Cross-civilization Studies:Keep Pace with the Orientation of the Academic World and the Academic Frontiers

Abstract:Cross-civilization studies has become an academic trend all over the world with an emphasis on the heterogeneity of different civilizations. The cross-civilization studies in comparative literature has the mutual complement as its ultimate goal while interpreting the heterogeneity of different civilizations. Cross-civilization studies is different from the ideological trend of globalization because it pursues the cultural ideal of “generality in differences” or “generality with differences”. At present, three problems as the academic frontiers can help promote the cross-civilization studies in Chinese comparative literature: 1. the theoretical problem of “Lendingism” or “discovery of the Orient and export of (our) culture; 2. the problems in comparative poetics concerning the convertibility and the un-convertibility of heterogeneous civilizations; 3. “aphasia” of Chinese culture viewed from the perspective of cross-civilization studies.
