumaelongae Rhizoma) and three natural compounds (quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol) were most commonly used for the prevention and treatment of cancer and cancer metastasis. The main mechanisms of action of these active compounds in tumor-related research were summarized. Finally, we found that four natural compounds (dihydrotanshinone, sclareol, isoimperatorin, and girinimbin) have recently attracted the most attention in the field of anti-cancer research. Our findings provide some inspiration for future research on natural compounds against tumors and new insights into the role and mechanisms of natural compounds in the prevention and treatment of cancer and cancer metastasis.

Abstract:Cancer is a major factor threatening human health and life safety, and there is a lack of safe and effective therapeutic drugs. Intervention and prevention in premalignant process are effective ways to reverse carcinogenesis and prevent cancer from occurring. Plant natural products are rich in sources and are a promising source for cancer chemoprevention. This article reviews the chemopreventive effects of natural products, especially focused on polyphenols, flavonoids, monoterpene and triterpenoids, sulfur compounds, and cellulose. Meanwhile, the main mechanisms include induction of apoptosis, antiproliferation and inhibition of metastasis are briefly summarized. In conclusion, this article provides evidence for natural products remaining a prominent source of cancer chemoprevention.
