Methods The preparation methods of bioceramic coatings are introduced, and the research work of bioinert coating and bioactive coating are emphatically summarized. Results Bioceramic coatings meets rapid developments in these decades, some new methods and new materials are emerging. Abstract:A review of progress in hydroxyapatite (HA) bioceramic materials is presented in this paper. The functional performance of HA can be optimized through tailoring its morphology. Porous HA ceramics prepared by various methods have strong abilities to in-tensify the osteoconduction and osteoinduction,and to improve the strength and toughness. HA composite materials can counteract the weaknesses of mechanical property of pure HA. The research trend of HA is discussed in terms of bionics. It is shown that synthe-sizing bionic bone materials with fine structure similar to natural bone can maximize the mechanical compatibility and biocompatibility between HA bioceramic materials and organisms.

Abstract:Bioceramics,because of their advantages of biocompatibility,osteoconduction,and biological affinity,it has become a potential useful material for biological scleroses tissues in terms of orthopedics,plastic surgery,dental surgery,oral surgery,cardiovascular surgery,ophthalmic surgery,otorhinolaryngology and general surgery.In this article,we introduce the classification,biological feature and practical applications of bioceramics on medicine,and prospect the development of bioceramics in the coming 10 years.According to the action mechanism of the materials with tissues,bioceramics can be divided into active bioceramics and inactive bioceramics.Active bioceramics mainly recommend hydroxyapatite ceramic.Its applications in hard tissue engineering,including blending lecithin or growing factors or cells to improve biological activity are reviewed.Moreover the characteristics and applications of bioactive glass and tricalcium phosphate are illustrated.On inactive bioceramics the biological characteristics and advantages of aluminum oxide ceramics and zirconium oxide ceramics are introduced.

Abstract:In the recent decades,bio-ceramic has made a significant progress in bone reconstruction,dental repair and other medical fields,but the traditional manufacturing process can not solve people's individual needs,therefore, 3D printing technology begins to be widely used in the production of bio-ceramic materials.This paper summarizes the research progress of bio-ceramic 3D printing technology.Firstly,it describes the classification and characteristics of bio-ceramic,compares the advantages of 3D printing technology with traditional processing technology,and then reviews some research of domestic and foreign experts in molding materials,performance optimization and bone modeling and molding technology.Finally,the application and development prospects are concluded.

Abstract:With the progresses in medical research, reconstruction of body's deformation because of tumor or injury has been drawn more and more attentions. As autograft was limited by in short supply and dissatisfied performance, material scientists and medical researchers worked hard together and laid emphasis on manmade materials. Early studies were focused on absorbable materials. Since there was great discrepancy between absorption time and tissue repairing time, the studies on absorbable materials were blocked. From 1960's, more and more studies focused on bioceramics because of its excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties. But the brittleness of bioceramics limited it for clinical use. In recent time, the strengthened ceramics and nano-bioceramics have been paid more attention and made great success. Scientists foretell that nano-technology would be the strategy of changing the brittleness of ceramics. The characters of nano-compound bioceramics were fit for the mechanical properties demand of man's hard tissue more. That infused new vigor into the research of bioceramics.

Abstract:: Porous bioceramic scaffolds, which possess attractive biocompatibility, ability to guide tissue regeneration and porous surface morphologies and channels beneficial to ingrowth of new born tissues, have seized increasing attentions and been widely applied in the field of hard tissue restoration. Whereas, the weak osteoinductive activity, monotonous biological function and poor mechanical property have restrained the therapeutic efficacy and wider application of bioceramic scaffolds. In view of this, we intended to introduce the existing modification methods of bioceramic scaffolds, including the surface modification with functional coating, construction of surface micro-/nano-structures, functional element doping and enhancement of mechanical property, along with the state of the research progresses in the improvement of biocompatibility, bone defect restoration, drug delivery, tumor therapy, and antibacterial capacity of multifunctional bioceramic scaffolds. In addition, potential research directions and applications of functionally modified bioceramic scaffolds are prospected to pro-vide references for the related exploration afterwards.

