Abstract:The initial evolution process of laser-induced plasma and related shock wave in air during laser ablation process has been studied experimentally with a welldesigned optical fiber sensor based on detecting beam deflection. The experimental results indicate that: within 0.4 mm,the shock wave, which does not separate from the plasma, departs from the target with high speed together with the laser-induced plasma;at 0.4 mm,the plasma lamina occurs secondary ionization. The ionization induces the plasma expanding all around, and also leads to low density at plasma center and high density around. In addition, the shock wave detaches from the plasma simultaneously.Between 0.4 and 0.7 mm,the transition from low density to low density at center and high density around is observed due to diffuseness. With the increasing of the distance, the plasma was slowed down and signal waveform was broadened. At the same time, the amplitude decreases till fading away.Furthermore, the shock wave, separated from the plasma, attenuates quickly to the local sound speed as an acoustic wave at 8mm.
