Abstract:The difficulties in the construction of Pingtan strait hi-rail bridge come from its large scale, long life cycle, diverse ocean environment with deep water, strong wind, exposed granite and heavy sea water corrosion. In view of the different geological conditions and water depth, detailed classification of trestle bridge is employed and researches and analyses are conducted to define design parameters so as to provide references for the design of the substructure of such trestle bridges in similar water areas.

Abstract:Taken as the research subject a double-struts Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) used as an inland ferry, our present work developed a new design with a new bow shape and a change in the position of the strut. Using CFD software——Shipflow, a series of calculations and comparisons in wave-making resistances of the hull, the strut and the SWATH were made between the old design and new one. The effect of the bow shape and the position of the strut on the wave-making resistance were summarized, upon which an improved design of the ship was proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of folding wing is designed to facilitate the aerial deployment of underwater vehicles. The folding wing expands under the action of the torsion spring when the underwater vehicle enters the water. The geometric model of the folding wing is established, and then the expanding time of the folding wing is analyzed using MATLAB. The bidirectional fluid-structure coupling CFD simulation is performed on a part of the folding wing to obtain the lift and drag at different angles of attack. An expanding experiment of a structural unit was carried out to verify the performance of the folding wing.

Abstract:The practical design technique of SWATH ships developed by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation is described.This includes the systematic approaches of conceptual design,optimization of shipform and principal dimensions,predictions of powering performance,seakeeping behavior and motion stability,assessment of structural loads,static and dynamic strengths of a SWATH ship traveling in random waves.The design and evaluation of an ocean-survey SWATH ship with the displacement of 1 500t is illustrated as an example.In the design process,the linear and non-linear three-dimensional hydroelasticity theories were employed to predict the loads and to assess the structuralsafety of the vessel traveling in rough seas.The resistance,seakeeping and maneuvering behaviors and the wave loads of the designed vessel were verified by a set of restricted and free-running model tests carried out in towing tank and wave basin at CSSRC.These are briefly described in this paper.

Abstract:A small-waterplane-area-twin-hull (SWATH) vehicle with inclined struts was investigated by numerical and experimental methods. Seakeeping performance was studied firstly based on the STF (Salvesen, N., Tuck, E. O. and Faltinsen, O. M. (1970). Ship motions and sea loads. Transactions–Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. No. 78:250–287) strip theory. Results show that the inclined struts demonstrates improved seakeeping performances by comparison with a vertical-strut SWATH and an NPL (National Physical Laboratory) catamaran. 3D numerical simulations adopting an RANS method and model tests in the towing tank were carried out both in calm water and in regular waves. Numerical simulations have been validated by comparison with laborotary tests. As negative added resistance has been observed both in the model tests and in the numerical simulations, it can be concluded that the inclined struts, which could make use of wave energy, can give rise to a reduction of power required in waves.

Abstract:The form-changeable unmanned surface vehicle (USV) have a high research enthusiasm due to its far-ranging applicability, strong combat capability and low operating cost. This paper constructs a variable-structure Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) USV with twin hydrofoils, and aims at assessing its longitudinal motion stability (LMS) in the catamaran-form state (CFS) by parametric model and CFD method. The parametric representation of the torpedo, double struts and hydrofoils was conducted by uniform B-spline curves, 3-D coordinates conversion and surface generation method. The CFD code was verified, and used to calculate the LMS of the vessel with different strut configurations, form-states and CG position. Based on numerical results, the causes of different instability behaviors were expounded. Further, the LMS of the models with and without hydrofoils was compared at Fr = 0.1–0.8, the adjustment method of fore and aft hydrofoils to sailing attitudes was explained, the rational allocation of attack angles was also offered. The results show that the slender double struts arranged at both ends of torpedo is more conducive to the LMS and resistance, the vessel should sail in the CFS of γs ≤ 10° at Fr > 0.6; the hydrofoils slightly weakens the LMS at low Fr, makes the bow appear slight updip at Fr = 0.4–0.6, but still can sails stably; adjusting attack angles can inhibit the instability, and the most effective allocation of the fore and aft hydrofoil's attack angles is linearly arranged at Fr = 0.7, 0.8, also the adjusting can reduce the upward trim at Fr = 0.9, 1.0, but the hull is lifted higher and arises the bow updip due to the free surface suction force, at this time, the attack angle's graduation should be refined to realize the finer adjustment to the dynamic trim.

Abstract:The wave-making resistance of SWATH ship was calculated and analyzed by SHIPFLOW using a basic computational SWATH model with different factors,including the draft,the ratio of length and diameter of the submerged body,distance between the two submerged hulls,length of the struts and longitudinal position of struts.Based on the simulation results,rules that wave-making resistance changes with ship types are analyzed.Combined with other factors,a feasible method is offered for the further research in SWATH ships.

