Abstract:Studies on some superheavy nuclei are performed. The α decay energies are calculated by an improved local binding energy formula, and the α decay half-lives are calculated by the Viola-Seaborg formula. Good agreements between theoretical and experimental results are reached.

Abstract:Combined with the new table of atomic mass evaluation (AME) 2011, the binding energies and alpha-decay energies for heavy and superheavy nuclei are investigated based on the previous studies. First, we use the new data from the AME2011 to check the reliability of the previously proposed formulas. It is found that there is good agreement between the calculated results and new experimental data, showing the good predictive power of the formulas. Then, a new formula with fewer adjustable parameters is presented for binding energies, and it shows better agreement with the available experimental data. However, it is still hard to use it to accurately calculate the alpha-decay energies of superheavy nuclei with N >= 160 and Z >= 106. A new formula of alpha-decay energies is proposed as well, where the shell corrections are better described and the Z = 108 proton shell effect is added. The experimental Q alpha values are reproduced with improved accuracy especially for heavier nuclei. This improvement is of great importance for precise predictions of alpha-decay half-lives for unknown superheavy nuclei. Moreover, the new Q alpha formula and the theoretical FRDM95 and KTUY05 masses are used to determine the Q alpha values of superheavy nuclei with Z = 108-120, and their alpha-decay half-lives are calculated using the generalized density-dependent cluster model (GDDCM). The agreement between theoretical results and known experimental data is discussed, together with the deformed shell effects in the superheavy mass region. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Competition Between Α Decay and Spontaneous Fission for Heavy and Superheavy Nuclei

Abstract:We systematically investigate the alpha-decay and spontaneous fission half-lives for heavy and superheavy nuclei with proton number Z >= 90. The alpha-decay half-lives are obtained by the deformed version of the density-dependent cluster model (DDCM). In the DDCM, the microscopic potential between the alpha particle and the daughter nucleus is evaluated numerically from the double-folding model with the M3Y interaction. The influence of the core deformation on the double-folding potential is also properly taken into account by the multipole expansion method. The spontaneous fission half-lives of nuclei from Th-232 to (286)114 are calculated with the parabolic potential approximation by taking nuclear structure effects into account. The agreement between theoretical results and the newly observed data is satisfactory for both alpha emitters and spontaneous fission nuclei. The competition between alpha decay and spontaneous fission is analyzed in detail and the branching ratios of these two decay modes are predicted for the unknown cases.

Abstract:The synthesis of superheavy elements is now a hot topic in nuclear physics. Alpha-decay and spontaneous fission are two main decay modes in heavy and superheavy regions. Theoretical studies on alpha radioactivity and spontaneous fission can provide useful information for experiments. We investigate the alpha-decay and spontaneous fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei with different models. This includes the alpha-decay energies, alpha decay half-lives, and half-lives of spontaneous fission. The theoretical alpha-decay half-lives are in good agreement with experimental ones. The calculated half-lives of spontaneous fission are in reasonable agreement with present data. The properties of unknown nuclei are predicted.

Abstract:The structures of some superheavy nuclei are investigated using self-consistent relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The calculated binding energies and alpha-decay energies are in good agreement with experimental data. The theoretical lifetime reasonably agrees with the data. The properties of some unknown superheavy nuclei are predicted. A discussion on the deformed shell around Z=108 is made.

Abstract:The alpha-decay lifetimes of the newly synthesized superheavy elements are calculated using the alpha-cluster model and the results are in good agreement with experimental data. This indicates the reliability of the alpha-cluster model. The theoretical lifetimes based on the Hartree-Fock nuclear mass table are also calculated, which are useful for further theoretical and experimental researches on superheavy nuclei. We have also analyzed the alpha-decay energies, the separation energies of the last two neutrons and the separation energies of the last two protons of the superheavy nuclei. The shell effect at Z = 114 and N = 184 is discussed.

Abstract:The a-decay half-lives of superheavy nuclei around the N = 152 shell gap have been systematically investigated using theoretical Q values. These theoretical Q values are extracted from the local formula of binding energies for heavy and superheavy nuclei. Exact calculations are performed in two ways: The unified formula of half-lives for a decay and cluster radioactivity, and the generalized density-dependent cluster model. It is found that the available experimental a-decay half-lives are well reproduced in this two ways. Based on this fact, some useful predictions of a-decay half-lives are made for still unknown superheavy nuclei, which may guide future experiments.
Improved Version of a Binding Energy Formula for Heavy and Superheavy Nuclei Withz⩾90andn⩾140

Abstract:A local formula of binding energy for heavy and superheavy nuclei has very recently been proposed [Dong and Ren, Phys. Rev. C 72, 064331 (2005)]. In this paper, the limit of the predictive ability of this local formula is investigated. It is found that the neutron-proton correlations should be considered when higher precision is required. On the one hand, we introduce a new term vertical bar N-Z-50 vertical bar/A, and on the other hand we consider the different strengths of proton-proton, neutron-neutron, and neutron-proton pairing correlations. For the first time, the standard deviation root sigma(2) of the binding energies for 117 nuclei with Z >= 90 and N >= 140 is reduced to 0.105 MeV. The alpha decay energies Q(alpha) and half-lives T-alpha of nuclei with Z = 102-118 are reproduced quite well. The proton drip line of superheavy elements from Md (Z = 101) to Ds (Z = 110) are predicted.

