Abstract:The reactive oxygen species(ROS) such as superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging(activities) based on 8 different cyclic nitroxides radicals,including 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy,(2,2,5,)5-tetramethylpyrrolin-1-oxy and 2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidine-1-oxy derivatives,were detected by UV-Vis spectrophotometry.The electrochemical properties of those compounds were studied by the cyclic voltammetry method.In addition,different properties caused by different molecular structures of the compounds and the relationship between the ROS scavenging activities and the electrochemical properties were discussed.The result indicated that the different ring sizes and ring substituents would influence the characterization of the compounds and the superoxide radical scavenging activity of the nitroxides is related with redox property of the compounds.

Abstract:Aims: In this article we report our recent developments in the field of electron paramagnetic resonance oximetry. Materials & methods: Novel synthesized ferrocenyl nitroxide radicals (FcN)-1–6 were evaluated to determine their electron paramagnetic resonance oxygen responsiveness and reduction resistance. The 3-ferrocenyl-N-(oxyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-4-yl) butanamide radical (FcN-6), with outstanding electron paramagnetic resonance oxygen sensitivity, was encapsulated in Pluronic F-127 polymeric nanoparticles. Results: The nanoparticles exhibited good oxygen sensitivity, long-term stability of responsiveness, targeting to lung, liver and tumor, and low toxicity. Conclusion: These features make this novel nanoparticle especially valuable for mapping O2 concentrations in the body and monitoring the oxygen level inside tissues.
Experimental and computational study on antioxidant activity and molecular properties of novel ferrocenyl Schiff bases

Abstract:In this study, antioxidant and molecular properties of some important novel ferrocenyl Schiff bases were studied. The 4-Ferrocenyl aniline synthetic pathway was chosen as the general procedure for the synthesis of Schiff bases. Two experimental techniques, UV–Visible spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, and one theoretical DFT method was employed to find out their antioxidant activity and molecular properties of some novel ferrocenyl Schiff bases and compared it with standard antioxidant (Ascorbic acid). Maximum wavelength, extinction coefficient, IC30 and IC50 were estimated by using UV–Visible spectroscopy. For theoretical investigations, computational Amsterdam density function software was employed to study the molecular properties and reaction parameters based on density functional theory calculations. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements in electrochemical experiments were done at room temperature while diffusion coefficient was estimated by using CV. UV–Vis spectra of these compounds exhibited similar peaks with greater intensity ranges from 312 nm to 314 nm and smaller intensity ranges 471 nm to 473 nm which occurred because of the only substituent R (naphthoxy, phenoxy and phenoxy) in these compounds. Registered Amsterdam density function was utilized to determine the optimized structure, FTIR spectra, UV–Visible spectra, HOMO, LUMO, dipole moment, ionization potential, electron affinity, band gap, hardness, chemical potential and electrophility index. The overall electrode processes were found to be diffusion controlled and the novel compounds showed appreciable antioxidant activities.

Abstract:A series of novel 5-alkyl-2-ferrocenyl-6,7-dihydropyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrazin-4(5H)-one derivatives were synthesized by the reaction of ethyl 1-(2-bromoethyl)-3-ferrocenyl-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxylate with non-aromatic primary amines in one-pot procedure and characterized by IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS and X-ray diffraction analysis. The effects of all the compounds on A549 cell growth were investigated. The results showed that all compounds had almost inhibitory effects on the growth of A549 cells.

Abstract:Fifteen new ferrocene derivatives containing 1H-1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized in various yields by the condensation of ferrocenecarboxaldehyde with 1-aryl-3-(1H-1,2,4-triazo-1-yl)-propen-1-ones in toluene. Their structures have been confirmed by H-1 NMR, IR, MS and elemental analysis. In addition, the crystal structure of 41 was determined. Abstract:Novel paramagnetic materials (3a, 3b, 4a and 4b) based on heterocyclic dyes (2a and 2b) and one stable nitroxide radical (4-NH(2)-TEMPO) were synthesized. EI-MS, elemental analysis and FT-IR spectral data confirmed the structures of the newly synthesized compounds. In addition, the cyclic voltammetry, the antioxidant activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging properties of these compounds are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:We report a series of ferrocene-based derivatives and their corresponding oxidized forms in which the introduction of simple electron donating groups like methyl or tert-butyl units on cyclopentadienyl-rings afford great tunability of Fe+III/Fe+II redox potentials from +0.403 V down to −0.096 V versus saturated calomel electrode. The spin forbidden d–d transitions of ferrocene derivatives shift slightly toward the blue region with an increasing number of electron-donating groups on the cyclopentadienyl-rings with very little change in absorptivity values, whereas the ligand-to-metal transitions of the corresponding ferricinium salts move significantly to the near-IR region. The electron-donating groups also contribute in the strengthening of electron density of Fe+III d-orbitals, which therefore improves the chemical stability against the oxygen reaction. Further, density functional theory calculations show a reducing trend in outer shell reorganization energy with an increasing number of the electron donating units.

