Abstract:Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles uniformly loaded on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized by a wet chemistry method, and then carbon coated Fe3C nanoparticles supported by MWCNTs were prepared by heat-treatments subsequently in nitrogen at 600 degC and in acetylene atmosphere at 500 degC. The as-prepared nanoparticles were all single crystals with a size distribution ranging from 10 to 60nm upon TEM and XRD measurements. The magnetic properties of these two kinds of nanoparticles were measured using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature. The results show that above materials are useful for magnetic materials, and the method to produce magnetic nanoparticles coated with graphite is rather simple

Abstract:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize magnetic nanoparticle and carbon nanotube (CNT) core-shell nanostructures, such as CoO/CNTs and Mn3O4/CNTs, by the nonaqueous solvothermal treatment of metal carbonyl on CNT templates using hexane as the solvent. The morphological and structural characterizations indicate that numerous cubic CoO or tetragonal Mn3O4 nanoparticles are deposited on the surfaces of the CNTs to form CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. It is revealed that the hydrophobic interaction between nanoparticles and CNTs in hexane plays the critical role for the formation of CNT-based core-shell nanostructures. A physical property measurement system (PPMS-9, Quantum Design) analysis indicates that the CoO/CNT core-shell nanostructures show weak ferromagnetic performance at 300 K due to the ferromagnetic Co clusters and the uncompensated surface spin states, while the Mn3O4/CNT core-shell nanostructures display ferromagnetic behavior at low temperature (34.5 K), which transforms into paramagnetic behavior with increasing temperature.

Abstract:Spinel ferrite Cu1-xZnxFe2O4 nanofibers over a compositional range 0 < x < 1 were prepared by electrospinning combined with sol-gel method. The influence of Zn2+ ions substitution on morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of copper ferrite has been investigated. The results show that surface of CuFe2O4 nanofibers consists of small open porosity, while surface of doped nanofibers reveals smooth and densified nature. With increasing Zn substitution, saturation magnetization initially increases and then decreases with a maximum value of 58.4 emu/g at x = 0.4, coercivity and square ratio all decrease. The influence of substitution on magnetic properties is related with the cation distraction and exchange interactions between spinel lattices.

Abstract:Ferric ions could be attached on the surface of oxidized carbon nanotubes(CNTs) by immersing method and their chemical properties were investigated in nitrogen and acetylene atmosphere at high temperature.Ferroferric oxide(Fe_3O_4) nanocrystals were formed on CNTs when they were annealed at(600 °C) in nitrogen atmosphere.Subsequently,cementite(Fe_3C) nanocrystals encapsulated in graphene layers were obtained during reaction with acetylene at 600 °C.The graphene layers are effective for preventing nanocrystals from oxidization in the open air.High-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses prove that ferric ions-modified CNT is an excellent candidate and that it can be used to fabricate single crystalline Fe_3O_4 and Fe_3C magnetic nanocrystals by simple processes.

Abstract:By controlling the pyrolysis temperature, core/shell materials with Fe3O4 encapsulated in carbon nanocages (Fe3O4@CNCs) and Fe encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (Fe@CNTs) were synthesized selectively from acetylene using Fe2O3 nanoparticles as catalyst in chemical vapor deposition. Scanning electron microscopic study showed that the efficiency of generating Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs was high, exceeding 95%. Transmission electron microscopic study confirmed the high selectivity to Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs, with the former having morphology similar to that of the catalyst particles. With Fe3O4 and Fe nanoparticles tightly wrapped in graphitic layers, the obtained Fe3O4@CNCs and Fe@CNTs materials show high stability and good magnetic properties.

Abstract:In this paper, Fe3O4 nanofibers with average diameters of 100nm were successfully synthesized by electrospinning of PVP/Fe(NO3)·9H2O composite solution followed by calcinations and reduction. The resulting Fe3O4 nanofibers were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), transmission Mössbauer spectra (MS), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). These nanofibers showed a cubic structure and uniform and continuous morphology. The Fe3O4 nanofibers possessed a saturation magnetization Ms of 57.6emu/g. A large coercivity Hc of 188.4Oe together with a high remanence ratio Mr/Ms=0.28 is observed, which result from the shape anisotropy.

Abstract:The present work describes a procedure for the preparation of iron oxide and carbide nanoparticles in carbon nanotube (CNT) matrix using the wet impregnation method and subsequent heat treatment in different atmosphere. In this way, two specific composites were produced with magnetite and cementite phase particles dispersed in CNTs, respectively, and cementite particles were encapsulated in graphene shells. As-prepared nanoparticles were all single crystalline and characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM and X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties of the resultant products were studied using vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature.