Abstract:In the modern days, the advancement in the biomedical research field focusing on the use of bioceramics for treatments of different diseases, vital organ functioning, and tissue engineering technology has given new hope in regenerative medicine. Various methodologies are explored for the synthesis of bioceramic materials using natural as well as synthetic. There are various challenges to make cost-effective material synthesis and to minimize the rejection of bioceramics in biological systems. To improve the acceptance and reduce the rejection by human beings and other living organisms by looking into their immune responses is one of the biggest challenges for any foreign material into the body system. To develop biocompatible ceramic material the mechanical and chemical properties of the ceramic materials are one of the important parameters for acceptance by human beings. The evaluation criteria for the mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of bioceramics using various existing approaches are playing very significant role to validate the use of bioceramics. The more cutting edge technologies for synthesis, evaluation of bioceramic properties can enhance the biomedical applications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To summarize and analyze of the research progress, direction and tendency of nano-bioceramic materials, and probe into the feasibility of applying nano-bioceramic materials in orthopedics, based on which to forward prospects in fabrication of artificial joints with nano-bioceramic materials. DATA SOURCES: A computer-based online search of articles about nano-bioceramic materials published between January 1998 and October 2006 was performed in Medline with the of "nano, bioceramic", and the language was limited to English. Meanwhile, China Journal Full-text Database (CJFD) was searched for relevant articles between January 1998 and October 2006 with the key words of "bioceramic", and the language was limited to Chinese. STUDY SELECTION: Data were checked in the first trial, and the inclusion criteria were: ① Literatures about the research, fabrication, application and prospect of bioceramics. ② Study on nano-bioceramic materials applied in orthopedics. DATA EXTRACTION: There were 61 literatures in accordance with the criteria, and 31 were selected; 30 repeated studies were excluded; 30 literatures met the inclusion criteria: 16 articles of which were about the application of bioceramic materials in orthopedics, 8 literatures related to the fabrication of bioceramic powder, and 6 reviews were about the prospect of bioceramic materials application. DATA SYNTHESIS: Bioceramic materials could be divided into inert bioceramic, active bioceramic and absorbable bioceramic according its bioactivity. Hydroxyapatite is a kind of ideal bioceramic, which drawn great attention from domestic and abroad scholars on its fabrication, biocompatibility and medical carrier. As an inorganic biomaterial, bioceramics were more and more important in people's eyes due to its excellent biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. CONCLUSION: Large-scale application of bioceramic in clinic is difficult due to its limited obdurability. With the development of nano-technology and nano-materials, the intensity, toughness, rigidity and bioactivity are greatly improved and nano-bioceramic materials will contribute to the molding of healthy body for human.

Abstract:The question of what qualities excellent medical bioceramics must possess to ensure satisfactory prognosis for bone healing and reconstruction remains a topic of great interest in both clinical and biomaterial sciences.Our team has been dedicated to researching medical bioceramics since the 1990s,involving basic scientific research,applied translational research,and clinical trials.Consequently,we have amassed a wealth of research and implementation experience.In this article,we aim to explore the subject of"Functional Bioadaptability in Medical Bioceramics",specifically focusing on calcium phosphate-based materials.We summarized how to effectively combine bioadaptability with design and manufacturing of medical bioceramics in the background of orthopedic clinical application,with the following aspects of structural adaptability,degradative adaptability,mechanical adaptability,and application adaptability.Hopefully,some suggestions put forward can ultimately provide valuable insights and recommendations for the design,production,supervision,and application of the upcoming medical bioceramics.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite is one of the best bioceramics with the excellent biocompatibility and bioactivity,but its mechanical properties of low strength and poor toughness limit its wide applications.Medical titanium and its alloys have good mechanical properties,but the wear resistance is poor.Medical titanium and its alloys belong to biological inert materials,and it interlocks mechanically with bones.Fabrication of hydroxyapatite bioceramic coatings on medical titanium is a domestic and foreign hot research topic at present,which has the important theoretical and practical significance.This paper reviews the research status and progress of the synthetic methods of the hydroxyapatite coating on medical titanium,and makes a prospect of the development of the technology and theory.

Abstract:Hydroxyapatite(HA)coating is considered as a good type of biomedical material for replacing hard tissues of human body due to its excellent biocompatibility and osteoinduction,but its higher solubility decreases the long-term performance of implants.Fluorine can be incorporated into HA crystal structure by substituting OH-groups with F-ions to form fluoridated hydroxyapatite(FHA),FHA possesses lower solubility and higher structure stability than pure HA while maintaining the comparable bioactivity and biocompatibility.The addition of Si in HA leads to an improvement of the bioactivity and enhancement of bone growth.Thus fluoridated hydroxyapatite(FHA)and Si-substituted hydroxyapatite(Si-HA)become the developing modified materials.In the present work,the performance characteristics and fabricating technologies of HA,FHA and Si-HA are introduced,and the research status of preparing bioceramic coating by laser cladding are expound emphatically.In the end,some significantly promising tendency about the research on bioceramic coating is presented based on the analysis of the deficiency of the current research.