Abstract:To develop more potent small molecules with enhanced free radical scavenger properties, we designed and synthesized a series of nitronyl nitroxide derivatives 4a–h. A lead compound 4f was discovered based on Ach-induced vascorelaxation assay. Further chemical modification based on this scaffold provided a new series of 2-substituted phenylnitronyl nitroxide derivatives 6a–s. The newly synthesized compounds 6a–s possess improved radical scavenger’s activity based on PC12 cell survival assay. Compounds 6g,n,o, and s are some of the most potent compounds in terms of NO, H2O2, and OH scavenging ability. 2-Substitued phenylnitronyl nitroxides had a higher radical scavenging activity with the electron-donating group (EDG). In contrast, the introduction of electron-withdrawing group (EWG) to the aromatic ring led to a dramatic decrease in its radical scavenging activity. These results suggest that the electron-donating group (EDG) of the aromatic ring may be an important factor influencing the radical scavenging behavior of these compounds, and the potency of free radical scavenging activity largely depended on the position and electronic properties of the phenyl ring substituents. The enhanced radical scavenging capacities of the novel 2-substituted nitronyl nitroxides may be potential drug leads against the deleterious action of ROS (reactive oxygen species)/RNS (reactive nitrogen species).

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff-base complexes, [(C10H6N2)CN(C6H4)nNC(CH3)FcC(CH3)NC6H4) nN(C10H6N2)] (n = 0, 1, 2), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as the starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, vis). The cyclic voltammograms of the complexes have shown reversible one-electronic oxidation and reduction. The derivatives can quench the luminescence of Ru(bpy)3P2+ efficiently, with quenching rate constants of ca 109 mol−1 s−1 dm3 and the quenching process is a bimolecular energy transfer process.

Abstract:The recent discoveries of both dicationic and monoanionic ferrocene derivatives throw light on the effect of the substituents on the C 5 ring as well as the choice of redox agents and solvent system in the preparation of previously believed to be difficult synthetic targets.These oxidized and reduced forms of ferrocene are of interest to spectroscopists, magnetochemists, and theoreticians.The reversible redox reactions of iodine coupled with various anodes enable the fabrication of advanced rechargeable batteries.This Minireview summarizes the current understanding of the fundamental redox chemistry of iodine, with a special emphasis on the strategies for enhancing battery performance.

Abstract:Ferrociphenols are characterized by the presence of a biologically active redox motif [ferrocenyl-ene-p-phenol], and are known to exhibit anticancer properties. Recent studies have identified a new series of ferrociphenols that bear an imido-type heterocycle at the terminus of a short alkyl chain, and which showed very strong antiproliferativity against multiple types of cancer cells. This work describes the syntheses and an SAR study of ferrociphenols bearing a diversity-based range of nitrogen-containing substituents on the alkyl chain. Preliminary oxidative metabolism experiments and ROS-related bioactivity measurements were also carried out to probe the origin of the cytotoxicity of the imido-ferrociphenols. Furthermore, an interesting dimerization phenomenon was observed in the X-ray crystal structure of the 2,3-naphthalenedicarboximidopropyl-ferrocidiphenol, 21, which may be a factor in decreasing its rate of oxidation to form the corresponding quinone methide, 21-QM, thereby affecting its antitumor activity. These results suggest that both the formation rate and the stability of QMs could affect the antiproliferative activity of their ferrociphenol precursors.

Abstract:Two novel metal-organic macrocycles (M-Fe and M-Cu) were constructed using the flexible and redox-active ferrocene ligand. The macrocycles effectively quenched the fluorescence of organic dyes and exhibited the capability to trigger the photoinduced electron transfer. Due to relatively lower reduction potentials, M-Cu exhibited better catalytic features for proton reduction and could better catalyze the reduction of nitro compounds. The large size of the substrates leads to a decreased efficiency in the nitro reduction process. The Michaelis-Menten mechanism was used to verify the photocatalytic system, which revealed the importance of the interaction between substrate and catalyst. CCDC: 2166465, M-Cu; 2166466, M-Fe.