Abstract:FexCo81-xNi19/CNTs nanocomposites with controllable composition were fabricated using wet chemistry method.The samples were characterized by XRD,TEM,SAED,EDX spectroscopy and VSM.The results show that FexCo81-xNi19 alloy nanoparticles attached on CNTs are granular and dispersed uniformly.During the composition range(x=21,33,46),fcc and bcc structure coexist obviously.The magnetic properties of FexCo81-xNi19 alloy nanoparticles vary with alloy composition.With increasing Fe content,Hc decreases while Ms increases dramaticly.The alloys of a composition of Fe46Co35Ni19 own the optimal magnetic property.

Abstract:The structural evolution and magnetic properties of nanostructured copper ferrite, CuFe2O4, have been investigated by x-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetization measurements. Nanometre-sized CuFe2O4 particles with a partially inverted spinel structure were synthesized by high-energy ball milling in an open container with grain sizes ranging from 9 to 61 nm. Superparamagnetic relaxation effects have been observed in milled samples at room temperature by Mossbauer and magnetization measurements. At 15 K, the average hyperfine held of CuFe2O4 decreases with decreasing average grain size while the coercive force, shift of the hysteresis loop, magnetic hardness, and saturation magnetization at 4.2 K increase with decreasing average grain size. At 295 K the coercive-held dependence on the average grain size is described, with particles showing superparamagnetic relaxation effects. At 4.2 K the relationship between the coercive field and average grain size can be attributed to the change of the effective anisotropy constant of the particles. The interface anisotropy of nanostructured CuFe2O4 is found to be about 1.8(1) x 10(5) erg cm(-3). Although spin canting was present, approximately 20% enhancement of the saturation magnetization in CuFe2O4 nanoparticles was observed, which could be explained by a cation redistribution induced by milling. The high-held magnetization irreversibility and shift of the hysteresis loop detected in our samples have been assigned to a spin-disordered phase, which has a spin-freezing temperature of approximately 50 K.

Abstract:A Fe nanowires-filled amorphous carbon nanotubes (FeNW-filled a-CNTs) array was synthesized by sequential growth of electrodeposited Fe nanowires and subsequent chemical vapour deposition of amorphous CNTs in the nanochannels of alumina template. Structural characterizations of as-prepared FeNW-filled a-CNTs were carried out via field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental mapping, high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and Raman scattering. The formation mechanism of such Fe/C nanoheterostructure was proposed according to the detailed HRTEM analyses. Furthermore, the room temperature magnetic property of the as-prepared FeNW-filled a-CNTs array was also investigated, and obvious anisotropic behaviour in magnetization was observed.

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3C and α-Fe ultrafine particles were prepared by laser-induced pyrolysis of Fe(CO)5 and C2H4. It is found that after passivation, the Fe3C particles exhibit a high saturation magnetization of 132 emu/g compared to that of the α-Fe particle, 95 emu/g. By determining the oxygen content and the present states of oxygen the particles contained, it is found that not only oxygen content of the α-Fe particles is much higher than that of the Fe3C particles, but the oxygen is in differnt states for the two ultrafine particles. The oxygen present on the Fe3C particles is primarily in absorbed form, compared to chemically combined oxygen as in the α-Fe particles. Thin amorphous carbon layers, formed on the surfaces of the Fe3C particles, inhibit oxidation of the Fe3C and therefore result in higher saturation magnetization achieved by Fe3C particles, relative to the α-Fe particles on which no carbon layer was present.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based magnetic nanocomposites have attracted significant research interest owing to their great potentialities in various technological fields. In this investigation, a kind of novel Fe3O4/CNTs magnetic nanocomposites were prepared by in situ chemical precipitation using oleate as reactant and surfactant at the liquid–liquid interface of cyclohexane/ethanol/water mixture solvent. The as-prepared samples were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and vibration sample magnetometry (VSM). Results indicated that the Fe3O4/CNTs magnetic nanocomposites dispersed well in organic medium were prepared organic medium, were prepared. The magnetic nanocomposites were proved to be superparamagnetic with coercive force of 3.69Oe. A mechanism scheme was proposed to illustrate the formation process of the magnetic nanocomposites.

Abstract:FeCo alloy nanoparticles were coated onto the iron-filled carbon nanotubes by an electroless plating method. As-prepared samples were then annealed at different temperatures. The morphologies and structures of the samples were characterized, and the relationship between the soft magnetic properties and the Fe/Co ratios of the samples was established. The microwave absorbing characteristics of the samples were also evaluated. The results show that the soft magnetic characteristics of iron-filled carbon nanotubes can be improved after being coated with FeCo alloy nanoparticles and then heat treated, which results in more effective microwave absorption.