Abstract:Recently, experimental researches on the α decay with long lifetime are one of hot topics in the contemporary nuclear physics [e.g. N. Kinoshita et al. (2012) [2] and J.W. Beeman et al. (2012) [4]]. In this study, we have systematically investigated the extremely long-lived α-decaying nuclei within a generalized density-dependent cluster model involving the experimental nuclear charge radii. In detail, the important density distribution of daughter nuclei is deduced from the corresponding experimental charge radii, leading to an improved α-core potential in the quantum tunneling calculation of α-decay width. Besides the excellent agreement between theory and experiment, predictions on half-lives of possible candidates for natural α emitters are made for future experimental detections. In addition, the recently confirmed α-decay chain from 294117 is well described, including the attractive long-lived α-decaying 270Db, i.e., a positive step towards the “island of stability” in the superheavy mass region.

Abstract:Systematic calculations on the alpha-decay half-lives of heavy and superheavy nuclei are performed within a deformed version of the cluster model, using the modified two-potential approach. The deformed Woods-Saxon potential is employed to calculate the alpha-decay width through a deformed barrier. For comparison the calculated alpha-decay half-lives in the empirical relations are also presented. The present study is initially restricted to even-even nuclei in the heavymass region with N > 126. Then the study is extended to the recentlyobserved heaviest nuclei, including synthesized superheavy elements and isotopes. The alpha-decay half-lives obtained are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Superheavy elements have provided a good test of the validity of both nuclear structure models and nuclear decay models in a large mass region. We firstly review the recent progress on theoretical studies of superheavy nuclei. Emphasis is placed on the structure and decay of superheavy nuclei. Then theoretical results of odd-odd nuclei with Z = 109 - 115 are presented and discussed. It is clearly demonstrated that there is shape coexistence for the ground state of many superheavy nuclei from different models and many superheavy nuclei are deformed. In some cases superdeformation can become the ground state of superheavy nuclei and it is important for future studies of superheavy nuclei. This can lead to the existence of low-energy isomers in the superheavy region and it plays an important role for the stability of superheavy nuclei. As α-decay and spontaneous fission plays a crucial role for identifications of new elements, we also review some typical models of α-decay half-lives and spontaneous fissions half-lives. Some new views on superheavy nuclei are presented.

Abstract:The radius of a nucleus is one of the important quantities in nuclear physics. Although there are many researches on ground-state properties of superheavy nuclei, researches on charge radii of superheavy nuclei are rare. In this article, nuclear root-mean-square (rms) charge radii of heavy and superheavy nuclei are extracted from the experimental alpha-decay data. alpha-decay calculations are performed within the generalized density-dependent cluster model, where alpha-decay half-lives are evaluated using quasibound state wave functions. The charge distribution of daughter nuclei is determined in the double-folding model to reproduce the experimental alpha-decay half-lives. The rms charge radius is then calculated using the resulting charge distribution. In addition, a simple formula is also proposed to calculate nuclear charge radii with the experimental alpha-decay energies and half-lives. The formula is directly derived from the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin barrier penetration probability with some approximations. The two different methods show good agreement with the experimental data for even-even nuclei, and the deduced results are consistent with other theoretical models. Moreover, nuclear radii of heavy and superheavy nuclei with Z = 98-116 are extracted from the alpha-decay data, for which alpha decay is a unique tool to probe nuclear sizes at present. Improved evaluation of nuclear charge radii for superheavy nuclei

Abstract:Although significant progress has been made in the synthesis of superheavy nuclei, the experimental knowledge of them is still very limited while the alpha decay chain is the main tool used to identify newly produced superheavy nuclei. Previously, we have extracted nuclear charge radii of superheavy nuclei via the experimental alpha decay data. As a further step, the density dependent cluster model is improved by introducing the difference between the density distributions of protons and neutrons. Besides, the important quantity, i.e., the alpha preformation factor, is connected with the microscopic correction of nuclear mass during this procedure, to perform a more reasonable description of the alpha decay process. It is found that the present deduced nuclear charge radii of heavy nuclei are in a better agreement with the measured values as compared to those in our previous evaluations. Subsequently, the nuclear radii of heavier even-even isotopes with Z = 98-116 are probed, accompanied by the consistency with the empirical evaluations. Moreover, the effect of the depressed density at the center of superheavy nucleus on the final extracted nuclear radius plus the decay lifetime is discussed, which appears to be different from the case of lighter nuclide.