Abstract:An unconventional small-waterplane-area-twin-hull(SWATH)ship was designed,whose twin hulls were slightly curved in an S-shape and arranged at a mean yaw angle but mirror symmetric to their common longitudinal center plane.Based on the zero wave resistancetheory,a viscous flow theory which could solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS)equations was used to study the resistance performance of the unconventional SWATH ship in calm water.In comparison with a benchmark conventional SWATH ship,which features a typical torpedo-shaped body,the simulation results prove the effectiveness of the S-shaped design.The unconventional SWATH ship has much less low-speed drag than its conventional SWATH counterpart and comparable total drag at high speeds.

Abstract:The analyses the structural response of a small waterplane area twin hull ship(SWATH)in the paper,there structure optimized analysis is done in the end,which aimed to improve total performance;decrease structure mass and center of gravity weight.In this research,according to the guidelines of SWATH ship by CCS,the loading of a SWATH ship is discussed,the FEM is used to calculate the structural response of the SWATH ship.In the end,there structural optimized by integrating multidisciplinary design optimization platform,the genetic algorithm is proposed in the paper for the two kinds of loading case.Numerical results show that the optimization method is effective and feasible;it can give the reference for the ship design.

Abstract:The research subject is a high speed shuttle vessel used as a coastal patrol boat. By using potential flow panel method in SHIPFLOW,which based on Dawson method,calculate and compare wavemaking resistances of the hull with different transom stern forms. Based on original ship with sharp stern,produce different transom forms by changing length and width,compare the influence on wave resistance and wave height of different groups,upon which a better design of the ship was proposed to provide reference for further optimization.

Abstract:As one of the main ways to obtain marine data, marine buoys have the advantages of low cost and little environmental restrictions. So far, a variety of buoys with different functions have been developed and buoy internal loading, power systems, mooring systems and hydrodynamic performances have become research hotspots, but few scholars pay close attention to buoy design. Therefore, this paper focuses on the design for pillar buoys to improve their stability in rolling. To obtain the geometric parameters, first the mathematical models is established for an ideal floating structure and then the rolling analysis of small waterplane area pillar buoy (SWAP) and novel small waterplane area pillar buoy (NSWAP) are performed. It shows that small waterplane area can help reduce the rolling angle. The prototype of NSWAP is built and its experiments in water flume are carried out at the wave height of 0.1 m, 0.2 m and 0.3 m. Taking the maximum rolling angle as an indicator, the analysis of experiments data proves that the experiment basically meets the design value and NWAP shows good rolling stability. This paper can be a guideline for further research in rolling analysis and floating structure design.

Abstract:Small water plane area twin-hull ship(SWATH) is a new type catamaran with better sea keeping performance.Its water plane is smaller,but its wet hull surface area is greater than that of the normal ship,which leads to great effect on the vibration of the hull.Vibration response of SWATH hull is analyzed based on the 3D hydroelasticity method.Mode shapes of the dry hull are adopted as the principle coordinate,and the wave's influence is considered.Then the main overall vibration shapes of SWATH are achieved.Meanwhile,the overall vibration test of the SWATH is performed.The contrast of the test results and calculation results shows good agreement in main overall vibration shapes and relevant natural frequency of the SWATH are accordant.It is indicated that the overall vibration test method and the numerical analysis method are reasonable.

Abstract:The form-changeable unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have garnered considerable research interest due to their wide-ranging applicability and robust combat capabilities. This paper specifically addresses the longitudinal motion stability of a variable-structure Small Waterplane Area Twin-hull Ship (SWATH) equipped with twin hydrofoils, aiming to evaluate the impact of hydrofoils on sailing attitudes. Initially, model tests were systematically conducted under different form-states, both with and without hydrofoils, in calm water conditions. Subsequently, verification and validation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed against the experimental results. Finally, strategies to mitigate bow-diving during high-speed tests were proposed based on the validated CFD simulations, focusing on adjusting hydrofoil attack angles. The test results indicate that with outwardly spreading struts, the bow tends to dip down more as speed increases. Model tests, combined with CFD simulations, serve as a reference for stable sailing at full speeds, presenting strategies for adjusting attack angles under varying form-states and speeds. Moreover, effective foil adjustment modes are identified to suppress bow-diving, considering thrust. Strategies for adjusting attack angles during the acceleration process are summarized, verifying the stability of the optimal 10° form-state at high speeds.