Abstract:As two promising biomaterials for bone implants, biomedical metals have favorable mechanical properties and good machinability but lack of bioactivity; while bioceramics are known for good biocompatibility or even bioactivity but limited by their high brittleness. Biocermets, a kind of composites composing of bioceramics and biomedical metals, have been developed as an effective solution by combining their complementary advantages. This paper focused on the recently studied biocermets for bone implant applications. Concretely, biocermets were divided into ceramic-based biocermets and metal-based biocermets according to the phase percentages. Their characteristics were systematically summarized, and the fabrication methods for biocermets were reviewed and compared. Emphases were put on the interactions between bioceramics and biomedical metals, as well as the performance improvement mechanisms. More importantly, the main methods for the interfacial reinforcing were summarized, and the corresponding interfacial reinforcing mechanisms were discussed. In addition, the in vitro and in vivo biological performances of biocermets were also reviewed. Finally, future research directions were proposed on the advancement in component design, interfacial reinforcing and forming mechanisms for the fabrication of high-performance biocermets.

Abstract:Ultrafine powders of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and zirconia (ZrO2) containing 3mol% Y2O3 were prepared by chemical co-precipitate method. Based on them, HAP-ZrO2 binary composite and HAP-ZrO2-BG triple composite were sintered by inter-composite of different kinds of materials. The composition and microstructure of these materials were revealed by means of testing methods of XRD, FTIR, TEM, SEM, etc. The study showed bioceramic composite had good mechanical properties, chemical stability, and biocompatibility. The composites were new bioceramic composite materials with good prospects.

Abstract:Bioceramics, with excellent bioactivity and biocompatibility, have been widely used in dentistry, particularly in endodontics. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is the most widely used bioceramic in endodontics. Recently, many new bioceramics have been developed, showing good potential for the treatment of endodontic diseases. This paper reviews the characteristics of bioceramics and their applications in various clinical endodontic situations, including root-end filling, root canal therapy, vital pulp therapy, apexification/regenerative endodontic treatment, perforation repair, and root defect repair. Relevant literature published from 1993 to 2023 was searched by keywords in PubMed and Web of Science. Current evidence supports the predictable outcome of MTA in the treatment of endodontic diseases. Although novel bioceramics such as Biodentine, EndoSequence, and calcium-enriched mixtures have shown promising clinical outcomes, more well-controlled clinical trials are still needed to provide high-level evidence for their application in endodontics. In addition, to better tackle the clinical challenges in endodontics, efforts are needed to improve the bioactivity of bioceramics, particularly to enhance their antimicrobial activity and mechanical properties and reduce their setting time and solubility.

Abstract:Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic is an important bone grafting material in orthopedic field. BCP bioceramic is developed by an optimum balance of the stable phase of hydroxyapatite and the soluble β-tricalcium phosphate with the adjustable bioactivity and biodegradation. The researching history, preparation process and material evaluation are reviewed. Porous BCP ceramic simulated as the structure of nature bone is an excellent scaffold materials of bone tissue engineering, which is suitable for the growth of cells and bone tissue. The porous structure, mechanical properties and biological behavior of the porous BCP ceramic were concluded. The potential research of BCP bioceramic as scaffold materials for tissue engineering and carrier for various growth factors are described. Moreover the prospect of the tissue-engineered BCP ceramic scaffold is put forward.

Abstract:Bioactive ceramics have received great attention in the past decades owing to their success in stimulating cell proliferation, differentiation and bone tissue regeneration. They can react and form chemical bonds with cells and tissues in human body. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the application of bioactive ceramics for bone repair and regeneration. The review systematically summarizes the types and characters of bioactive ceramics, the fabrication methods for nanostructure and hierarchically porous structure, typical toughness methods for ceramic scaffold and corresponding mechanisms such as fiber toughness, whisker toughness and particle toughness. Moreover, greater insights into the mechanisms of interaction between ceramics and cells are provided, as well as the development of ceramic-based composite materials. The development and challenges of bioactive ceramics are also discussed from the perspective of bone repair and regeneration.