Abstract:The α-decay half-lives of heavy and superheavy nuclei are systematically calculated using a radial wave function within the cluster model. The decaying state is considered as an isolated quasi-bound state, and the α-decay process is interpreted as the quantum transition from the quasi-bound state to the scattering state. Then the quasi-bound state wave function and the scattering state wave function, in combination with the difference of potentials, are used to give a clear expression of the α-decay width. The present study is mainly restricted to even–even nuclei with N>126, including the superheavy mass region. The obtained α-decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the study has been extended to the newly observed heaviest nuclei. It is worth noting that the aim of this work is not only to reproduce the experimental data better, but also to extend our understanding of α decay.

Abstract:We investigate the ground state properties of some superheavy nuclei, which may be synthesized in future experiments. Special emphases are placed on the alpha decay energies and half-lives. The alpha decay energies and half-lives from different theoretical models are compared and discussed comprehensively. Through these calculations and comparisons, the optimal superheavy elements to be synthesized in future experiments are proposed theoretically.

Abstract:The Viola-Seaborg formula is a well-known formula for α-decay half-lives of heavy nuclei. In this work we obtain new parameters of this formula through a least-square fit to even-even nuclei between Z = 84 and Z = 110 with N greater than 126. On average, the formula can reproduce the half-lives of heavy even-even nuclei within a factor of 1.3. The formula with new parameters works well for the superheavy region which is a hot topic of nuclear physics. The numerical results from the formula are compared with those from the cluster model.

Abstract:As for the dominant decay channel of superheavy nuclei, we have reshaped the crucial nuclear potential in the alpha-decay process through the systematical analysis of available experimental decay data. Specifically, a Fermitype renormalization factor brings us an effective alpha-daughter potential so that we can obtain the decay energy and half-life on the same footing, which exactly corresponds to the stability of nuclei. During this procedure, the alpha preformation factor is related with the recalculated pairing and shell corrections. Besides the excellent agreement between theory and experiment for both the decay energy and the half-life, we extend the study to available short-lived nuclei in the superheavy-mass region as a predictive set. It is found that the present alpha-core potential can figure out the decay scheme of these superheavy alpha emitters very well. Encouraged by this, it is expected that the following predictions on the heaviest nuclei can be valuable for discussing their robustness and shed some light on the "island of stability" plus the fundamental mass of unknown nuclides from a novel perspective.

Abstract:The spontaneous fission half-lives of heavy and superheavy nuclei from Th-232 to (286)114 are calculated within the parabolic potential approximation by taking nuclear structure effects into account [Phys. Rev. C 78, 044329 (2008)]. The agreement between theoretical results and the newly observed data is very good in our calculations. The average deviation between data and theory is within a factor of 10 for total 45 spontaneous fission nuclei. This level of agreement is very satisfactory because the spontaneous fission is much more complex than other decay modes such as light cluster radioactivities.

Abstract:In this work, the $\beta$-stable region for Z $\geq$ 90 is proposed. The calculated $\beta$-stable nuclei in the $\beta$-stable region are in good agreement with the ones obtained by M\"{o}ller \emph{et al}.. The half-lives of the nuclei close to the $\beta$-stable region are calculated and the competition between $\alpha$-decay and $\beta$-decay is systematically investigated. The calculated half-lives and the suggested decay modes are well in line with the experimental results. The predictions for half-lives and decay modes of the nuclei with Z = 107$-$110 are presented.

Abstract:We investigate the recently discovered $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ decays of heavy and superheavy nuclei with $A=160--294$ by the cluster model of $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ decay. This covers the short-lifetime $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ decays of the nuclei near the proton-drip line, the decays of superheavy elements with $Z=106--118$, and the long-lifetime decay of the naturally occurring nuclide $^{180}\\mathrm{W}$ [Danevich et al., Phys. Rev. C 67, 014310 (2003)]. It is found that the cluster model can well reproduce the new data of half-lives of these nuclei. For superheavy nuclei the cluster model, without introducing any additional adjustments, can reasonably reproduce the half-lives of many nuclei although substantial deviations between experimental half-lives and theoretical ones exist in a few cases in which there may be large errors in the experimental data for a single event. Some new $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ emitters in naturally occurring nuclides are predicted. Experiments to search the $\\ensuremath{\\alpha}$ radioactivity of $^{176,178}\\mathrm{Hf}$ and of $^{149}\\mathrm{Sm}$ are strongly recommended.