Abstract:Due to their special qualities, core-shell nanomaterials with two or more functionalities have drawn a lot of attention. Core-shell materials exhibit stronger combined electrical, optical, magnetic, and electronic characteristics than single-component nanomaterials thanks to the creation of the core-shell structure and the synergistic interaction between components. However, the formation of core-shell structures is often difficult due to the incompatibility between components, especially for lattice-mismatched core-shell structures. In this study, CoFe@CoFe2O4-N-C nanoparticles (~150nm) were successfully prepared via an ultrasonic atomization coupling pyrolysis process. This exhibits higher coercivity (108Oe), saturation magnetization (52.3emu/g) and Curie temperature (>400K) than CoFe nanoparticles. At the same time, it exhibits high UV–Vis and infrared absorption characteristics and has good electronic properties as a direct band gap semiconductor material (bandgap of 2.87eV). These characteristics suggest that CoFe@CoFe2O4-N-C NPs have a lot of potential in sectors like magneto-optics and absorbent materials.

Abstract:Ni 1-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 / MWCNTs nanocomposites（x=0.4,0.5,0.6） with controllable composition have been successfully fabricated via microwave-assisted polyol route using triethylene glycol solution（TREG） as solvent.The structure and morphology of the final products were characterized by XRD,SEM,TEM and EDX.The magnetic properties were measured by VSM.The influence of microwave power and microwave time on loading has also been investigated.The results show that the spinel Ni1-xZnxFe2O4nanoparticles with a facecentered cubic structure appear to be a monodisperse distribution on MWCNTs.The average sizes of the nanoparticles were about 6nm.The magnetic properties of Ni 1-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 / MWCNTs nanocomposites vary with ferrite composition.The saturation magnetization（M s） of Ni 1-x Zn x Fe 2 O 4 / MWCNTs nanocomposites increases firstly and then decrease with Zn content increasing.M s reaches a maximum value when xequals to 0.5.The nanocomposites exhibit low coercivity（H c） at room temperature,which can be a typical characteristic of superparamagnetic.
Preparation, Electromagnetic and Enhanced Microwave Absorption Properties of Fe Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Using hollow Fe2O3 particles as the catalyst, the core/shell structured Fe/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrid could be synthesized by a chemical vapor deposition method without the hydrogen reduction process. Based on the obtained results, a possible growth mechanism of the Fe/CNT hybrid was discussed. And the investigations of electromagnetic and microwave absorption performances indicate that a minimum reflection loss (RL) value of the obtained sample is ca. -40.15 dB at 17.15 GHz with a matching thickness of 1.5 mm, and the RL value below -20 dB can be obtained in the whole frequency range (1.0-18 GHz) with the sample thickness varies from 1.3 to 10.0 mm. The results demonstrate that a simple and environment-friendly route has been proposed for the production of core/shell structured carbon nanohybrid. The obtained Fe/CNT hybrid exhibits excellent microwave absorption properties and has potential applications in thin thickness and light-weight microwave absorbers. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In the present work, different synthesis procedures have been demonstrated to fill carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with Fe1-xNix alloy nanoparticles (x = 0.33, 0.5). CNTs act as templates for the encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles, and provide a protective shield against oxidation as well as prevent nanoparticles agglomeration. By variation of the reaction parameters, the purity of the samples, degree of filling, the composition and size of filling nanoparticles have been tailored and therefore the magnetic properties. The samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Bright-field (BF) TEM tomography, X-ray powder diffraction, superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The Fe1-xNix-filled CNTs show a huge enhancement in the coercive fields compared to the corresponding bulk materials, which make them excellent candidates for several applications such as magnetic storage devices.

Abstract:Core–shell Fe3O4@C magnetic nanoparticles which are of great interest for research have a widely applied prospect. However, people know little about the optical and magnetic properties of the small-size Fe3O4@C nanoparticles due to the difficulty of uniformly coating small size Fe3O4 nanoparticles. In this paper, the influence of carbon shell coating on the optical and magnetic properties of small size Fe3O4 nanoparticles was presented. Carbon coating can strengthen the absorption intensity in the UV–visible light region through the introduction of oxygen defects on the surface of the nanoparticles by nitric acid treatment. Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@C nanoparticles both display typical superparamagnetic behavior in the high-temperature regime and a blocked state at low temperature from hysteresis loop, zero-field cooled and field cooled curves. Carbon coating reduce the surface uniaxial anisotropy, thus the average blocking temperature <TB> decreases from 59 K of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to 50 K of Fe3O4@C nanoparticles.

Abstract:In this work, a successful synthesis of magnetic cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles is presented. The synthesized CoFe2O4 nanoparticles have a spherical shape and highly monodisperse in the selected solvent. The effect of different reaction conditions such as temperature, reaction time and varying capping agents on the phase and morphology is studied. Scanning transmission electron microscopy showed that the size of these nanoparticles can be controlled by varying reaction conditions. Both X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy corroborate the formation of CoFe2O4 spinel structure with cubic symmetry. Due to optimized reaction parameters, each nanoparticle was shown to be a single magnetic domain with diameter ranges from 6 to 16 nm. Finally, the magnetic investigations showed that the obtained nanoparticles are superparamagnetic with a small coercivity value of about 315 Oe and a saturation magnetization of 58 emu/g at room temperature. These results make the cobalt ferrite nanoparticles promising for advanced magnetic nanodevices and biomagnetic applications.