Abstract:The sailing performance of an S-type small waterplane area twin hull (S-SWATH) vehicle, which has comparable total resistance at low and high speeds, in waves is investigated. A flapping foil stabiliser is proposed to enhance the seakeeping advantages of the vehicle in rough waves. The unsteady hydrodynamic characteristics of the flapping foil stabiliser are investigated, and its working mechanism is modelled based on the data generated using the computational fluid dynamics method with fixed-grid technology. Compared with a conventional fin, the results show the benefits of the flapping foil with relatively higher lift coefficients and lower drag coefficients. The vertical plane motion control model coupled with the mathematical force model of flapping foils is built. A controller combining the model predictive control scheme with input disturbance measurement is designed to compare the performance of the conventional fins and flapping foils in stabilising the heave–pitch motions of the vehicle. For the simulations, the hydrodynamic coefficients of the vehicle and the wave force–moment on S-SWATH are updated based on Salvesen, Tuck and Faltinsen strip theory, which is equivalent to measuring the approaching wave elevation directly. The flapping foil stabilisers show significant improvements in damping the heave–pitch motions of the vehicle in rough seas.
Operability Analysis of SWATH As a Service Vessel for Offshore Wind Turbine in the Southeastern Coast of China

Abstract:The operability of service operation vessels (SOV) is highly concerned with the cost, schedule, and weather window to the operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms. SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) vessel is introduced as a novel application as SOV to be deployed off the coast of southeastern China, an investigation into the operability for walk-to-work (W2W) on-site service using the new type of vessel is conducted in this study. The features of SWATH’s motion behavior are discussed by performing a seakeeping analysis, which is compared to a similar size monohull SOV. W2W operation and various operational limits associated with vessel and gangway dynamic response are modeled by the numerical method established in the frequency domain. Considering different W2W transfer approaches and wave headings, an in-depth analysis regarding the limiting wave height is carried out, the operability of three sites off the southeastern coast of China is predicted. SWATH demonstrates the excellent operability for both transversal and longitudinal transfer approaches as well as the robustness against arbitrary wave heading. The fuel consumption under the high sea-state shows higher usage compared to the monohull by a qualitative estimation using the second-order mean drift forces. With the average operability greater than 95% in the study, SWATH has proven to be an attractive type of vessel against monohull whose operability may drop to 60% to 80% in case of unfavorable heading or transfer approach. Due to lack of damping, the optimization of SWATH geometry and proper damping device may help further improve the operability by suppressing resonant heave and roll.
Challenge in Design and Construction of Submerged Floating Tunnel and State-Of-Art

Abstract:Submerged Floating Tunnel (SFT) is a new type of transport structure. It is different from the general bridges and tunnels engineering, it has a significant advantage over conventional structures in crossing long, large and deep water areas. Hence, SFT has great potential for development of infrastructures in crossing straits. Aiming at features of SFT, this article discuses some challenges and problems, which are faced in design and construction of SFT, such as wave load determination, vortex-induced vibration, immigration and reduction of accidental load and situation, durability, innovational construction method, risk identification and control etc. The state-of-art and works done by Zhejiang University in the relative areas of SFT were introduced. The technological difficulties and corresponding solution were proposed. At last, the several key problems to be needed further research were proposed, so as to provide reference for the design, construction and project risk analysis of future SFT.

Abstract:The construction of sea-crossing channels has become an important part of the transportation infrastructure construction, and is developing in the direction of a larger span, deeper foundation and more complex system. Compared with traditional bridges, the sea-crossing bridges are facing the challenges of structural durability, wind resistance, complex environment and construction difficulties. In order to deal with the various challenges encountered in the design, construction and operation of the sea crossing channels, this paper puts forward the scheme combining immersed tunnel with submerged floating tunnel for crossing the Dongwuyang water area in Fujian Province, China after considering the topographic, geological and hydrological conditions. The cross section of SFT tube, arrangement of cables and the type of foundation were preliminary designed. The tube deformation, stress and cable force of the submerged floating tunnel under different load combinations were also analyzed by Midas/Civil. The global dynamic response analysis of the SFT structure under the wave and current load was carried out by ABAQUS. The static stress distribution of the SFT concrete tube was analyzed by the 3D finite element model. The results show that under the action of environment and service loads, the design indexes such as internal force, deformation and acceleration of the SFT tube meet the requirements of the design code, which indicates the SFT scheme is feasible, and it has good advantage for the deep-water construction environment.
Hydroelastic Analysis of SWATH Ship Wave Loads

Abstract:The existing 3D hydroelasticity theory provides a unified approach of fluid-structure in-teraction analysis for predicting both the rigid body motions and the structural distortions of a ship travelling in waves.This kind of method is especially useful and effective in the estimation of wave loads of multihull ships, for example a SWATH ship. In this paper, the 3D hydroelastic analysis method is employed together with the spectrum analysis procedure to predict the wave load spectra and the design loads of an 1 100t SWATH ship. The predicted design loads are compared with the model test results, the existing data in literature, and the results calculated with the three classifi-cation society rules.The comparisons illustrate the feasibility of the hydroelastic analysis method in design load assessment of SWATH ships.

Abstract:The structure and mechanical characteristics of Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) are usually more complicated than ordinary mono-hull ships, therefore there are more difficulties when doing structural optimization and design. When under transverse bending condition, the stress in many regions is very high. This paper utilizes adaptive simulated annealing algorithm to find better design variables. The approach obtained better results and validating the application in engineering practicability. This research provides reference when doing SWATH structural design or structural optimization.