Abstract:A series of novel ferrocene-containing Schiff base complexes, (C10H6N2)CNNCRFc, (C10H6N2)CNC6H4NCRFc and (C10H6N2)CNC6H4C6 H4NCRFc (R: H, CH3), have been synthesized using 1,10-phenanthroline and ferrocene as starting materials. The derivatives were characterized by elemental analyses and spectral data (IR, UV, MS and 1H NMR). The single-crystal X-ray structure is presented for (C10H6N2)CNNCHFc (1). The cyclic voltammograms of complex 1 have shown reversible one-electron oxidation and two-step one-electron reduction.

Abstract:In this study, four ferrocenyl indenyl derivatives, C9H7–C≡C–Fc (1), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–Fc (2), C9H7–C≡C–Ph–C≡C–Fc (3), and C9H7–Ph–C≡C–Fc (4) (where C9H7=indenyl; Fc=C5H5FeC5H4; Ph=C6H5), have been synthesized by Sonogashira and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, and FT-IR, 1H, 13C-NMR, and MS spectroscopic methods, respectively. The molecular structures of 1, 2, and 4 were determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. Two molecules appeared in the crystal structure of 4, and they interact through an intermolecular hydrogen bond. The electrochemical redox potential differences in 1–4 were investigated using cyclic voltammetry and calculations.

Abstract:C–H bond functionalisation has developed into a powerful synthetic methodology that is applicable to a wide array of substrates, including organometallic compounds. In this study, racemic, planar-chiral 1,2-dihydroferroceno[c]isoquinoline and analogous helical compounds with one or two additional ortho-fused benzene rings were synthesised by palladium-catalysed C–H bond activation/cyclisation of N-[(bromoaryl)methyl]-N-(methylsulfonyl)aminoferrocenes. These starting materials readily accessible from FcNHSO2Me (Fc = ferrocenyl) and appropriate vicinal bromo-(bromomethyl)arenes. The racemic products were successfully enantioseparated using chiral chromatography. The representative compound, 1,2-dihydro-2-(methylsulfonyl)ferroceno[c]isoquinoline, was converted to the unstable ferroceno[c]isoquinoline and further used to prepare a heterobimetallic, Fe/Ru bis-metallocene complex via a reaction with [(η5-C5Me5)Ru(MeCN)3][PF6]. All compounds were characterised by spectroscopic methods (NMR, FTIR, and UV‒vis) and mass spectrometry; additionally, in most cases, crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis . Moreover, the representative compounds were examined by cyclic voltammetry, and the results were rationalised with the aid of DFT calculations.

Abstract:Novel chiral N,O-ferrocenyl ligands, in which N and O groups were attached to two different Cp rings of ferrocene, were synthesized from easily available ferrocene, and applied to the asymmetric diethylzinc addition to aldehydes. High chemical yields and good enantioselectivities (up to 90.9% ee) were obtained by using ferrocene ligand 6.

Abstract:The hydroxyl radical(·OH) scavenging activity of ten ferrocene derivates(FcDs) were evaluated by chemiluminescence assay.The electrochemical properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry method.In addition,the relationship between substituent structure and ·OH scavenging activity was discussed.The results indicated that the ·OH scavenging activity was influenced by the conjugative effect,conductive effect and volume of substituents.The FcDs with conjugative or electron-withdrawing substituents,have more positive E_(1/2) and weaker ·OH scavenging activity,while the FcDs with electron-donating substituents,have more negative E_(1/2) and stronger ·OH scavenging activity.

Abstract:Ferrocenyl conjugated oxazepine/quinoline derivatives were presented through the reaction of hexadehydro-Diels-Alder (HDDA) generated arynes with ferrocenyl oxazolines under mild conditions via ring-expanding or rearrangement processes. Water molecule participated in this unexpected rearrangement process to produce quinoline skeletons, and DFT calculations supported a ring-expanding and intramolecular hydrogen migration process for the formation of oxazepine derivatives. Two variants of this chemistry, expanded the reactivity between ferrocenyl conjugated substances and arynes, further providing an innovative approach for the synthesis of ferrocene derivatives.
