Observation of Posture Patterns and Behavioural Activites of Sows

Abstract:Posture patterns and behavioural activities were observed in farrowing crate and pen. In test group 1, the multiparous Yorkshire were choosen, and ten mutiparous Yorkshire and Landrace were choose to observed in test 2. Adopting twinkling record method, the sows were observed 3 times a week, that means every two days. At every observing day, the sows were observed two time, each in the morning and each in the afternoon. Every observation used 3 h, once every 5 min. From observation, we fund the sows' main orientation preference in farrowing pen is laying toword the outside (north), the second choice is toward inside (south), towards right or left is less or no obvious, the difference is no obvious before and after farrowing. In forrowing orate (wells around), the orientation preference of lying is toward outside, toward inside is less. The difference is not obvious to lay toward right or left. Yordshire likes to choose outside more than Landrace, they choose more toward outside during their gestation period than breast-feeding period.
