Early Chinese and Indian Immigrants in South Africa: Similarities and Dissimilarities

Abstract:Immigrants are both product and producer of globalization.They have made a great contribution to the development of the modern world.From the early time,both Chinese and Indians went to settle in Africa.The two groups have similarities and differences.They came across the same obstacles in a strange land in terms of ethnic identity,economic hardship,social status and political right;faced the same difficulties and had to solve the same problems in order to survive.Grouped together as "Asiatic" at the early period,both were susceptible to racial discrimination from the very beginning.There are dissimilarities between them as well.The Indians were regarded as one of the distinct racial groups during the apartheid period,but the Chinese were not.The Indians were far more in number than the Chinese since their migration within the British Empire was normal.The Indians had more religious congregational places and social organizations.In addition,more Indian intellectuals came to South Africa and played the role of organizers in the Indian community.However,in the fight against the apartheid regime,the Indians and Chinese united with other Africans and are now enjoying the fruits of the victory.
