Abstract:Objective To study characteristics of regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) in unipolar and bipolar depressive disorders.Method Thirteen unmedicated unipolar depressed patients and eighteen unmedicated bipolar depressed patients and nineteen healthy control subjects were recruited.SPECT was performed to detect rCBF in patients and controls.Results There were significant differences in rCBF in the frontal lobe among those groups [left:(52.36 ± 3.29),(50.65 ± 3.06),(61.06 ± 7.73),P < 0.01];right:(59.13 ± 4.52),(57.92 ± 3.46),(63.01 ± 7.46),P < 0.05)].The rCBF was decreased in uipolar and bipolar groups compared with controls(P < 0.05).But the difference in rCBF was not significant between unipolar and bipolar groups(P > 0.05);There were significant differences in rCBF in the left temporal lobe,right basa ganglia among those three groups.Among those three groups,rCBF was lower in bipolar depression group than in unipolar depression and control groups(P < 0.05).The left and right frontal rCBF in unipolar depression group was negatively correlated with Hamilton rating scale for depression(HAMD) total score(r = 0.65,P < 0.05;r = 0.61,P < 0.05).Similarly,the left and right frontal rCBF in bipolar depression group was negatively associated with HAMD total score(r =-0.77,P < 0.01;r =-0.73,P < 0.01).Conclusion Unipolar depression and bipolar depression may have different low rCBF pattern which warrants further investigation.
