Abstract:Here, we revisit the bounded batch scheduling problem with nonidentical job sizes on single and parallel identical machines, with the objective of minimizing the makespan. For the single machine case, we present an algorithm which calls an online algorithm P (chosen arbitrarily) for the one-dimensional bin-packing problem as a sub-procedure, and prove that its worst-case ratio is the same as the absolute performance ratio of P. Hence, there exists an algorithm with worst-case ratio 17/10, which is better than any known upper bound on this problem. For the parallel machines case, we prove that there does not exist any polynomial-time algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than 2 unless P = NP, even if all jobs have unit processing time. Then we present an algorithm with worst-case ratio arbitrarily close to 2. (C) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:We consider the problem of scheduling jobs on-line on parallel batch processing machines with dynamic job arrivals to minimize makespan. We are given m identical batch processing machines, each of which can handle up to B (the capacity of a machine) jobs simultaneously. The jobs that are processed together form a batch, and all jobs in a batch start and complete at the same time. The processing time of a batch is a constant, which is independent of the number and identity of the jobs. Each job becomes available at its arrival time, which is unknown in advance. First we deal with the unbounded case where the capacity of the batch processing machines is infinite, and derive an optimal on-line algorithm with competitive ratio 1+ g m , where g m >0 is determined by (1+ g m ) m +1 = g m +2. We then consider the bounded case where the capacity B of the batch processing machines is bounded. We provide an on-line algorithm with competitive ratio (\sqrt{5}+1)/2 (the golden ratio) and prove that the result is the best possible for all m .

Abstract:Abstract Integration of production and distribution operations at the scheduling level is one of the most important issues concerned in recent years in supply chain management. We investigate the scheduling problem with job delivery coordination. Concretely, we are given a set of jobs with non-identical processing times and non-identical sizes to be first processed by two parallel-identical machines and then delivered to a common customer by a single vehicle, which has a limited capacity that can carry up to a fixed total size of jobs in one batch. The objective is to minimize the makespan, ie, the time when all the jobs have reached the customer and the delivery vehicle has returned to the machine. The problem does not admit a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than unless P = NP. By introducing some novel ideas and new methods, including algorithms solving multiple knapsack problem as subprocedures and the rediscovery of the profound nature of the bin-packing algorithm, we propose a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio arbitrary close to . The algorithm, acquired after long-term research containing many earlier related works, is the first algorithm for this kind of problems and its theoretical performance is nearly best.

Abstract:We study the problem of on-line scheduling of parallel jobs on two machines. The jobs are parallel in the sense that each of them specifies the number of processors, in this case 1 or 2, required for simultaneous processing. The jobs are presented one by one. Upon receiving a job, we must assign the job to a time slot in the schedule before the next job is presented. No re-assignment is allowed. The goal is to minimize the makespan of the final schedule. There is a straightforward algorithm which achieves a competitive ratio of 2. In this paper we show that no on-line algorithm can have a competitive ratio less than 1+2/3 (≈1.816). We also study two special cases of the problem: (i) Jobs arrive in a non-decreasing order of processing times where we give an optimal algorithm with competitive ratio 3/2; (ii) Jobs arrive in a non-increasing order of processing times where we show that no on-line algorithm has a competitive ratio less than 9/7 and give a greedy algorithm with a competitive ratio 4/3.

Abstract:AbstractWe deal with the problem of minimizing makespan on a single batch processing machine. In this problem, each job has both processing time and size (capacity requirement). The batch processing machine can process a number of jobs simultaneously as long as the total size of these jobs being processed does not exceed the machine capacity. The processing time of a batch is just the processing time of the longest job in the batch. An approximation algorithm with worst‐case ratio 3/2 is given for the version where the processing times of large jobs (with sizes greater than 1/2) are not less than those of small jobs (with sizes not greater than 1/2). This result is the best possible unless P = NP. For the general case, we propose an approximation algorithm with worst‐case ratio 7/4. Abstract:We study on-line scheduling of equal-length jobs on parallel machines. Our main result is an algorithm with competitive ratio decreasing to e/(e - 1), approximate to 1.58 as the number of machine increases. For m >= 3, this is the first algorithm better than 2-competitive greedy algorithms:Our algorithm has an additional property called immediate decision: at each time, it is immediately decided for each newly released job if it will be scheduled, and if so, then also the time interval and machine where it is scheduled is fixed and cannot be changed later. We show that for two machines, no deterministic algorithm with immediate decision is better than 1.8-competitive; this lower bound shows that our algorithm is optimal for m = 2 in this restricted model. We give some additional lower bounds for algorithms with immediate decision.

Abstract:In real world situations, most scheduling problems occur neither as complete off-line nor as complete on-line models. Most likely, a problem arises as an on-line model with some partial information. In this article, we consider such a model. We study the scheduling problem P ( n 1 , n 2 ), where two groups of jobs are to be scheduled. The first job group is available beforehand. As soon as all jobs in the first group are assigned, the second job group appears. The objective is to minimize the longest job completion time (makespan). We show a lower bound of 3/2 even for very special cases. Best possible algorithms are presented for a number of cases. Furthermore, a heuristic is proposed for the general case. The main contribution of this paper is to discuss the impact of the quantity of available information in designing an on-line algorithm. It is interesting to note that the absence of even a little bit information may significantly affect the performance of an algorithm.

Abstract:We consider the online unbounded batch scheduling problems on m identical machines subject to release dates and delivery times. Jobs arrive over time and the characteristics of jobs are unknown until their arrival times. Jobs can be processed in a common batch and the batch capacity is unbounded. Once the processing of a job is completed it is independently delivered to the destination. The objective is to minimize the time by which all jobs have been delivered. For each job J_j , its processing time and delivery time are denoted by p_j and q_j , respectively. We first consider a restricted model: the jobs have agreeable processing and delivery times, i.e., for any two jobs J_i and J_j p_i>p_j implies q_i≥ q_j . For the restrict case, we provide a best possible online algorithm with competitive ratio 1+α _m , where α _m>0 is determined by α _m^2+mα _m=1 . Then we present an online algorithm with a competitive ratio of 1+2/⌊√(m)⌋ for the general case.

Abstract:This paper considers a single batch processing machine scheduling problem with non-identical two-dimensional job sizes. Jobs may be rotated but must be placed orthogonally without overlapping in the machine. The machine can simultaneously process a batch of jobs as long as its two-dimensional capacity is not exceeded. The processing time of a batch is defined by the longest processing time of all jobs in the batch. The objective is to assign jobs to batches considering the machine capacity constraint such that the makespan is minimized. An improved mixed integer programming formulation is proposed to reduce the solution space. 16 heuristics, combining four job sequencing, two batch selection, and two job placement alternatives, are investigated. The effectiveness of the model and heuristics is analyzed through a comprehensive experimental study. The results show that the LPTBFSA heuristic outperforms the others, in which jobs are sorted in decreasing processing time, a batch is selected for each job based on the best-fit algorithm, and a job is placed in the selected batch following the "as compact as possible" packing principle. The LPTFFSA heuristic also works well, in which the first-fit algorithm is used to select a batch for each job.

Abstract:A new scheduling model in which both two-agent and a batch processing machine with non-identical job sizes exist is considered in this paper. Two agents compete to process their respective job sets on a common single batch processing machine. The objectives of the two agents are both to minimize the makespan. It is proved in the literature[7] that the complexity of minimizing makespan of one agent on a single batch processing machine with non-identical job sizes is NP-hard in the strong sense. We developed an improved ant colony optimal algorithm to search for the Pareto optimal solutions. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm could get better non-dominated solutions compared with the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) which was widely used in solving the multi-objective optimization problem.

Abstract:Batch processing machine scheduling in uncertain environment attracts more and more attention in the last decade. This paper deals with semi-online scheduling on two parallel batch processing machines with non-decreasing processing time of job. Jobs arrive over time in the online paradigm, and the processing time of any batch is equal to the length of the last arrival job in the batch. We study the unbounded model where each processing batch may contain an unlimited number of jobs, and the objective is to minimize the makespan. Given any job Jj together with its following job Jj+1, it is assumed that their processing times satisfy pj+1 ≥ αpj where α ≥ 1 is a constant. That is, jobs arrive in a non-decreasing order of processing times. We mainly propose an optimal ϕ-competitive online algorithm where ϕ ≥ 1 is a solution of equation ϕ3 + (α-1)ϕ2 + (α2 - α - 1)ϕ - α2 = 0.

Abstract:Scheduling a batch processing system has been extensively studied in the last decade. A batch processing system is modelled as a machine that can process up to b jobs simultaneously as a batch. The scheduling problem involves assigning all n jobs to batches and determining the batch sequence in such a way that certain objective function of job completion times C j is minimized. In this paper, we address the scheduling problem under the on-line setting in the sense that we construct our schedule irrevocably as time proceeds and do not know of the existence of any job that may arrive later. Our objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time ∑ w j C j . We provide a linear time on-line algorithm for the unrestrictive model (i.e., b ≥ n ) and show that the algorithm is 10/3-competitive. For the restrictive model (i.e., b < n ), we first consider the (off-line) problem of finding a maximum independent vertex set in an interval graph with cost constraint (MISCP), which is NP-hard. We give a dual fully polynomial time approximation scheme for MISCP, which leads us to a (4 + ∈)-competitive on-line algorithm for any ∈ > 0 for the original on-line scheduling problem. These two on-line algorithms are the first deterministic algorithms of constant performance guarantees.

Abstract:We study the scheduling of jobs on a single parallel-batching machine with non-identical job sizes and incompatible job families. Jobs from the same family have the same processing time and can be loaded into a batch, as long as the batch size respects the machine capacity. The objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time; this common scheduling objective is equivalent with the minimization of in-process inventory when all jobs have the same release date. Our problem combines two classic combinatorial problems, namely bin packing and single machine scheduling. We develop three new mixed-integer linear-programming formulations, namely an assignment-based formulation, a time-indexed formulation (TIF), and a set-partitioning formulation (SPF). We also propose a column generation (CG) algorithm for the SPF, a branch-and-price (B&P) algorithm and a CG-based heuristic. A heuristic framework based on proximity search is also developed using the TIF. We examine how to reduce the size (number of variables) of the formulations in a preprocessing step. The SPF and B&P can solve instances with non-unit and unit job durations to optimality with up to 80 and 150 jobs within reasonable runtime limits, respectively. The proposed heuristics perform better than the methods available in the literature for the same problem.
